I thought that times had changed and the whole stereotype era was over with. Maybe they don't have such an appeal as others would?

Black or white, I don’t care about the skin color of the characters. That being said, the Japanese focus on their everyday life, and black people are not in their everyday life as there are not many black people in anime.

Yeppers. Anime is still mostly made for the Japanese market and with the vast majority of Japan's population being asian they don't feel the need to have representation for minorities that barely exist in Japan.

I think the only show with a black people thay I’ve watched is Run with the Wind, and that’s because of the fast Jamaicans (I think some were Jamaicans?).
Even then, I legit did not think “Oh black representation let’s go!”, instead I was like “Oh, a black guy. Cool”.

very moving clip. thank you for sharing with the class.

in regards to the title, japan's xenophobic (arguably racist), and there's little of the representation idea which we see in the west. so it's not surprising as to the lack of black (or indeed those from the middle east, india etc) representation.

To be fair though, a weirdly large number of characters look oddly European without any indication given that they are foreigners or recent-generation immigrants or something like that.

These two characters are cousins:

The way I see it: one of those characters is clearly meant to look Eastern and the other clearly Nordic — there are a great many Nordic-looking characters in that series with no explanation given as to why about 40% of a Japanese school looks Nordic with the other 60% looking Eastern.

In other series it's portrayed with realism: Gosick takes place in Europe but there are several foreigners; one of the two leads is originally from Japan and is one of the few characters with black hair and looks convincingly Japanese; there are also some North-African and Subsaharan-African characters that also realistically look the part.

Even if many people in Japan were colored, it would still happen. just as it was with the American cartoons, only now they are changing it in the west.

Where with "the west" you mean "The United States"?

Dutch television has had a very proportional repræsentation of the actual demographic of the country since forever — the culture just isn't as sensitive about - or cognizant of race. It was never even by specific design; they just hired the best man for the job and there's a long list of such actors that aren't white. Unlike in the United States there are also no "racial accents"; I find it baffling that one can actually hear one's race from the sound of one's voice in the U.S.; there is no such thing in the Netherlands; one's accent reflects the part of the country one was raised in, not one's race.

Yeah, I mean America. I don't know anything about European cartoons the truth. And I don't know if you mean television in general, because if so, then it has nothing to do with it.

one's accent reflects the part of the country one was raised in, not one's race

He is right, even if your country disappears and you don't have any type of identification. Your language / accent is your origin.

But anyway, we are talking about racist beauty standards. And I doubt it is because it requires "additional coloring".

Well said, well said.

For whatever reason, for many Americans "black" has some super special place, not realizing that for the rest of the world it's just another race with no particular special place.

Of course, it is nigh quintessential to being American that one has a thoroughly lacking perspective of difference in cultures and circumstances and that one must act as if the same situations that apply to the U.S. apply to the entire world.

I'd love to see more diversity in anime but expecting a country where 98.5% of the population is Japanese (a lot of whom look down on other ethnicities) to include more black characters is a bit of a lost cause. That's why Michiko and Hatchin was such a breath of fresh air as far as anime go.

As for Ghost Stories yeah that's a fun dub, you should watch Golden Boy the English voice actor singlehandedly carries the entire show it's absolutely hilarious.

Then one day the Japanese can't complain about it if a few minority people in other countries organize a boycott of anime goods if they don't feature more representation of other races.
I frown at recent installments of Persona and Trails of Cold Steel that introduce harem-like elements in the story.

We need more JRPGs like the past Lunar series, where there are multiple romantic pairings in the party other than for the protagonist and main heroine.

Bush Japan doesn't care about black people.

Personally I don't really mind. Asian people are weird about race in general. It is no wonder that most of the supposedly Japanese anime characters look Caucasian. I met a thai girl who told me that kids are taught at school that black is seen as bad / evil. Hey did you guys know that before World War II kicked off Japan wanted to be recognised as equal with the white races? Australia didn't accept them as equals or allow them to emigrate to Australia fairly and Britain said nothing on the matter so Japan attacked Australia in WW2.

Sorry to tell, but they're not the only minority who are lack representation. What about darker skin as a whole? But as the audience is Japanese and most of it is in Japan... yeah, that totally makes sense.
