Jun Maeda's writing is definitely becoming formulaic at this point, at least it seems we aren't getting a bs Charlotte plot twist this time and
Angel Beats. Three episodes left, but at this rate I can't justify anything higher than a 7.

I hella agree with this. He's one of the more funny writers and usually I like his work for that, but for whatever reason when it comes to his anime original shows, it seems like he feels obligated to cram in some dramatic or sad shit near the end of them.

It might be that he's just not given enough time to properly pace the story? The longer Key series that were based off VNs he wrote, while still as melodramatic, didn't feel as rushed or as forced as his original shows do. Though you'd think he would learn on his third time around how to pace these shows with the number of episodes given lmao

Jun Maeda and Key just don't help themselves whatsoever, no matter if its the early 2000s or if its 2020. Everything they touch, turns to pure shit, and this episode and show just embodies what I dislike about his writing in particular. I get the audience and appeal for shows like these but he just pushes melodrama down people's throats in absurd fashions and plot twists to go about it; in rushed fashion too for the latest shows they've done.

I'm feeling the same as with Tenki no Ko/Weathering with you (which also had Hina LOL), I knew it wouldn't be as great as your name (and first 7 episodes of kamisama i was trying to force myself to believe in Maeda Jun) and here we have it, sure it's average, sure it's too fast but that confession scene still made me cry T^T It might not end up as a masterpiece but having P.A. Works and Yanagi Nagi is already good enough for me..

Overall great episode and I liked Suzuki shounen's backstory and whole reveal what Hina is, I think previous episode was a great build up for this one and I had no problems getting emotional.. Hina without her hat/hair accessory is so sweet, makes me wanna hug her and cry :'(

I still believe there will be more drama in next 3 episodes, Hina might get her computer removed and go back to her Logos state and eventually die :<

Idk how you people enjoyed comedy in first half of these series, I'd rather enjoy scifi cyber stuff and drama instead

Now the sad feeling part begins.

Although the plot went a little bit too fast imo and the confession came from nowhere, I still wish they could end up together.

Soooo imagine such a person would exist in our real world... I mean what would happen in that case? So from that point of view I can understand the authority people making this choice... But still we all wish for a happy ending for sure. Let's see if they are able to save her.

This episode felt very meh to me.
Knew the end of the world ment hers.

The confession would of been better if it was 'because we're family' rather than a love as there was no build up to it really.

Then bringing all this SiFi stuff, Feels like it might drop the show a bit in the score.

Somehow I just can't feel anything for these characters. They are so cliche and also cringy :(
I have no more hopes for this anime.
I can't feel bad for these annoying and super unreal characters. It's like they are acting or something like that. I know that its obviously acting xD

I hoped for a way better plot-twist.

I don't think this episode was handled very well. When the credits appeared I was apathetic.

I thought the serious plot was going to be handled seriously, but then they had goons try to disappear a person in front of like seven+ witnesses, and they didn't even bring weapons to subdue anyone. I really don't know what they expected.

And then Yota, knowing they were being chased, stopped in the middle of an open space to give Hina a reason why he was protecting her... Dude, save it for later, or explain it while running. You didn't have to wait for the evil dudes to get to you.

Speaking of Hina, she just turned into a robot not capable of human emotions mid-episode for some reason. This seems like a common trend in anime, asking "why are you saving me?" as if letting someone close to you die is the normal thing to do. Whatever this trope's name is, I hate it.

We also learned the hacker's backstory, but we just skimmed through it. I really couldn't care much about him.

Also, after seeing how my brother works as a programmer, the entire blue ocean thing was a little bit cringy. But it wasn't that bad.

I think the problem here is I expected too much from KEY. I'll keep watching, but I'm sad it had to go like this. I hope these last 3 episodes help some bit.

Agreed that characters are lackluster...

Yuta: Build more toward a comedy mc than a dynamic love interest
Hina: Annoying little sister rather than romantic love interest
Izanami: The only well built character for this story
Ashura: This best friend character got too little plot/ impact
Yuta sister: why are you here?
Ramen girl : why are you here?
Majang girl: why are you here?

Also that hacker suddenly turn 180 and care about Hina is so unnatural too.
And when hacker send info to Hina, she's like : "Oh ok, I'm going to die, right."
Suddenly turn into a robo emotionless girl when in all the early episodes she's this energetic/ exaggerated / loud/ annoying / overreacted character?

This episode is focused on Suzuki which is showing how he was abused by his parents to do those kind of things.

And most of all now that we got to know more about Hina, was she really a God? Or she's something else? I have a lot of questions, I'm looking forward to happening next.

I’m like Kino, I felt completely apathetic with the emotional parts. Jun Maeda has only impressed with the Clannad OVAs and Little Busters Refrain for me, personally. This time this feels way too formulaic, which doesn’t help when the comedy and story management really sucks for most part sans ep 5.
I don’t blame people here who absolutely hate Jun’s way of writing drama, but here’s the thing, regardless of whatever they think: the art of drama, along with romance and comedy, are hands down some of the most subjective genres ever in the realm of fiction, and not a single other genre comes close.
I myself am extremely disappointed, since it’s not like I didn’t see notable good parts, but wasted opportunities here and there and dabbling with one-off segments too much can drive the viewers crazy.

Even without the subjective viewpoints at hand with the art of writing drama, it’s clear that he’s settling for the default options, which really bothers me. It’s funny cause he said he could’ve used more episodes, yet kept piling too many ep-long segments early on that don’t really pertain to the main narrative at all. Jun’s fault, imo, is his usual lack of creativity, at least in this particular conundrum. The fictional Logos Syndrome had me really besides myself, and then this ep happened.

Well sooner or later we all knew something like this was gonna happen in this show, but I didn't really expect so much of it to happen so quickly and suddenly. Just last week it was still all fun and games and now so much is thrown at us at such quick pace that although I don't have any problems with the plot idea itself, it just doesn't really feel particularly impactful this way. Too rushed

Also the confession felt really out of place imo. There was barely even any romantic hints or tension between them in the whole show far

Today's episode is titled "The Day of the Deicide". I should have looked up what "deicide" was after watching it instead of beforehand...

We learn more about Suzuki this time. He had some seemingly nice parents before his childhood turned into nothing but abuse until his parents died, where his only reaction is nothing but maniacal laughter. In the words of the CEO, "how very sad." We also learn that he has some Code Geass powers or something (idk I haven't watched Code Geass lol), cuz the camera zooms into his eye and shows how he sees a whole bunch of code before the camera shows him diving into an ocean made up of code—a literal sea of information. I guess that explains the shots of Hina in the water and Suzuki lying on an ocean floor in the OP, as well as the ED having a goldfish swimming through a background full of sci-fi looking code stuff. And all the other related images throughout the show.

Looks like Hina's motif is a goldfish—I mean, she could literally be the goldfish in the ED lol. The connection that Suzuki and Hina had in this episode also explains that one key visual as well.

Speaking of "well that explains things", it seems that my theory of Hina having powers because of being an experiment of Professor Korogi was correct (shoutout to @EpicCh33se for their theories too!!). We learn in this episode that Hina's "powers" and omniscience comes from a chip that Professor Korogi implanted in her brain, which also temporarily "cured" her of Logos syndrome. It seems that Hina will indeed die though, as the CEO's agents or whatever have come to take her away.
Now, don't kill me here, but I found it really funny that Yota wasted his time that he should have been using to run away with Hina from the guards and decided to use it on confessing to Hina on love or something. Like yeah, it's super emotional and all or whatever the story is trying attempt here, but... I mean, you could have also done that while running away, right? Yota and Hina literally just keep standing there during their whole talk at the end or whatever until the guards catch up and push Yota away as they collect Hina. I know that Hina has accepted her fate, but Yota is not willing to accept it and should have actually DONE SOMETHING to actually prevent her fate like he keeps insisting or whatever. It seriously feels like there was no effort in trying to get away and that Yota practically just handed Hina over or whatever lol.

This is yet another episode in a row that could have been great if it was executed differently. As it is now, I don't really feel much other than "ok" lol. Suzuki's development in the first half of the episode is honestly the highlight here and not the sad ending. Sorry.

Also the ED theme is different. Nice song.

I love that the song Hina wrote on piano got some beautiful lyrics and a title! I did a quick translate and the title of the song is "Summer Calm". It was in the credits so I'm pretty sure that was the song so i could be wrong but I'm 99% sure. This episode was great but I think that Izanami's episode was still my favorite but this is definitely a close second. It was another emotional and enjoyable episode. Only three days left.

I didn't even realize that was Hina's piano song for today's ED, nice call if that indeed was it.

See, without proper build up and tone management, the transition from light comedy into serious plot is extremely jarring, as if we're watching two different anime.

This has to be the worst episode this serie has to offer because of how they handle the previous episodes. It feels out of place , forced, and cheap.

The genius guy's past story is thrown in so quickly too without proper buildup.
It's hard to care about his backstory/ suffering because the anime never gave us a reason to in the first place.

The "end of world" revelation for Hina is super boring / generic too.
This has got to be the worst confession I've ever seen in any anime.
I CANNOT stop rolling my eyes when Yota confess to Hina because it is so extremely out of place and jarring.
I can't believe the same studio/ dev who write Angel Beats/ Nagi-Asu will produce a drama love story this terrible.

This anime is by far my most disappointed anime of the season.

Angel Beats has its flaw but the tone and buildup is always at the right note that we really care about these characters, and the transition and revolation feels rewarding / touchy instead of being cliche/ forced like in this serie.

I really don't want to admit this, but I think I'm starting to share some of your feelings. I love Angel Beats and this show is clearly trying to replicate some of that magic with somewhat decent ideas of its own, but something about the actual execution of it feels off and I just feel like the more sad episodes like this one would have worked better if something about it was done differently. Could be the directing since Angel Beats had a different director and this one is directed by the director for Charlotte, which had somewhat similar execution issues... but I feel like even that show was better than this one so far. I dunno anymore lol

What a piss poor episode, as many others have mentioned and I agree with all their points. Suzuki's backstory was so cliched and boring, the cyberspace metaphor was pointless and filled half the running time for no reason. A reminder that so far we have only had 2 episodes that had any sort of possible romantic connotations between Youta and Hina. Yet they love each other? They showed almost 0 signs of that around each other! I really hated Suzuki too, you'd think he'd have trust issues, no? Maybe he'd hesitate to sell Hina out? Worst episode yet, much worse than the festival episode.

I felt that before but now I really feel like we're getting Charlotte all over again, the white hair dude is really a loathsome character so having a episode focused on him makes me hate this episode even more, the end wasn't that emotional at all and overall the story really just don't make any sense to begin with, actually feels like that the plot was written randomly

I don't know if it's because I grow older or that he changed his way of work but I feel like the earliest works of Jun Maeda was way better than this and Charlotte, let's see what the end of this anime will propose but I really won't expect much after having seen Charlotte end...

Still there was funny moments on this anime, and sure the firsts episode were okay but let's not talk about the plot after those firsts episodes, shall we ?

Yikes, this show brings out the nitpicky side out of me and I don't like it XD

I don't think this was a bad episode, in fact I liked it quite a bit in a way, but I sense that everything just came so incredibly fast. Before this episode, we had 7 episodes of pretty much nothing related to the whole plot of the show, with the exception of Suzuki doing his researches for small moments in episodes.

Something I am just baffled about is that confession. You spend what, 25 days with Hina? Where did these feelings come from? What about that unrequited love, did he just forget about Izanami? I wonder if that's just me or...

As someone who spent a lot of time keeping my eye out for certain things, the transition from slice-of-life to drama wasn't that jarring at all, honestly.
The pacing is... okay. I think the insertion of Suzuki's back story came out of nowhere, but I think it justifies his desire to help Hina pretty well. He sees himself in her- a poor child gifted in technology who adults want to exploit/get rid of.

Also, from an informatics perspective, I think the ocean scene was done well. I can understand the pseudo-hacking with the whole bank thing and frantic typing though.

I still think that there are still things that can be unpredictable, like the CEO and Oguma ending up helping Hina, or Hina's body not being hers, or the importance of her clothes. The lack of a countdown timer also adds to this. I will make another infographic here when I have time.

This is such a mess. The cyberspace junk, the flashbacks and all that with hacker kid, and the episode in general were rushed as all hell and poorly done cliches. Not to mention an out of no where confession to boot, and secret corporation / government conspiracy. This is the most ridiculous change of pace and genres I've seen in a long ass time.

Man, what an absolute mess. This originally seemed like it would have been a pretty good anime too. It should have stayed an SoL comedy, this is far too much genre change whiplash. The cracks appeared with the hacker kid originally, but in this episode, the anime just completely shattered into nothing.

I really loved the revelations arround Hina's supercomputer head, I had something like that in my thoughts, but not the way it was revealed. I kinda didn't like the graphic representation of hacking tho, and also the confession didn't really felt like one, I'd say the spotlight goes for the white haired hacker and his backstory, but I couldn't help but cry when Hina didn't even try to run away, so hopeless... Still, this still has a long way before becoming the saddest anime here.

Pretty wack episode. We get Hackerman’s abusive backstory, then he finds that Hina has a quantom computer chip in her head that keeps her alive, then MC tells her that he loves her, then she is taken away. People are saying that Youta’s love is more in a sibling sense, but the past few episodes hint otherwise, so it is ambiguous at best.

To clarify, I actually enjoy melodrama, but the genre comes with a lot of risks. The biggest one is if it is not done well (i.e. doesn’t produce an emotional response) then it is in No Man’s Land where it is too unrealistic for drama, yet not emotional enough for melodrama. Here’s to hoping that it clutches the ending, because it is definitely in No Man’s Land right now.
