Amazing start, visually this was a pretty awesome treat to my eyes. Really liking the art style and animation so far and seeing all the comments here that there's a lot of ex-shaft animators invloved, this shit is LIT!

Also, already loving Maki, gotta love them eyes! So hot

Holy shit, this discussion threads are always the same. Do People really think that the word "generic" is a fair criticism? Lol you sure don't read books. Everything can be called generic because it's fucking 2019 and EVERYTHING'S BEEN DONE YET. And it's just the first episode. You think you are intelligent and "critic" when repeating the same stupid adjective for every first anime episode. But you are not, you just look like wannabe critics. "It doesn't anything new" and how is it bad? Remember that Agatha Christie didn't add anything new to the premise of her genre, and still she is the best writer of detective stories. But you would just call her "generic" LOL

The episode was fine and the animation Amazing.

I do not criticize it for generic, but for being mediocre.

The opening song is really good but I don't think that the sound matches at all with the animations, also, I was thinking like it's kinda unnecesary to rush everything in the first episode, like her mom and brother's death, the explanation of whatever the enemy are and how they spawn, and pretty much the ending is the "sister" story. It was good anyways.

The animation is simply outstanding. Everything else was meh.

The mc is charming and the rest of the cast seem interesting too. It hasn't sucked me in as much as Soul Eater did, but i'm looking forward to more of this.

Really good animation but nothing more.

That this and Dr Stone has more score than Kanata no Astra makes me lose faith in humanity. I guess it's impossible to get a good score nowadays in MAL if the anime is not a generic battle shounen.

As someone who was looking forward to Kanata no Astra the most of those three, I honestly thought the first episode was really only okay. If we're talking about generic writing, Astra was far worse in that regard than the shows you're accusing of. Every character introduced so far was a one note trope, the dialogue/humor was extremely lame, and the direction seems like it's trying too hard(From what I heard, the hand chain scene wasn't in the source material. Using the rope they had would have made much more sense. It's only the first episode, you don't need to force in friendship themes now).

Holy.. the animation and visuals are incredible it looked a lot like bones.

Character design looks good, its very rare for me to like the spiky teeths but it fits the main character. Maki hat is adorable.

Also good ending song.

I find it a little interesting that so many people are praising the visuals. Yes, there are some great scenes, but they clearly are saving up for those by using a lot of stills, limited animation, and other shortcuts. It gives everything a choppy feeling and makes it all feel a bit cheaper.

I think what I'd describe this episode as is clunky, but enjoyable. Getting out all that backstory in one episode felt a bit much and at times it really hammers its main theme, but it's still a lot of fun so far and oh man the animation was great generally. This might be my "style over substance" show since while it does seem to have some interesting story beats, at the moment it's hard to say that's why I'm here, since the delivery in this episode at least was a bit off. Still, will definitely keep up with it for now.

not a bad start. the animation was good, and overall seems like a pretty faithful adaptation

sarazanmai had even better animation than this, but the story was shit. at least here i know the source material, so i won't get disappointed
Sarazanmai had better animation? You sure about that?

ok, let me clarify what i meant. the animation of the battle scene is on par with sarazanmai, the fluidity and dynamics are there

but overall it is slow due to it being 2 different types of anime. fire force feels slow at start to develop a bit shinra's character and introduce other ones. just as you pointed out, the rumors say it will be 50+ eps, so it has time for that

whereas sarazanmai is just 1 cour anime with ikuhara at the director's seat. the staff at mappa went nuts with the dynamics, every episode felt so energetic

so yeah, overall sarazanmai wins in the animation department. not by a long shot, but it's still better

A lot like a f*ck ton of other anime, I can see boku no hero fans liking this a lot... so far it's mediocre with a storyline we've all heard before, He wants to be a hero but is seen as evil why? because for no reason he decided to never tell anyone the truth/the people for no reason decided that he was bad because... yeah no reason.

story so far 5/10 like the start of a story we've all seen before.
Art 7/10 or 8/10 can't decide I still dislike some things but eh majority is good.
music 6/10 not super unique or standing but not bad either

I overall rate through story, I was able to predict a lot of things while watching, it'd be cool if they're not demons but some sort of parasyte thingy I dunno, I'm curious about what they actually are and want an actual explanation on why they're happening, that is the only thing i'm interested in right now.

I have a bad feeling for the fire crews future, I reckon 1/more of them will eventually turn into those fire thingies that those religious types call demons.

The premise is super generic, but the visuals and the theme being built around fire fighters adds a lot of flavor to the show. Will it manage to be more than a lot of well done flashy action? We'll see, but the show had a pretty great introduction here and I'm really curious to see where it goes.

This is the truth of the current anime landscape, people flock to high budget productions. It can make a mediocre story like demonslayer into a huge hit among the masses

Totally agreed. If this had an average budget I doubt that it would even reach a 7.5. I read the manga and it's as mediocre as Black Clover or even worse.

This only applies to battle shounen though. We have Symphogear or Granbelm this season that have a high budget but they are never going to get a high score. The hypocrisy of MAL...
In case you didn't know, 300k is per episode is average for tv anime. That's far from being high budget. Animation is also an important factor when judging how good an anime is(Not just it's story and characters). Good production values can elevate any story. Likewise poor production values can be detrimental to a story no matter how good it is(kingdom is a prime example of that). So it's score is somewhat justified

There's good reason for that actually. The main staff of fire force are former shaft workers. Traditionally in shaft anime, the less hectic scenes are very limited in terms of movement, which focuses our attention on the cinematography instead (for example the flashback with shinra and his grandmother). Another reason is that the clear focus of this production is FX/effects, not character acting.

I feel very happy. Honestly, this is the anime that I most expected this season. What can I say?. I love the powers related to fire since I saw Avatar 😅. And for me, this first episode was super good. He caught me from the first minute. I love everything, from the animation, the great scenes of action, the plot, the characters, the "opening and ending" and, it goes without saying, the fabulous story 😁👌.
I think it's one of the few times I've felt like crying seeing the first episode, namely, with the promise Shinra made to his mother when he was little. When I saw those scenes, I felt a lump in my throat and my heart was moved. It reminded me of Izuku Midoriya of Boku no Hero Academy, with the great difference, that Shinra had a tragic past and as a result his dream of being a hero became stronger and he set out to find the bastard who murdered his family. I like the character.
It is obvious that this anime will be one of the best of the season. And of course, it's one of my favorites 😁. I'm looking forward to the next episode.

PS: 1. I was surprised to learn that the Captain (Zoro) and Sister Iris do not have powers, ... that would mean that they could one day become Infernals. Damn!, I hope I'm wrong about that.
2. Hahaha, Shinra's smile, it makes you laugh.
3. The squad girls, they are funny. I love. I see coming #TeamIris and #TeamMaki 😅.
4. The Infernals fight well.

The Summer season is full of good animes 👌, and there are still many more, such as: Vinland Saga, DanMachi 2, Arifureta and Toaru Kagaku no Accelerator.

okay so I think your mistaking good animation for fast pace story progression. Sure Sarazanmai is faster paced story because ikuhara was only given 11 episodes to get his ideas across but the actual animation (while it does have it's highlights) is still a couple notches below fire force (as far as action animation is concerned). Sarazanmai does have better character acting but overall it's animation is still not fire force level.

Also MAPPA did almost nothing on Sarazanmai, Lappin Track(Ikuhara's studio) did almost everything.

Man those stellar visuals almost tricked me into thinking this is an above average show haha

This, this anime was about to be top tier. Then it took the extremely generic MC shounen then we lost a lot of credit for it. Also I'm a very biased for when I see some exposition like this episode. I really hate those info dumps.

Every time there is an info dump, All you're doing is watching the pretty things on the screen because there's nothing you need to use your brain for. Thankfully this show has great animation. But I may be wrong, since (Everyone is likening this to Soul Eater for good reason) Soul eater info dumped every now and again and it turned out great but I don't think that'll happen here.

Production Value in general is 10 tiers above majority of anime. But that's it, story is likely to drag this down hard. While Characters(I don't hate the main character there's just a trait he has that makes him occasionally terrible) and Production Value will keep the score high enough.

That alone sold me, I hope its able to maintain its quality and of course, I have high expectations for the plot, hopefully it doesn't disappoint, it has a lot of room for character development.

This is what you get when you have talented staff, a generous production schedule, and producers that actually give a shit about the quality of the series. An absolute visual masterpiece. As for the content, eh... it's alright. Fire Force doesn't go full Soul Eater-level whack until 80 chapters in, so it's gonna take some time to get this series to the quality you'd expect from Okubo. Still, it's gonna be a fun start!

remember trying to read the manga but never heard much fuss about it nor it being as good as soul eater but once i saw the PV i thought maybe this is one of those shows that will get elevated from the source at least with action alone it looks amazing ,granted we got mob this year showcasing a good team with a good schedule can produce episode after episode of consistently good animation and this first episode hopefully is just the beginning of some awesome sakuga props to them doing a anime about fire it must be hard to animated that in interesting ways.

episode it's self was very shounen not bad very quick and bash it's points on the viewers head quite a bit but these kind are slow burns so ill be checking it out for action if nothing else.

I definitely understand the hype around the anime, I for one was totally ecstatic when I saw the release of this show, and now all I want to do is blow my non-existent life savings on the manga. However was the first episode worthy of a 10/10? Eh. no.
The first episode I found was rather disappointing. We got all the information we needed from a first episode. Characters, plot, and setting. Episode one is all about setting the stage, however this show decided it's time to go over board with the backstory dropping.
I understand the writers want us to feel and sympathize for our character so that we will be more than likely to root for him as the series progresses, but talk about forced writing. A backstory should be delivered slowly and piece by piece. We learn more about a character while also watching him mature and grow. Once I have his life story pieced together around 3-5 or so episodes in, I'll be much more satisfied rooting for him. However this kids entire backstory was dropped into my lap in the first episode. "I'm already full from the context you've already given me Funimation" but all Funimation says is "EAT MORRE."
I'm all for this show and I'm really interested in watching future episodes, but understand that interrupting a hype fight scene to input a sappy story about why my guy is in his situation in the first place is what we call LAZY WRITING.

The episode literary had 3 minutes of flashback and you don't want any feelings attached to the character?? I don't know about this.. what do you want hollow shells?? And in case it wasn't obvious, they haven't given anything out yet. They will piece by piece as you said.

This was a great introduction. Great music and great animation.
