Well do you?

If yes, say goodbye to all those cute sexy waifus. And say hello to this!

Not a bad future after all, huh?

EDIT; ok ok, here is a better example of realistic anime waifus from the bright future!

I'm not really sure how the latter pic looks that much more realistic than the average anime character, but whatever. Anyway, realism is to be used sparingly in an animated medium, and retain a reason to be animated at all. As much as I love Monster, it doesn't have much reason to be animated, and would benefit more from being in a live-action format.

They wanted it to be live action, but settled for rotoscoping instead. Which is good, nobody would have cared if it was live action, at least that way it went in anime history as that anime with the ugly derp faces.

Maybe because the character of latter pictures are in fact real people (vectorized)...

Please, no. We already have enough reality in our bare lives. Art should try to reach the ideals.

Realistic doesn't mean bad rotoscoping. Examples are Monster, Serial Experiments Lain, Haibane Renmei, Berserk, Texhnolyze, Legend of the Galactic Heroes, Wolfs Rain or everything Satoshi Kon/Shinichiro Watanabe has directed.

All your examples, although being a little more realistic, are still idealized versions far from reality.

Honestly I prefer the more simple designs in anime. It tends to lead to more fluid animation. Since when you have complex character designs it is really difficult and time consuming to animate.

honestly, if those who want to give an artistic touch to the series with the desire to reflect emotions or to make known a defined image of what they want to be or do, it seems perfect2me.
I'm not interested in realistic series as long as the story deserves its quality, because if it is the case if you are going to do a serie w/o any sense, pointless argm or stupid contexts but realistic better do hentai which is not that it requires a relevant or transcendent history and we all know that if it looks nice better for us. sorry for bad english tho hehe

Are there more realistic ones? Aku no Hana might be more realistic but it has also the problem of being in the uncanny valley a lot of the times and a lot of weird in between frames.

Edit: Maybe Kemonozume, Ping Pong or Sword of the Stranger?

Idealizations and caricatures are not reality. Reality is what real people looks like, and sorry for the spoiler, but Aku no Hana is how real people look in Japan (modulo the crappy vectorization). The alien (to us) physiognomy, the poor facial expressiveness, the social awkwardness... this is reality. So.. no, please, NO!

Well, I guess not. My eyes have reckonized them visuals as appealing, especially KyoAni being eye candies. I mean, for one thing girls in Japan love their eyes being called big. Why try super realistic when we have anime grown like to this day? By the way, nice 3D there.

Do I want all anime to be realistic? No.

So now being more stylized than the average anime is 'realistic'? People are naming some weird ass examples for realism in this thread. And some of the reasoning is just straight-up racist.

What I think of when I think of anime-realism are animators and artists like Hiroyuki Okiura, Satoshi Kon, Yoshitaka Amano, Yoshiaka Kawajiri, Toshihiro Kawamoto, Nobuteru Yuuki or Otomo Katsukiro, amongst others. Something with texture and details and lots of individualism in the designs. Not those texture-less, detail-less rotoscope visuals from Aku no Hana or the crayon style of someone like Yuasa. Those are on the complete opposite end of the spectrum for me.

As for whether I want realistic visuals, yes I do. I also want hyper-stylized visuals. I want all kinds of artstyles to exist in the medium to somewhat equal degrees. I could never relate to people who like one or two artstyles and hate everything else. It's the variety, the differences, the range of what you can do with animation and art that makes the medium so interesting to me. That's what I love about it, what I find to be one of the biggest advantages it has over live-action. You can get the whole range from Okiura to Ohira.

Btw I think the animator who pays the most attention to realism is Okiura. Not just the designs, but the overall package. The movement, the physics, everything is very well done. IIRC he was involved in the falling boiler scene in Akira and he also did the OP for the Bebop Movie:

Personally my favorite styles are more on the stylized side of things (Ohira, Yuasa, Koike etc...) but I can't help but love and respect the opposite end of the spectrum almost as much when it's done by someone as talented as Okiura.

And here's some 3x3s I have bookmarked of some of the artists I'd consider to be more on the realistic side of the spectrum:

For homework try to match these 3x3s to the correct names of the artists I listed above :>

I would like to know what world you live in, thinking Knights of Sidonia character designs are REALISTIC. Lmao, what? And Aku no Hana was rotoscoped, and intentionally meant to be uncanny in appearance.

Clanky72 and Pullman hit it on the head. If you want well-done "realistic" characters, it isnt hard to find in the 90s - early 2000s -- back in the day when anime characters actually had noses.

it really depend on what the anime is going for,
aku no hana (which u used the pics of) use the realistic style to make itself much more disturbing,
try comparing the manga to the anime and you'll see that the anime make you more uncomfortable than the manga which acually fit the story very well.

on the other hand if the studio is going for something more lighthearted i just can't see it working,
just try to imagine monster musume with realistic craphics, it would be a nightmare.

well, ofc the execution play a big part on if its going to be good or bad
and i don't really see alot of anime using this kind of art in the future, its alot of work.

Not really, I like when series are detailed, but mostly regarding backgrounds, objects and stuff, but when it's about characters, I don't like when they look too close to real life people, and it's cool when designs are kinda uncanny, that's a reason why Kaiji is one of my favorite series. That said, I hate when anime is too much..."anime-ish" like Clannad.

I don't think it's a good idea, the animation is getting better and better, but making animation realistic kinda defeats the purpose of it being animation, its all fantasy as in not real, so if they started to make it more "realistic" it would probably deter a lot of anime fans away.

Using Aku no Hana and Knights of Sidonia as examples of realistic anime was a terrible way to start lol

The rotoscoping in Aku no Hana is terrible. Here's what an actual realistic rotoscope animation should look like:

Nihei Tsutomu's style in Knights of Sidonia is also too bland to be realistic. His old style was better. Here's a character from the Blame! movie, based on an older manga from the same artist, which looks way better:

Definitely not. Even anime with a more mature look usually don't just go for that hyper realistic yet still very clearly anime look. Everything I've seen that has that is just slightly unsettling and unnecessary. Sometimes it has artistic merit for the story being told but for the most part I think it isn't needed

If by realistic you mean realistic character design and anatomy yes that would be nice to see from time to time. Alexander Petrov's animations look beautiful and his works are stylized in different ways.

I'm doing bit by bit self-japanese animation study these past few months. This is a good exercise and a perfect time to do a google research on that matter.

I love Satoshi Kon's character designs the most and I obviously adored something similar in a way like the likes of Toshihiro Kawamoto and Otomo Katsuhiro. If I bomb hard, I'll probably do a seppuku or never watch anime again. xD

P.S. I'm a cookie enthusiast, so that's like the most perfect reward for me aside from cheese hence my wordplay username. Where can I get these cookies? xD
