If the village was founded by Senku's father and his astronaut friends (who were mostly scientists), why is it, 3700 years later, still a small hunter-gatherer society?

1) How did the population stay so small for so long? Even if we account for high mortality rate due to war and disease, humanity should still be numbering in the millions at the very least, and should've settled most of the world.
2) What happened to agriculture, husbandry, metal working and all those things that human societies naturally develop when they settle in one place? How has their society managed to mantain the language and oral tradition from 3700 years ago but not these basic skills?
3) What happened to all the infrastructure that was left behind? Did Senku's father and his friends just decide not to use any of that? If they did use available technology, how has society managed to go back into the stone age?

Maybe it's gonna be a Guren Lagann kind of scenario, where someone/something is keeping society from evolving? Hope the show has good answers for these questions, cause if not this'll be a whole new level of hand waving.

I don't get it, yes the world's population got wiped off but the rest of humanity is still there, at least a small country with rudimentary industrial technology should have survived those 5000 years and that's thinking that 6 people couldn't have made upward of 100 people with all their knowledge before they died, and yes inbreeding can fuck up regularly bet it's not a given.

Maybe arguments happened and some people moved away and made their own villages and so on ? You can't put a group of humans together in one place without problems and arguments happening between them.

I don't like what the story is heading in this episode (and the next one), those astronauts are survivors, the next episode will probably show how awesome they mangage to land on Earth and start colonization, but they're already dead in Senku's time, and I don't like watching dead people, I don't like how Senku will never meet his father again, this is not what he deserved at all.

if you don't like it you will HATE a lot of other episodes LuL

geeeeee talk about taking away the incentive of mystery

Anyway, great episode! I was prepared for this because the other episodes seemed to raise my suspicion. But I'm also super sad that Senku and his dad will never meet again. It's like his dad finally becoming an astronaut turned out to be a death wish. Imagine if he had just turned to stone like Senku and then survived with Senku. Damn. :'(

I like that the show is shounen. If we had even a glimpse of their psychologies right now it would be nightmare fuel. IMAGINE finding that your parents helped build and entire village so that their child could benefit a couple hundred years later!! The sense of loss! the dissonance!

Great episode. A little slow at times, but overall really interesting. I'm still curious to see how they explain the fact that birds were petrifying first and how that relates to humans.

It's so sad knowing you are watching Earth changing dramatically with your own eyes and there's no one on Earth to help you, knowing you are one of the six survivors :(

Okay, I have a problem with this. 3700 years is way too long for there to just be this little, primitive village. It just doesn't add up. This is too huge of a timeframe. It feels more like maybe s hundred years.

You kinda understand why in a few more episodes, if not season 2. It actually makes sense. Also, people worried about Kohaku and senku being siblings. Don't worry. Your OTP is safe. Just know..

Even if humans did eventually split into many groups, unless this happened recently in anime time (~100 years prior or so), this village shouldn't be the way it is. Building societies from scratch is one thing humans excel at, especially when they have the knowledge to do so.
And the villagers mentioned at one point that there wasn't anyone outside the village except for the few that had been expelled, which means they have no collective memory of any large split in their society, so that theory can be ruled out.

Damn, both Kohaku and Ruri sure have some strong ass genes xD Nobody would think there are more than three millennia between them and Lilianne.

Overall, quite interesting backstory episode. I especially liked how they portrayed the scene when Byakuya and co. realized what happened to the people on Earth. The whole sequence was really well executed and the OST used was perfect.

Now, looking forward to next week to see how those six become the new Adam and Eve.

The world is big, not just that one country, we're talking about the entire planet. We still don't know how many villages are there. In 3700 years, I guess there'll be loads of villages spread across the world that formed over the time, because I don't think the mangaka was planning for all the events to only happen in that small area with the same characters, or it'll get pretty repetitive.

I don't think such a point can get past the mangaka and we're still in the middle of that flashback. Probably more explanations will be coming in the next few episodes. Let's see.

The beginning was really heartwearming and then just a ton of information about everyone and everything. Even Lillian got really flashed out and the song was actually nice to listen to.

The initial genpool being limited to only 6 is however worrying. I guess plot convenience makes it work?

It's like one of those stories wherein you go, "wait a minute, that's not possible. How come this or that happened" and then some time later a chapter comes along where you'll go, "oh yeah, that could work, I guess I didn't think of that."

This episode left me confused. If those six astronauts started the Ishigami village, then how tf is that still so little and primitive? If they landed in Japan (considering that they built the village in Japan, they probably did land in Japan), then why didn't the father go find Senku and take him? He probably knows where his school is.

Welp, the author isn't dumb, so I believe he will not leave questions like those unanswered. Maybe he already answered but I'm anime only so idk.

This anime has terrible voice actors.

What do you mean? Senku has awesome voice so do kohaku , gen and chrome

Senku's va doesn't fit to the character, he sounds like a brat, which he isn't supposed to. Gen is a massive dissapointment, what I mean is that Miyano Mamoru is more then perfect for this role, and va that ended up playing him isn't giving the same vibe that Mamoru whould've. And what the cast of new characters has done in the latest episode is embarrassing. The only va, that is ok, is Kohaku.

Also I think the voice actors are GOOD. I don't want Mamo as Senku. I think the bratty voice is OK. He sounds cocky which is part of his personality.

Really good episode, lots of info revealed, still a lot more mystery but.....i forgot first episodes but...i find one thing in particulary interesting.....did i see Senku finding out about the whole petrification thing before it happened to humans? (birds)

It's like he already studied that thing before it actually happened on a global scale to humans....somehow, i feel like there's more mystery there as well....Or at the very least, it's very interesting little story bit.

Woow this is so amazing
I can't even imagine. You are out there in space, suddenly see this green wave of light all over the planet and find out everyone turned into stone

I never thought about astronauts but now everything makes sense.
Next thing are the speculations about "who is who's descendant" I guess lmao
As for me, I definitely felt good chemistry between Byakuya and Lillian there. And the other blonde guy reminded me of Kinro. If the "shippings" turn out with ByakuyaxLillian and the already married couple being the married couple, then that leaves the blonde guy with the brunette which is basically Kinro then lmao

Not gonna lie tho.. This is really sad ಥ_ಥ

That was an already ongoing phenomena. It all started with the swallows. They were the first and only species besides humans to turn into stone

Remember the scene where Taiju and Yuzuriha went to the veterinary?
Or how Senku had collected petrified swallows when he awoke after 3700 years? He had a shelf in his little house stuffed with them

This episode, while it still contained a lot of the humour that I love, had that bittersweet feeling of sadness to it. =(

Senku's father, Byakuya, is one amusing man and thanks to Senku's efforts, Byakuya finally became an astronaut and was able to fly out to the International Space Station, along with Lilianne, whose song that she sung live back to Earth was really nice and soothing.

The 6 astronauts time was fun and all, but sadly, they had to witness the entire petrification of Earth in front of their eyes. Thankfully, some live camera feeds and the internet was still operating and they were able to confirm what happened to the entire human population.

Byakuya's determined plan to head back down to Earth is the right thing to do, instead of staying in the space station, worrying themselves to death. I have a feeling the next episode will be filled with even more sadness, but also with hope as well. =)
They are 10 BILLION PERCENT death now. Since the car scene that I liked Senku's dad. It's rare to see such a good dad in a anime.

about why this village is so primitive even if it was built by astronauts is fairly simple.
They are smart but they don't have "wide" knowledge, so they couldn't make and teach things that would truly advance society (like before Gutenberg most people were illiterate), also are civilisation has already extracted/mine most of "surface" deposits of raw materials.

I am honestly disappointed. Looks like it end with cliffhanger though, so maybe there will be some point, but so far, this is just useless filler without point. All you needed was 2-5 minutes explanation of Senku's father being astronaut in space, witnessing petrification. Senku's father was good established character as loving father enough. I don't need whole episode of listening his terrible voice acting. I don't need to know what kind of jerk he was. I don't need to know who he banged instead of Senku's mom to establish this village people ancestors. I absolutly don't need to know his fellow jerk crew, characters which have no point or influence on main plot line. I DON'T NEED EPISODE OF THIS AND I CERTAINLY DON'T NEED ANOTHER ONE!

+1, this was a fantastic episode.

I gotta admit, I got totally played by Lillian in the beginning. I thought she was obnoxious but when she was started laughing I kinda started laughing as well and the whole thing made her more lovable. xD

Really liking Senkuu's Dad too, he's an awesome guy.

Sometimes this show really make me appreciate humanity for we've come as a civilization. That montage with Lillian singing and people around the world just listening to a stream from space was amazing.

Also, about Senkuu and his father - Everybody's talking about Senkuu realizing that he'll never see his father again. But didn't he already know that when everyone got petrified, his father was outside of earth? I think he have already guessed that they'll never meet again... but who knows... please don't spoil :)

Regarding the state of the village. it's possible that the astronauts landed super far away (let's say united states?) and only super recently did people reach japan? it's an island and relatively small compared to the rest of the world. It would be far more likely that they would reach china or korea. assuming they start in america. The biggest problem is how far behind the civilization is after 3000 years. I find it super hard to believe that 2 doctors, an astrophysist professor (or whatever senku's dad was) and other people working on clearly very academic roles (other than the singer) wouldn't have produce better educated offsprings that could at least perpetuate knowledge. Sure they can't teach everything for everyfield but you would think they would have a good writing system, basic math knowledge and probably some sort of agriculture system.
