Can't really say I'm surprised. Girl on Girl is Hot, Sex Sells and all that. I watched the first couple episodes of Haruhi and saw more than a fair bit of lesyay, and I was... not pleased. Teasing lesbian relationships without following through is bad enough without introducing rape over-tones. Right, Citrus?

I actually read and enjoyed the first volume of the Citrus manga. It's definitely got its fair share of sensual moments, but it also has some legitimately good drama and decent character development. The love interest's status as a stepsister is actually played as a plot point rather than mere fetishism, and at one point legitimately threatens to tear the two apart.

...Which is I why I find it so goddamn baffling that the anime decided to do... that. That shit didn't happen in the manga. Mei didn't hold down her Yuzu's arms as she thrashed around for a full 30 seconds trying to break free. Yes, the first kiss was taken by surprise in the manga, but holy shit Takahashi. You didn't need to turn it into a borderline rape scene. There are those of us who like seeing lesbian relationship that are actually healthy and functional.

Admittedly, I've had it a bit rough, and to a degree, seeing characters like Rei helps me feel a bit less alone in these things. Thankfully, I'm in a better situation now and have people around I can express myself to openly. Not to get TOO personal.

Hey, sorry about the slow response.

While I've had people debate me on this (so far in a pretty civil manner, thankfully) it is very hard for me to believe that K-on!'s homoerotic stuff is accidental. There's just too much of it, and some of it (like that R and J thing you mentioned, or the time Yue straight up tries to kiss Azunyan) is just too blatant to ignore. That was ultimately the thing I found frustrating about K-on!, in spite of its strong characterization: I felt like it kept going, "Look, sweet lesbian romance!" and then winking and going, "Except not really." I don't really dislike the show, but I can't agree with Digibro that it's the best damn thing ever made.

There are indeed a lot of people who ignore half or more of the scale, and I will admit that I've kind of have to train myself to remember that 5 and 6 exist, since my impressions tend to lean towards positive or negative even when a series is a mixed bag. People often forget that, since 5 is average, 6 and above is positive. On the worst end, you get people who will be unhappy or even angry if their favorite anime gets less than a 10 from anyone. I think that reflects a great scale problem, which is the fact that a lot of fans take anime SO SERIOUS
that the moment someone disagrees with one of their opinions, it's taken as an act of heresy. Maybe you saw that "my tastes are superior to yours and I can teach you to have better tastes" thread on the forum that got unsurprisingly deleted not long ago? See, that stuff just makes me facepalm, because as I wrote there before the thread was deleted, quality of anime (or any other art medium, for that matter) is subjective. I have friends who think Cowboy Bebop is the worst anime ever made and friends who thing Rosario + Vampire is brilliant.

I'm around halfway through EVA right now and I'm having a great time with it. I'm also finding myself steadily leaning towards Team Rei is Best Grill, probably because I have a little too much experience with emotional suppression. That, and the last episode I watched had her read the famous poem. Also, here's this:

Oh, and also, I REALLY don't think I'm gonna drop EVA. I usually when something puts me off, it either does it in the first couple of episodes, at which point I drop it, or it does it in the last two episodes, at which point it's too late to pull up and I have no choice but to nose-dive straight into the ground. I'm also aware (like basically everyone) that EVA's ending is... not the real ending, and that I need to watch the movie before I can really judge the series.

Ooooh, Utena and Lain are so great. ^_^

Don't get me wrong, as nuts as I am about CBBB and as ridiculously beloved as it is, I get that not everyone is a huge nut for it. I actually have a friend IRL who thinks Cowboy Bebop is the worst anime ever made. I really need to get him to watch Infinite Stratos...

I will admit that the backgrounds we get on Cowboy Bebop's cast are not extremely thorough. The show does put more spotlight on each individual little adventure than on much overall growth, and this may be one area where CBBB's episode format hampers it a bit. I also get how off-putting it can be to expectations of a show that it does not fulfill. When I watched the first episode of My Hero Academia, I went in expecting Spider-man and got Watchmen Lite instead. I'm also the dumbass who watched K-on! expecting Ritsu and Mio to have an open lesbian relationship by the end of the series... yeah...

Glad to hear you still got some enjoyment out of Cowboy Bebop! A lot of people seem to miss that a 6 is a positive score, lol. I actually had someone launch a personal attack on me a while back because I gave Fist of the North Star a 4... like, that's not even that bad. I didn't hate North Star, I just found it very repetitive and found the characterization lacking overall. That was apparently enough to set off this rando. *eyeroll*

I took a look at your profile and your anime history, and I see that like myself, you are fairly new to anime, though you've watched quit a bit more than I have. I'm currently watching EVA, and I find it very interesting so far.

My personal anime history looks something like this: I watched a lot of Pokemon and Digimon back in elementary school, dabbled in Cardcaptor Sakura and DBZ, got put off by Naruto and Bleach and ultimately decided I had grown out of anime, because I thought that all of anime was kiddie stuff and battle shonen (a genre I have historically despised, though that has been changing lately with the discovery of Hunter x Hunter and, of course, TTGL). I caught some Full Metal Alchemist when I was too young to appreciate it, but for me, the one series that really got me into anime was Cowboy Bebop. That's the series that proved to me that anime didn't HAVE to be stupid. Now a days I watch all kinds of stuff, but I tend to favor stories with psychological depth, which I hear EVA has plenty of.

Oh, hi there! Glad you found my advice helpful. I'm not really surprised that the thread got locked, considering how nasty it was getting in there, but I do try to offer sincere advice when I find someone I think can benefit from it.

I'm a big martial arts nut, so I know a little about fitness. I'm currently training in Judo, and I only started a day ago, but the Sensei did give me some fitness advice ahead of time on how to get in shape.

Uh oh, looks like I've been uprooted....
Heh, yeah that wasn't actually me....I'm not the guy who messgaed you a month ago, check your profile
I thought it might be funny to play along for a bit..

Haha, they're all jokes. The girl who called a thot though was because I forgot to reply to her, so I'm guilty of that at least. But the guy and the parking lot thingy, that was just messing around....

You are excused
