Nowadays, I usually end up giving out at least 1 masterpiece rating per year maybe a max of 5 out of around 80-100 titles I watch each year in a good year. 2016 had 3 (Erased, Orange, Planetarian). 2017 has zilch so far, I'm really hoping the summer and fall seasons will fix that. They are rare. |

I don't think masterpiece is the correct word here. It has more to do with cultural significance. And it's not that these shows are considered masterpieces by all. Your Name, FMA:B, and Death Note all have their detractors (some more than others). Given enough time, yes, I do think there will be a show to match or surpass these ones, but I have no idea what it would be or when it would release. |

That question is hard to answer, since it depends on what you consider a masterpiece. As far as history goes, the year a boom occurs masterpiece quality anime come in droves. As far as scoring goes, there's at least 1 or 2 in a two year span. To receive a 10 from me a show must receive a 9.6 average score, must deliver on my expectations near perfectly and have no big plot or story flaws, or it must be thought-provoking, emotion-provoking, and entertaining to the highest degree. If an anime can accomplish any of these three things, I will have no qualms giving it a 10. |

You'll get another masterpiece when you stop circlejerking MAL's scores and start watching shows without giving a shit about their score. I'm not trying to be an elitist here, but it's called judging based on what you think, not on what the community thinks. A show might be highly rated because it appeals to the general community, like how Your Name was in cinemas and is probably some people's first taste in anime (gonna make a MAL account and rate it a 10) and like how Deathnote's premise is very different to a normal shounen & is probably the first of its kind. Even a show like Gintama (which I'm a huge fan of) has a rabid fanbase who will rate every season it gets a 10, oblivious to drops in quality. However, saying that they are all masterpieces makes me want to question whether you have actually seen and analysed these shows... or just have an unconscious set mindset of rating everything highly rated on MAL high for the sake of conformation. tl;dr mal's rating system has flaws, so don't call stuff masterpieces just because of their high rating and reviews. |

It is about "servicing" the fan[6] – giving the fans "exactly what they want." which i find funny how most people who hate "fanservice" like other forms of it, back to your post, (ignoring my score thing cause i copy pasted from elsewhere) " many are just getting fed up with the harem/fanservice shows that come out every season. " this implies that many harem/fanservice shows must come out, unless somehow someone can get sick of again 1/2 harem/fanservice shows that come out, in which case that is no one's fault but their own, i proved that no, those people are idiots, who somehow think that 3-5 harem/fanservice (man this term really shouldnt be use with harem) is not alot. |

Your Name isn't even a year old yet, and there are still plenty of highly regarded anime coming out, the most recent of which are likely Rakugo and 3-gatsu. And if you're looking at more than the very creme de la creme of critical reception, there's a lot more really good titles that have come out recently. So when people act like the medium's level of writing quality is stagnating I can't help but respond with a resounding "What?" |

In the near future? Yeah. Anime is still a fairly new medium compared to many others. Look at books: people have been writing books for thousands of years, but there are only a handful considered to be true masterpieces. |

I see a good series coming out when a writer embraces quality to sell copies instead of relying on tropes that are proven to work. It's like a metagame almost. They're what make pvp stale in many games, like competitive pokemon. Shows that are written well and have that one thing that lets them stick out. A tropey show can be good. I'm not saying it can't, but nobody will see it as a masterpiece or nearly one because they're fucking bored. Can't tell you how many shows seem almost the goddamn same to me. I'll give an example imo. MHA is full of shonen tropes, but what makes it different in my eyes is its mastery of my feels in many less episodes than series have had in hundreds over me. That's why I keep coming back. |

I highly doubt there will ever be a 10/10 by the majority (it's possible but the show would have to be of another cloth) Of course there will never be an anime that has a perfect ten, or anywhere near it. It's the same reason why an anime will never have a one. The ratings are based on people's opinons--that's why I'm being lenient on what's considered a masterpiece in general. If a show is well received and is in the top 25 or so, I'll just say its the best of the best. To clarify, if when you asked the original question you meant something like a god-tier masterpiece anime, I'm sure something like that never has and never will exist. Even anime like FMA and Steins Gate have their audiences, and their flaws. Someday? No. Anime is a medium I believe to have a lot of potential. In the end, it only takes one studio and one story. In the near future? Yeah. Anime is still a fairly new medium compared to many others. Look at books: people have been writing books for thousands of years, but there are only a handful considered to be true masterpieces. AniMatt17 said: i like your point. Unfortunately, the answer is never. The quality of anime started declining rapidly after School Days (2007) finished airing. The fact that it has a below 7 rating on here is testament enough that true masterpieces will never get the recognition they deserve. Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu IS a modern day masterpiece btw |

" this implies that many harem/fanservice shows must come out, unless somehow someone can get sick of again 1/2 harem/fanservice shows that come out, in which case that is no one's fault but their own, i proved that no, those people are idiots, who somehow think that 3-5 harem/fanservice (man this term really shouldnt be use with harem) is not alot. no, it doesn't imply that many must come out, just enough for it to gather enough attention for a good number of people to complain. whose fault it is isn't the subject of discussion here. the only thing being discussed here is the speculation that mal considers anything not harem/fan service a masterpiece, which i wasn't even aware was the case, but i pointed out why it might be. i've already said that if your only judgment of a show being a masterpiece is based on the fact that it's not harem, not fan service, and has adult characters, then that's some pretty low standards. also, by fan service i meant anything sexual meant to please fans rather than contribute to story/plot/mood etc. it can of course refer to other things, but that's generally not the most typical use of the word |

When a series gets an 10/10 (even though I'll give it a 9/10 again) that's going to be a masterpiece. |
