It's not often that you see shows nowadays that use pieces of music made by the likes of Mozart, Dvorak, Beethoven and Chopin, but when used properly, they often turn out with great results. I think it's thanks to anime and opera-themed shows that I have an appreciation towards classical music.

What show in your opinion has the best use of classical music? Which song did you like the most and where was it implemented in said show?

Mine is of course LotGH.

Nothing beats to me the legendary use of the famous Ravel's Bolero in Digimon Adventure:

One of the reasons I love this show so, so much (among many) is precisely because of the choice to use this piece in heavily atmospheric and captivating moments in the show :)

Princess Tutu is the best integration of classical music I've seen in anime yet. The most iconic one it uses is definitely Waltz of the Flowers, and damn the usage at key events and it's sync with the ballet sequences is just superb.

The lotgh film that came out before the main OVA series features a very entertaining sequence with spaceships blowing up to classical music. I don't remember which piece it was unfortunately but it's probably mentioned in the end credits.

That ave maria song put in random situations, popuko feeding pidgeons, chickens flying in church in jinrui wa suitai shimashita and jashin-chan getting a beat down.

There was one in Major that i found really cool.
When Mayumura was nervous during a match and he started imagining a symphony in his head so he could stay calm.
New World Symphony was the song.
I think he was a pitcher, i don't remember correctly.

It's not exactly classical music (ie not by a classical composer, although it's titled Argonaut fro the Greek myths), but I love the orchestral OST in Danmachi, especially the following:

Heroic Desire "Eiyuu Ganbou" (Argonaut) [Familia Myth]

Probably Evangelion's use of Ode to Joy in the famous scene with Kaworu. I don't really like the song that much, but the scene's use of it is amazing. As someone who knows the German of the original song, the singing fit eerily well for the situation too.

In Nodame Cantabile when they're playing Rachmaninov. The piece of course plays a more active part than just being part of the background.

I quite like the usage of Chopin's Nocturne op. 9 no. 2 in Girls' Last Tour and the use of Erik Satie's Gymnopédie no.1 in the Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya.

Shostakovich's 7th Symphony "Leningrad" in Haruhi Suzumiya, the Day of Sagittarius battle scene.

Debussy's "Reverie" in the Disappearance of Nagato Yuki-chan.

And of course Offenbach's "Chaan Chakachakachan-chan Chakachakachan-chan Chakachakacha-kachakachakachaan" in K-On!

I've only noticed classical music in two anime, and they were both great

Of course it's a key element in Your lie in April
But it couldn't compare to the majestic use of classical music during grandiose space battles in Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu

First time I heard Dvorak's symphony during a battle was glorious, best music use I've ever seen

Few people have already mentioned LotGH.

I also really like Gymnopédie No. 1 as it's used in The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya.

The overture of Die Meistersinger of Wagner in Boogiepop wa Warawanai (2019).

Finally, a positive view on Wagner! I really cannot hear anymore - in fiction - pieces such as the Walkürenritt which are always associated to nazis (Black Lagoon and tons of movies). Furthermore, this piece is probably not his most impressive one (hade, 派手), but I like it a lot and was really happy to see it in this anime. I would also rather have this piece played at my funeral than a depressing requiem! (shinki-kusai rekuiemu, 辛気くさいレクイエム)

Actually, I think I'm the only one who has actually mentioned it so far. Which is a shame. It's a great fantasy drama. Definitely deserves more recognition.

It's not technically classic or old but it's themed to sound classic, I'm talking about In the palace~lamentoso that Shaiapouf plays in Hunter X Hunter, You'd probably expect some hype moving music in a shounen but lamentoso really fits Hunter X Hunter and especially the Chimera arc.

Another vote for Tutu. I've yet to experience a better synthesis of classical and anime. It was damned near operatic in its musical specificity per scene.

And I'd be remiss not to mention LOGH for the sheer scale of compositions used

Another that's near and dear to me is Mahler's Adagio in Hana Yori Dango. Arguably one of the most beautiful things penned imo.

Now regarding actual classical music, I did just get into Nodame Cantabile and they're already playing Beethoven. I'm a big fan of classical piano and orchestral arrangements in general, so this show already appeals to me and it's just nice to have an anime that is actually rooted in this type of music.

In Hibike Euphonium you have Jacques Offenbach's Orpheus in the Underworld Overture in the below clip at 1:44 after quite a dramatic build up:

Shinji plays Suite No. 1 For Cello in G Major (Prelude), Johann Sebastian Bach

Regarding orchestrated music in anime, one composer who blows me away is Michiru Oshima. A personal favorite is from Little Witch Academia, in a scene where Akko is contemplating if she has what it takes to bring her dreams into fruition by a secret fountain. The song is called "words". It's fantastic.

I almost forgot Kids on the Slope! Claire de Lune plays when the MC is practicing his piano in his house for his sister, if I recall.

This doesn't really fit OP's question, but there's a harpsichord song in Monogatari that sounds just like something out of the Baroque Period... I remember liking it, but I forgot what scene it was in and never found it again, haha.

If they use the pieces everyone knows, like ones from Chopin, Mozart, or Beethoven, then it would probably be more distracting than whatever effect they're trying to achieve, unless they're deliberately going for a parodying effect.

LotGH. I mean, so much variety, and they're also well used. During dialogues, during space battles and of course, there's the one that plays a lot for the Galactic Empire which I like.

This happened and surprisingly it ended up too serious and dramatic. Irony is it as based on a parody manga, though it has drama too and the movie Version is funnier.
In Violinist of Hameln TV, they spent the whole budget licensing classical music pieces for the Ost instead of the animation. The one responsible for the arrangement is Kohei Tanaka. It shows. Later on still shots are used instead of animation.

Beethoven's Emperor Concerto in the climax of episode 26 of the 2003 anime Gilgamesh.

Many episodes of Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu naturally.

Doubtless many others, but I don't want to go back over my list right at the moment. The first example stands out most prominently in my mind.
