Been a while, but guess I'll be back to comparing differences between the manga and anime for Fruits Basket. This first episode for the "second season" adapts Chapters 42 and 49 from the manga. This does result in scenes between the two chapters being shuffled together to fit the narrative for this episode and adjusts the time frame for both as each chapter took place at different points of time (Chapter 42 during the first trimester of Tohru's second school year, Chapter 49 during summer break). Here are differences I noticed within this episode:
-Motoko’s thoughts for her admiration of Yuki were originally a narration in the manga. Her viewing of Yuki from a window and venting over Tohru’s presence in his life as she arrives outside to greet Yuki were added for the anime.
-Tohru’s narration commenting on her current developments with the Sohma family was added for the anime.
-Originally when Kyo was rebuking Shigure for his remarks on summer break, he was shown clipping his toenails in the manga instead of eating a meal. Also, the clothes he is wearing are simplified in their design for the anime.
-In the same said scene for the manga, Tohru is wearing casual clothes instead of her school uniform as Chapter 49’s events originally had Yuki being the only one in the household going to school due to his student council duties.
-Before Yuki leaves for school, there’s a scene removed from the anime where Tohru asks Yuki if he had a chance to meet with the new members of the student council yet and Yuki remarked he had yet to do so. Yuki promised he would be home by dinner time.
-Shigure had some additional dialogue added for the anime when he teases Kyo and Tohru on them possibly getting more romantic with their relationship. A line of dialogue Tohru had responding to Kyo and Shigure’s exchange was removed for the anime.
-There is a removed scene showing Yuki being greeted by some female students at the school entrance.
-A dialogue exchange between Takei’s assistants regarding the motives of the Yuki Fan Club got removed from the anime.
-The anime added some additional visual content to Motoko’s thoughts regarding a female council member possibly being attracted to Yuki.
-In the scene with the Yuki Fan Club venting over Takei, there’s a removed scene showing the girls wondering who will be the next club president after Motoko graduates.
-Instead of the trio of delinquent girls running by Motoko to see Arisa, the Yuki Fan Club noticed the three were already crowding around Arisa and Tohru in the manga. As covered from their last appearance in the anime, only one of the girls developed admiration for Arisa in the manga. The other two had crushes on Yuki (who is not with Arisa and Tohru in the anime) and had approached him in the manga instead of Arisa.
-The mess caused by Machi in the counseling room was expanded some for the anime. Also, Yuki’s thoughts of his meeting with her and Kakeru were removed for the anime.
-The scene with Takei and Yuki chatting over Machi and Kakeru being student council members was shortened for the anime, notably removing Yuki wondering about Machi’s habits.
-Before running into Yuki, Motoko and Aida originally planned to try finding blueprints of the school premises in the manga instead of picking the lock to the student council room. This does lead to some differences in some of the conversation that Yuki has with the two girls between the anime and manga.
-When Yuki and Motoko have their conversation in the hallway, Aida appeared near the end of it in the manga and gets befuddled over what went on in their exchange.
-While washing dishes with Tohru, Yuki was in his Chinese-style casual clothes instead of his school uniform in the manga.
-The montage of shots showing Sohma family members and Motoko during Yuki and Tohru’s conversation were added for the anime. |
