Once upon a time I judged Ping Pong the Animation, and I will watch it at some point. I have gotten over the phase of not watching something due to how it looks. I have watched Mononoke, Gankutsuou and a good amount of Ashita no Joe, so no "bad/different/weird artstyle" can put me off anymore.

One piece has some really strong emotional moments and backstory but the artstyle is just so goofy and stupid that it ruins the moment for me

are you insulting gainax? Houseki no kuni efficiently used CG to look beautiful and 3 gatsu and HxH surely has bad artstyle but somehow managed to look good animation wise.

I have no idea what you're talking about.

Are there specific things that make you dislike the animation/artstyle of a show? I'm asking because I consider some shows you mentioned to be the most visually interesting stuff to come out in the past few years.

There is nothing specific although I generally prefer when there's no horrible 3D (HnK) and I don't like stupidly over the top animation (KlK). Sometimes I absolutely hate the character design (SoraYori), or the out of the place weird direction (3-gatsu). Sometimes the colour pallet makes me pyuk (NGNL) while sometimes it's just visually too absurd and superficial (Monogatari Series). HxH 2011 is a massive downgrade visually compared to the original 99 and the actions scenes lacked movements and fluidity (The camera moved more than the characters, instead the characters mostly just appeared and disappeared elsewhere on screen with a bunch of flashy lines just to make things even more annoying.)

It only happens rarely these days. It’s usually with stuff that’s experimental or at least “out there”. For example, I’ve been meaning to watch this rec I got for ages, but I keep putting it off.

I generally don’t let it outright prevent me from watching something. Ping Pong the Animation broke me of that.

Yes, totally.

Kill La Kill for example is so unwatchable for me because the artstyle puts me off.

When i started anime yes..i once saw jojo on an ad(didnt knew what jojo was) and the only thing that put me off was the art artstyle and i didnt care about the unique features that it has..another example can be Kobayashi-san it was diffrent but i still watched it tho..now its not a problem i actually like diffrent artstyles and jojo is one of my favorite anime now

Usually I'm not bothered by the art whatsoever. I don't mind trying fresh and new ideas for art. I know too many people that wouldn't start One Piece for its art. I wonder if they feel the same for the likes of anime such as Lupin the IIIrd.

LapisLazulis said:
Pokemon Sun and Moon, the animation is very good at times, but the artstyle just isn't for me, even after a few episodes I really couldn't get the hang of it and just gave up

XY had the best artstyle imo

I think this is one of the exceptions. Although I never was a big fan of the Pokemon anime, Sun and Moon really wasn't for me. I get that the studio was trying something new and all, but I never saw a problem with the art style prior. I feel like everything from Season 1 Pokemon and onward was just the art evolving as time went on (similar to how One Piece's art evolves), but Sun and Moon was just a 180.

Im a superficial jerk and IMO the style on the girls was kind of ugly . I have no love for ugly anime girls I only want the beautiful once . They look weird and that put me off

The art sort of irked me... Gonna follow the words of the Yuri-Crusader on this one!

For me it would be kingdom, I just read the manga.

They say it gets better but I’m not watching that shit “for it to get better”

Looks like a Youtuber with 20k subs tried to make that animation. Who thought that was a good idea? Lmao

That’s the only anime that I have ever turned down due to the art style. On top of that it’s laggy af like wtf?

The rest of these anime’s don’t even deserve to be here. Like you really can’t watch ahiru no sora, jojo, mob, one piece, etc over that animation style? R u kiddin? Istg bruh some people.

I'll admit it Tower of God's art style is really what's making me not want to watch the show, the characters are barely shaded and look unfinished in a way and they don't look like they fit in their environment. Idk it's just weird

Ehh, i hate CGI overall, if it was something similar to Dorohedoro which i gave it a 9 i woulda loved it, for me the best usage of CGI woulda been in Vinland Saga cause they made it hard to spot and it was well done.

Yeah Vinland Saga was anime of the year in my opinion, but what im saying is that they used the CGI pretty well considering the whole anime was animated using it, it didn't looked weird or slow. I don't like the use of CGI in mordern animes tbh, but they did a great job, it was a really high quality production, at least in my eyes.

it really sucks that a lot of yaoi anime have an old kind of art style that im just not a fan of. like i want sum cute round face shit please

(no hate towards triangle face lovers)

the art style and animation play a huge roll in my likes and dislikes. an art style can really determine
whether i watch the show or not

Not an anime but I really hated Ben 10 Omniverse because of the art-style.

Ben 10 is among the best shows for me (TV Shows, anime combined) but they ruined everything in Omniverse. Totally halted looking for updates after that.

Bad animation will put me off a show. In the case of Kingdom I just went to the manga. Once I get around to Berserk going to the manga as well though I may check out the 97 version after I read it.

Weird art style though I don't mind at all. That will never put me off if it has decent animation and a good story or premise. Ping Pong the Animation is one of the best sports anime I have seen and in the end I appreciate what was a weird art style by the end.

No. Never. I have only dropped shows because I don't like them or I don't wanna watch them for some other reason. Like Naruto Shippuuden is too long and has too much filler so I'd rather read the manga. I love me my Devilman Crybaby even though the art is weird.

...I'm not gonna read all these replies, I know a few of them are gonna break my heart.

Anyway, I actually almost dropped Gankutsuou at first. I was super excited, hell yeah an anime adaptation of the classic Count of Monte Cristo, but god damn I did not expect what they were gonna do with the texture overlay stuff. I really wanted to watch it though so I powered through and eventually adjusted, but I had to watch that show farther away from my screen.

I can see why Jojo but mob psycho? Mob physio's animation was the first reason I got into it.

I made the post for art style specifically, I know I should have mentioned it that as you are not the first person to say that. Mob Psycho is lit. But I wonder how this thread is still going on. This kind of thread is made at least thrice a week and how does people not get tired of answering to the same threads again and again?

Rarely, I like when styles are more unique and different. If there was any art style that bugged me I guess, was alien 9, just because I didn’t like how the ears were very big and low on the heads, but even then I enjoyed other parts of the art, like the eyes. Kinda makes me sad when people drop shows just because the art style is a little different. But hey, that’s on them man.

I’ll still watch something with really bad animation, but the story better be good you know?
