I know there's a lot of discussion about this else where and even 1 in MAL at 2013 but imma bring it up again.

Does reading a manga first spoils the experience for the anime for you? Personally if its romance or slice of life manga doesn't affect it but when it comes to series that have some unknown history/mystery going on such as attack on titan, a usual 9/10 would be a 7 or 8/10 for me.

How about you guys? What makes it a 10/10 still a 10/10 and what makes it not?
And for those that would reco anime only watchers to read the manga, what do you have to say about this?

Not really. Titles that rely on world building like Made in Abyss are almost always better in video format than in print.

Not really, the story would've to be lackluster if going through it one time is enough to kill it.

Revisiting a series through the anime allows to me to focus on other aspects and to pick up more details which ultimatively allow me to enjoy it more. Recent example, Jujutsu Kaisen. Additionally, the staff is doing a fantastic job with the anime adaptation.

I prefer reading the manga after watching the anime to make comparisons and see how much they differentiate.

My favorite are old 50+ shoujo series based on on-going manga. Seeing how the staff express themselves creatively in the "filler" episodes and elsewhere is always a joy.

I usually first watch the anime and then read the manga (except for very few exceptions) but that's just because I'm not very much of a manga reader, but I might be interested to read the manga version of an anime I enjoyed. So with this logic I say no. For me, manga is kind of a filler or a continuation of the anime, that probably adds more to the world of the series.

Nah I rate an anime solely on how good it is on its own

Reading the manga beforehand doesn't improve or spoil the anime unless the anime is just a bad adaptation wich would of course make the anime worse

It doesn't ruin my experience. I'm perfectly fine with watching a show which has a manga that I've already read.

I prefer reading the manga after the anime. Manga is usually better so if you read it first it makes it harder to enjoy the anime. I like to enjoy the anime then appreciate the extra details of the manga afterwards.

I personally can't stand watching something I know how it's gonna end. I could go with spoilers but knowing who everyone is and how everythings gonna work out I just get bored.

Most of the time yes, I can't finish an anime which manga I've already read.

The only time I can finish is when it's an episodic, slice of life comedy like Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun and Wotakoi.

Not ruin but definitely lessens my enjoyment simply because I already know what's going to happen, which takes away most of the excitement for me. Ive had 1 episode left of Vinland Saga for 2 weeks but no great urge to watch it.

I'm glad you brought this up with a goblin slayer avatar.
reading the manga first 100% ruins the anime for me.
I've read goblin slayer and felt disgusted by the anime.
there were two reasons I read that manga.
1. gorgeous art
2. violence
goblin slayer guy was nonstop cgi almost
the animation sucked
the superb detail was missing from the anime, but I won't hold this against them.
but the violence was so toned down I was watching an entirely different genre.
yet everyone bitched about the rape scene at the start.
the thing is, a product like this won't please those who want gore, but the hypersensitive snowflakes will always throw a fit even at the mention of such acts.

another one around the same time was shield hero. shieldguy is a very angry person by default. he's like that in the web novel, the light novel and the manga as well. the anime director decided to make him a sad sack. he also made a LOT of other unnecessary changes. just think about it. in the original story naofumi gets so angry he shuts the world out. fueled rage, he unlocks the shield of rage.
in the anime he's very sad about imagining raphtalia leaving him, so he unlocks the shield of rage. amazing.

For me, spoilers actually help me to enjoy the anime. Because I know what will happen (to some extent), so I know what to look for.

I am easily distracted and find myself doing other things while the episode is running on the second monitor (like checking MAL, browsing Twitter, checking if the ceiling is still there, ...), so knowing what happens helps me to focus. I have an expectation in mind and just need to fill the connecting gaps while watching.

Most of the time it does. I for the most part prefer anime over manga since it takes less time for me to watch. I usually only read manga if a series was not concluded or if I'm really curious about the difference between the anime and the manga in storytelling.

Not personally. In fact I've gone out of my way to read first the manga and then watch the anime adaption for a few series. it's especially rewarding to see a manga you like a lot get animated (assuming it's a good adaption).

I mean, if I read a manga and then watch its adaptation and it's well adapted, if I felt like I liked it less then it's more like I'll be questioning how I read/how properly was I invested in the manga to begin with if knowing some spoilers makes it less enjoyable.

Not for me! If I've read a manga and it gets an anime adaptation, I'm just excited to get to see it in an anime! i.e Horimiya, which I've kept up with throughout the years, is getting an anime adaptation in January and I couldn't be more excited to see it!!

Nah, I spoil myself by reading the wikis for the specific manga/anime anyways.

I am always interested to see how Anime producers come up with their own bs in order to offer supposedly something different by switching gender roles or adding characters that weren't supposed to be there (see Gyo movie and Lord Leon OVA after reading the manga).

It really depends on a lot of different factors. There are some anime that make the experience way more enjoyable than the material they're adapting itself (Kimetsu no Yaiba being the perfect example), while there are some anime that can even ruin your manga experience after they adapt the material, because of how appalling the adaptation is (Tokyo Ghoul, specifically :re). Other times, it has to do with the pacing as well, since the main advantage of the manga format is the simple fact that you can read it at the speed you want, and that, if you don't want, you don't have to pass through all those flashbacks you already know perfectly about. You can simply skip them in the manga, while the anime forces you to watch them at the pacing/speed they want you to, which can be really frustrating sometimes (like in One Piece).

Talking in more general terms, manga doesn't usually ruin my experience with the anime as long as the adaptation is loyal and good enough. In fact, it can elevate my enjoyment with the series (as it usually happens to me with Shingeki no Kyojin).

It really depends, but I'll say some anime only work on a audiovisual media. Reading the manga feels like reading spoilers, as you don't actually feel anything when you read some important event.

you talk as if there is nothing to manga experience. As if the only thing it does it inform you of the story. it is not. There is no such thing as "ruined" anime experience because of manga, that makes no sense. The experience of discovering the story and world is bestowed upon the manga, so the anime will be different, that's obvious.
but your really talk about it as if the only thing reading manga does is ruin anime experience. That is false, and reading manga is an experience in and of itself, independent of animes.

Personally, I feel that reading a manga first enhances my sense of excitement when I come around to watching the Anime. Despite knowing what to expect, I get excited seeing how they choose to direct certain scenes that stood out to me when I first saw it in the manga. That anticiaption makes it all the more better when I finally see those certain scenes animated. Though, I will add on that, it does also make me kind of nitpick the anime for little things they decided to leave out or become disappointed if they did major changes. I do agree with your point about mystery though, as the whole point of mystery is to shock the audience, seeing that major plot point again takes away that initial shock you had when reading it.

As for what I would tell Anime only watchers, I would say that think of the Anime as an "advertisement" of sorts. It should naturally draw you in, if it resonated with you, to read the manga. You might even find enjoyment, much like me, seeing those extra little scenes that weren't in the anime.

Thanks man this is making me want to read the manga version of goblin slayer. After the anime ended I wanted to see the difference between both media but all I found was the diff sequence in arcs. Imma read the manga before the 2nd season starts

Hi of course I'm not implying a inverse relationship between manga and anime. As per what SolitaryStranger said there are many factors that contributes to an enjoyment of an anime and I'm looking into 1 of those factors. I agree that manga as itself is a wonderful experience that anime cant/hard to express again. Just that my experience goes with attack on titan I can't seem to enjoy season 3 after reading the manga even tho the scenes was epic, hence I wanted to see others experience with manga to anime. Perhaps my phrasing of 'ruin' should be more like 'disinterest' or 'less enjoyable'

No, I know the anime adaptation will make changes or differ from the manga. But it doesn't ruin the anime experience for me. I know some anime that outdid their manga counterpart. So I keep an open mind when it comes to anime.

I don't read a lot of mango so for me, the anime experience is better than the mango experience. I feel like it would suck to read a romance or sol manga over the anime because those are genres where the anime can add the most value to. Other genres, idrk but a good fookin sol can be enhances massively by some nice music and you'd probably value that experience more rather than reading it in mango.

Manga definitely ruins an anime's experience. Stuff like knowing what's going to happen in a story before it happens & Picking on minor differences between manga and anime affect the experience.

Edit: However, in some circumstances, it actually makes it better due to like hype for a certain scene to be animated et cetera.
