| Over the past 5 years or so I've seen more and more Anime fans start referring to themselves as Weebs and even consider it "cool" to label yourself as one. You even have fans that consider weeb to be a personality trait. This shit is just absolutely bizarre to me as someone who came up when being a "Weaboo" was the last thing any Anime fan wanted to be referred to as. Even calling yourself an Otaku back then wasn't considered "cool". I think part of why this is happening is because "Anime fan" and "Weeb" have some how become synonymous. You can't just be an Anime fan that enjoys Anime without caring much for Japanese culture anymore. You have to be well versed in Japanese/Weeb culture to be an "Anime fan" as well and if you aren't, you're considered a "normie" by community standards. I feel like all this does is just create more "Gate Keeping" and division among the community. What are your thoughts? disagree or agree? |

| It's just a meme word equivalent to simp. Taking it seriously would only mean you belong to that group, or at least that's how it would be portrayed on the internet. |

| come on now, that is a large stretch, it was probably better to call yourself xXthot_slayer_69Xx than a 'weeb'. i don't think people use 'weeb' as a way to make themselves look cool. hell, even saying you watched anime is enough to have a kick me note behind you every day for a month. |

| Honestly, I mostly see Weeb used in an ironic/self-deprecating way these days. It kind of has the vibe of "anime was a mistake... and yet here I continue to love it." |

| No one ever used to call themselves a ‘weeb’ since you’d definitely get picked on or people could have some bad ideas about you but now people use it as a way to call themselves anime watchers? I personally find it embarrassing and people who do surely haven’t been a part of this community for a long time. |

| I believe that many people identify themselves as "Otaku" or "Weeaboo" without actually figuring out the actual definition behind those derogatory terms. One does not simply go around and declare themselves as a "Retard" or "Mentally Deranged Person" especially when they are aware of what those terminologies meant. For myself, I am proud of my Japanese Popular Culture Hobbyist ("J-Hobbyist") identity as it is more appropriate to describe a Hobbyist who is into Japanese Popular Culture than some derogatory terms. |

| Ehhh, i love calling myself a weeb, its like a convenient term. I also am Interested in stuff like Manga, LN, WN, VN, Games and the japanese culture itself so i think the word is easy to use to generally define my interests. About gatekeeping, I think most gatekeeping about "Being a real anime fan" comes from people who want their "Normie" friends to genuinely enjoy the stuff that they do. Thats why, in a way, i like to do so myself. I don't attack someone who doesnt watch anime, but i also ALWAYS recommend some hardcore Weeb stuff when i see someone getting into this culture... |

Now if someone insults you with that word, you wouldn't care as much. Yeah but being a Weaboo is loving Anime and wanting to be Japanese. Now Anime fans unironically call themselves weebs even if they don't fit the definition of Weeb. So it's kind of dumb altogether. Would make more sense if they just called themselves Otaku instead like before. But I dunno a lot of fans tend to really jerk off to Japan lately so maybe I'm wrong. Maybe they do fit the weeb definition after all. |

| "Weeb has also become popular outside of 4chan. Whereas on 4chan weeb is meant as a harsh insult, it is usually used jokingly on other social media sites to describe someone as an ardent fan of Japanese culture. Some people even proudly self-identify as weebs." The definition and the use of Weeb/Weeaboo has changed. As simple as that. Normie, Anime fan, Weeblet, Weeb, Veteran Weeb. These are titles given to anime fans according to how experienced one is when it comes to anime. I don't see whats wrong with it and I don't understand why are you so bothered by it? These are literally joke titles given to people to determine how much experience does one have in anime, most of the time use it in a joking manner, or make memes with it. People around the anime community have made it a running gag when normies call anyone and everyone a weeb, people just started saying "Yeah, we are weebs, so what?" thats it. The reason why Otaku is cringe worthy is because Otaku is a term that is explicitly used in Japan, only the Japanese people can say that. So yeah when some outsider declares themselves to be an otaku, its cringe. I'm starting to think that the MAL community is the cringe part of the anime community filled with people with superiority complex.
