This season and the previous one has had a lot of fantasy series that involved Goblins, like Overlord, Goblin Slayer and That Time I got Reincarnated as a Slime. In games, mainly RPGs (both Western and Eastern) they are usually just some unimportant early-game mobs to be defeated, sometimes as subjugations quests like "bring me 10 Goblin ears as proof that you took them down". It's interesting to see how they are depicted very differently in different anime franchises though. Their general behaviour, their strength and probably most notable, their... reproduction. Overlord didn't really deal with the reproduction issue but we saw that females do exist, but whether the Goblins commit rape against humans is unknown, but they do attack humans. The Goblins here, that exist naturally and aren't summoned beings, seem to live in tribes but details for "normal" Goblins are not shown. Goblin Slayer probably has the most horrible depiction of Goblins - they don't have any females and they rape people to reproduce. Moreover given their intelligence and looks something idealistic like "doing it consentfully" is pretty much impossible, so it's kind of tragic that they are a parasitic existence that has no other choice that to rape to preserve their species from going extinct. The Goblin here seem to mainly live in caves. That Time I got Reincarnated as a Slime depicts the Goblins as much more human-like but still shows them as believers of the "survival of the fittest" concept, as well as the "following the strong" concept, as they were willing to go along with their mortal enemies who killed many of their kin, just because their new leader decided it. The Web Novel version showed that the Goblins normally do attack humans for their equipment though (though to be fair, the humans attack them on-sight as well), but the Goblins here have females and they don't seem to commit rape against the humans they killed either. The Goblin here seem to live in their own villages in the wild. Under certain conditions, the Goblins can upgrade, males to Hobgoblins and females to Goblinas. Another notable example for Goblins, which didn't receive an anime adaptation yet (I hope it will someday though) is a WN/LN/manga series called Re:Monster. It's about a guy in a Sci-Fi world with ESPer powers who dies and gets reincarnated in a RPG-like fantasy world as a...... Goblin. The Goblins in this series seem to be the middle ground of That Time I got reincarnated as a Slime and Goblin Slayer, as they do have females, but the Goblin females have a very low fertility rate, so the Goblins still resort to rape normally and the intelligence of individual Goblins vary from individual to individual. In this series the Goblins can't merely evolve to Hobgoblins, but they have an entire "monster evolution tree" that goes far beyond that, so as time passes most of the cast "grow out" of being mere Goblins or Hobgoblins. The Goblins here normally live in caves as well. So what do you think? Which depiction of Goblins do you like the most? Which do you hate the most? What's your personal idea of what Goblins should look like if you could decide? Discuss! |

idk, I haven't seen goblin slayer or the slime one yet. But I do like a focus on non-human races in fantasy. Read a lot of fantasy novels like that in the past, albeit I don't think Goblins were at the center of any of them. Just Orcs, dragons, elves, dwarfs, vampires and so on. But I loved the lizard men in Overlord so I'm definitely up for more arcs or series with a focus like that. Tomoya1 said: zal said: lol did heπππ?Tomoya1 said: ....... There is no defined standard for goblin behavioral and reproductive characteristics as they don't fucking exist. Every anime portrays them differently and that's fine. |

You guys don't seem to be aware, but do you know what a discussion about Tensei Slime looked like for episodes 2 escpacially (which aired two days after Goblin Slayer episode 1)? 90% of the comments in the Tensei Slime episode 2 discussion thread (and the one in reddit and other places as well) were just comparisons to Goblin Slayer! Like what the hell? Just because both had Goblins in them? That led me to a conclusion: Appearently people are really interested in Goblins and the "gap" of how they are portrayed in different series. So if people who did that now tell me they don't want to discuss it, I'll take it as them being liars. Also this thread is now a "vent". There's no longer any excuse to dicuss Goblin Slayer in the Slime threads! I mean I was just joking when I said "people will be confused what to think of Goblins this Fall" before the Fall season started! I didn't expect people to ACTUALLY think like that! |

-Overlord's Goblins should be portrayed in 2D, not in awful Berserk-tier CGI, that's why Enri's Goblin squad is the best, the're hand-drawn and complete bros. Also great wingmen. -Slime anime Goblins look nice, but I kinda prefered them when they were average Goblins, their transition to weak and small creatures to JoJo sized bodybuilders was a bit awkward. Gobta is best boi too. -In Goblin Slayer, the only good Goblins are the ones who never come out of their stinking holes. |

You should write a Thesis about Goblins in Media. I think you could do it. OT: I think the most realistic Representation is the Goblin Slayer One. Honestly I think that they would just kill and Rape on instinct being more monster or Animal than Human. People would think they are just pest and thy would start killing them or, if it was in modern days, they would start capuring them and doing experiments on them to see how different they are from humans. |

How can a product of pure fantasy have a 'most realistic representation' tho? They are however they are written. They can be borderline animals or just a very foreign kind of civilization. You can compare the depictions, but realism is not an applicable criteria here since there is nof rame of reference in actual reality. |

Goblins are one of the species of foes that can be found inhabiting not only Gransys, but every corner of the world. Their physical frames are quite similar to those of humans in structure, but even at full height it is rare for a goblin to reach five feet. Consequently, goblins cannot match the fearsome abilities of most other beasts and an individual goblin possessing some sort of weapon is only about as powerful in battle as an unremarkable human. They possess about as much intelligence as a small child and are able to use rudimentary tools and weapons. Goblins appear to communicate with one another in their own particular language and some can even use a smattering of human speech. Goblins usually form revels of five to ten individuals, commanded by a single leader. Strength in numbers is considered to be the goblin’s greatest weapon. Goblins will also take human weapons and armor, mostly plundered from their fallen victims, and don them in their own fashion. Their looks may be laughable in the eyes of men, but the goblins seem to think that they look very fine in their outlandish outfits. Goblins are able to take advantage of other creatures, thanks to their rather human-like intelligence. They have been known to set loose cyclopes, which they somehow are able to enslave, upon their human enemies. |
