CRITICS AND CONNOISSEURS CLUB FAQ 1. Entry Requirements Q: What are the entry requirements of this club? 1. The 'Completed' section of either your Anime or Manga list contains at least 100 rated entries. 2. The 'Completed' sections of your Anime and Manga lists each may not contain more than 10% of entries awarded a perfect rating of 10. In most cases this will prove that you are able to rise above the hype and will not give a rating of 10 to any show just because it is popular. 3. The 'Completed' sections of your Anime and Manga lists each may not contain more than 5% of entries not awarded any sort of rating for TV and Movies. 4. The 'Completed' sections of your Anime and Manga lists each may not contain more than 49% of entries rated 8 or higher. 5. The 'Completed' sections of your Anime and Manga lists each can not have a 'mean score' of 7.0 or over. 6. Your Anime and Manga lists must be publicly visible. If you meet all of these requirements and wish to join, but have yet to receive and invitation then feel free to send request. One of the club officers or admins will then review your profile. After reviewing it they will either accept you on the spot or send you a PM explaining the specific reason(s) why your request was declined. 2. Welcome to the club Q: I just joined this club...now what? The purpose of this club is to have members nominate anime and manga that they believe are of particularly high quality and that deserve to be added to our 'Club Related' list. Each week 1 anime and 1 manga are randomly selected from those nominated to be Spotlighted as the topics of discussion. Members then are encouraged to debate the good and negative aspects of the chosen series. After a week of being Spotlighted, we then hold a poll to decide if the nomination deserves to be added to our 'Club Related' list. If a series is inducted into our 'Club Related' list, then we go one step further and create a small committee of volunteers to write a review for it. Once completed, the review will be posted on the series' page under this account: TheCriticsClub 3. Activity Policy 3.1 - Q: How active do I need to be in this club? We measure member activity with participation in the You Decide polls. You must vote in at least 1 You Decide poll each month. Each week has 3 You Decide polls and voting in even one of them is enough to be counted as activity. If you do not meet this requirement, you will be kicked for inactivity. 3.2 - Q: What do I do if I know that I won't be able to come online for some amount of time? If you know ahead of time that you won't be online, just message TruePein (or any other admin if he's unavailable) and your absence will be excused whether it be a single weekend or an extended vacation. 3.3 - Q: If I am kicked for inactivity, can I get back in the club? Yes, we have an open door policy and anyone requesting to join (who meet the requirements) will be allowed. However, if you are kicked twice for inactivity, you will be removed from the club permanently. The activity policy really isn't that strict and if you know you won't be around during a weekend for vacation or something then you can simply let us know and we won't count it against your activity. There really isn't much of an excuse for getting booted for inactivity twice. 4. Illegitimate Voting Policy 4.1 - Q: Can I vote 'yes' or 'no' for something that isn't on my anime/manga list? No. I understand that your list might be a work in progress and or you might just be lazy and don't care to keep it up to date...But you can only vote in a You Decide poll if you have the series included in your list. This is how we ensure people are being honest with their voting. 4.2 - Q: How much of a series must I see or read before I can vote 'yes' or 'no'? The minimum episodes seen or chapters read depends on the length of the anime or manga being voted on: Anime: 100% for anything 1-3 episodes (this includes movies and ovas) 50% for a series 4-6 episodes 33% for a series 7-12 episodes 25% for a series 13-49 episodes 20% for a series 50 episodes or more Manga: 100% for a series 1-10 chapters 50% for a series 11-20 chapters 33% for a series 21-49 chapters 25% for a series 50-99 chapters 20% for a series 100 chapters or more Rounding: Always round up. For example: 20% of a 51-episode anime comes out to 10.2 This will round up to 11 episodes. 4.3 - Q: Need my lists be publicly visible for my vote to be legitimate? Yes. Everyone giving a 'yes', 'no', or 'abstain' vote will have their lists checked by an admin to make sure that you have actually voted for something you are allowed to vote for. This means that the admins must be able to have access to your lists. 4.4 - Q: Will I get in trouble for making illegitimate votes? No. Your post in the You Decide poll will simply be deleted. 4.5 - Q: Can I vote 'yes' or 'no' for an anime I haven't seen if I have read the manga? Or can I vote for a manga I haven't read if I've seen the anime? No. There are very very few anime that are 100% faithful to the manga. Really, it is more likely to find an anime that completely changes the storyline. Because of this, you cannot vote on something based on a separate adaptation you have seen or read. 5. The Nomination Process 5.1 - Q: How do nominations work? 1. Every three weeks you have three votes in each of the nomination threads which you can distribute however you want. You can nominate the same Anime/Manga multiple times in one nomination period. Feel free to even nominate the same series multiple nomination periods in a row if you want. 2. A series can only receive 15 total nominations each nomination period. If a series has already received 15 nominations this nomination period, then you should nominate something else. 3. Nominations will roll over to following nomination periods. The more nominations a series accumulates, the higher chance it has to be selected for Spotlight. 5.2 - Q: Are there rules for what can be nominated? Yes. Anime Requirements: 1. The anime must be completed before it can be nominated. 2. The anime must be fully fansubbed in English according to AniDB Manga Requirements: 1. Ongoing manga may be nominated provided that 10 volumes have been published and they are available to read online in English. 2. The manga must be fully scanlated in English according to Mangaupdates Additionally, you can only nominate something you would be allowed to vote on, as per the How much of a series must I see or read before I can vote 'yes' or 'no'? section above. 5.3 - Q: How can I find the number of nominations a series has so far? The first post in the nomination threads contains a Master List of all the series and their nominations. This post also contains all nomination rules. 5.4 - Q: How do rollover nominations work? Any series that goes unchosen will have the previous nomination periods nominations roll over to the next one. Let's say Bartender has accumulated 8 votes and then has received 2 more this period. The entry will look like this: Bartender (8:2) If Bartender is not chosen as the spotlight, then it will remain on the nomination list next period. The nominations it received this period would then roll over and become part of the accumulated total so the entry would become: Bartender (10:0) 5.5 - Q: I want to change my nomination for the nomination period and the Master List has NOT been updated yet to include my nomination. What can I do? At this point, you can feel free to change your nomination by editing your post 5.6 - Q: I want to change my nomination for the nomination period and the Master List HAS already been updated to include my nomination. What can I do? At this point your nomination for the nomination period is set in stone and cannot be changed. If you attempt to modify your own post to nominate something else it will just be ignored. PLEASE don't delete your own post after it has been included in the Master List, this will throw off our count of how many nominations there should be compared to the total number of posts. 5.7 - Q: What happens if I nominated a series that already reached the 15 nomination maximum? Your post and nomination will be deleted by the admin who is updating the Master List. That admin will then send you a private message letting your know what happened. You can then come back at any time and make a new post with a different nomination. 6. The Spotlight Process 6.1 - Q: How are nominations chosen to become Spotlight topics? Nominations are selected to become spotlighted through a simple raffling system that uses a random number generator. Every three weeks, only the ten nominations with the highest number of votes apply. Basically, picture each of these ten nominations being written on a slip of paper and being put into a hat. The Spotlight is chosen by pulling a paper out of the hat. The more nominations a series has, the more papers it has in the hat, and the higher the chance it has of being drawn. 6.2 - Q: The week's Spotlights have been chosen..now what? A new Spotlight thread will be created for each of that week’s chosen entries. Each thread will have a poll for you to give a rating from 1-10 (or ‘not familiar with this’). After voting on a score, the main purpose of a Spotlight thread is to promote discussion. You can create a structured review explaining your thoughts on certain aspects of the series or you can also simply write an unstructured post highlighting some of your favourite or least favourite things. You can also feel free to respond to other people’s posts or just engage in general chit-chat with the Spotlighted title being the theme of the discussion. 6.3 - Q: Am I required to vote or post in the Spotlight thread? You don’t HAVE to do anything with the Spotlight threads if you don’t want to..and many people might not have the time to engage in lengthy discussions. But it is encouraged that you take a moment to vote for a score and also read some of the discussion as it might be interesting to hear what other fans have to say. 7. The 'You Decide' Polling Process 7.1 - Q: How do the 'You Decide' polls work? After a series has been Spotlighted for three weeks, it is time to vote on whether to add it to the “Club Relations” list. You Decide polls are created sometime Sunday evening GMT and remain open for voting until three weeks later on Sunday morning GMT. All you need to do in the thread is post your vote in the form of 'yes', 'no', 'abstained' or 'I haven’t seen this anime/ I haven’t read this manga. 7.2 Before voting 'yes' or 'no' please make sure: 1) The series is currently in your list: -if voting on an anime, make sure it is included in your anime list; -if voting on a manga, make sure it is included in your manga list; 2) That you have seen or read enough of the series to legitimately vote. 3) That your lists are publicly visible. 7.3 - Q: I'm not familiar with the series being voted on. Do I still need to vote? Yes, if you aren’t familiar with the series in the You Decide poll, you should still make a vote saying you aren’t familiar with them. This allows us to see that you are active in the club and will prevent you from being kicked for inactivity. 7.4 - Q: I am familiar with the series being voted on, but I 'm undecided as to whether I should vote 'yes' or 'no'. Now what? In such a case, you can abstain from voting by picking the 'abstained' option. 7.5 - Q: What is the difference between abstaining and saying 'I don't know this anime/manga'? Abstaining means that you would have been able to vote but have chosen not do so. In order to abstain, you will have to meet all the requirements necessary for voting 'yes' or 'no', or your vote will be ineligible. Abstainments do count towards the requirement for a member to vote in the polls but do not influence whether a spotlighted series gets inducted. 7.6 - Q: Are inductions to the 'Club Relations' lists permanent? No. However, they will stay on the list as long as they remain unchallenged. See question below. 7.7 - Q: I don't think that an anime/manga is good enough to be inducted. How can it be removed from the relations list? Once every three months, there will be a challenge thread posted, where you can nominate an anime and manga to be re-voted on with a view to removing it from the relations list. However, there won't be any challenge spotlight until a certain number of challenge nominations has been reached. this number is 20 for anime and 15 for manga. Newly inducted titles may only be challenged one year after induction. 7.8 - Q: How many votes does it take for a series to be inducted into the 'Club Relations' list? Anime: 70% standard with 20 minimum yes votes Manga: 70% standard with 15 minimum yes votes 7.9 - Q: What happens when a series manages to satisfy the 70% standard but does not manage to obtain enough yes votes? In that case the work is neither inducted nor shot down. It will simply be available for nomination again and can be spotlighted once more. These works are denoted by a N in the Old Spotlights lists. 7.9.1 - Q: Challenge Re-vote? What's that? When an anime/manga passes the 20/15 nomination mark on the challenge nomination thread, there will be a re-vote on it. If a series fails to make the 70% mark in the re-vote, it will be removed from the relations list and be barred from resurrection for a year. 7.9.2 - Q: My favourite show was shot down. Can it ever be nominated again and possibly get another Spotlight? Yes. every week, we run a special Resurrection Poll which will allow you to nominate one of the rejected Spotlights to get another chance. One entry will be selected to get a re-vote. The series resurrected for every three weeks will be rotated between anime and manga. There is no period of ineligibility after a series fails initial induction before it can be nominated for resurrection. 8. The Resurrection Polling Process 8.1 - Q: What series are available for resurrection? Any anime or manga that has been shot down in a previous You Decide poll will be available to resurrect. We decide which series to resurrect with a nomination process whereby everyone is allowed to vote for one available anime or manga and the winner is decided by simple majority. Nominations will roll over to the next anime or manga resurrection nomination thread. There is no cap for the number of nominations an anime or a manga can receive each poll. 8.2 - Q: What happens if a resurrected series is shot down a 2nd time? The series will be barred from being resurrected again for one year. Once the year is over, you can start resurrecting that series again. The same applies to all future deaths the resurrected series may have. 9. The Reviewing Process 9.1 - Q: What will receive a review by this club? Anime and manga that have been inducted into their respective Club Relations lists at any point are eligible for a Critics and Connoisseurs review, including those which have subsequently died. 9.2 - Q: A series was just inducted into the 'Club Relations' list...now what? Ideally, a Review Team of 3-4 volunteers will be created to write a review for the series. After the review is completed, it will be posted under our club’s account TheCriticsClub 9.3 - Q: I would like to join a Review Team. Where do I sign up? We have a forum thread called Pending Club Reviews. This thread lists all of the series that need reviewed and the number of openings remaining for their Review Team. If you want to volunteer for a team, simply post your interest in this thread. Extra Questions 9.4 - Q: I just joined the club. Where can I find a list of all the series that have already been Spotlighted? This thread on the club forum lists all the anime, manga, and characters previously spotlighted as well as the results of their polls. 9.5 - Q: Where can I keep track of when barred anime/manga can be nominated for resurrection? This thread keeps track of all currently-barred anime and the dates when they become eligible for resurrection. 9.6 - Q: Can I ask questions about this club and its policies or offer suggestions on how to improve this club? Sure. Any questions, comments or suggestions can be placed in the Open Discussion and Ideas for Club Improvement threads. 9.7 - Q: Are there any rules on member behaviour? We expect all members to conduct themselves civilly and politely and not make personal attacks or flame. If you feel for some reason offended or threatened by personal attacks or flaming from a club member, then you should bring this up with an admin. Together, the club admins will decide whether this member has crossed a line and will provide a measure that will hopefully prevent any repeat offences. After one offence, the offender will receive a warning. Repeat offenders may be banned from the club for a period of time. 9.8 - Q: This club is great. Can my friends join it too? We have a forum thread called Help Us Grow. If you have friends who would be interested in joining the club, post their names here. But first make sure they meet the Club Requirements. This thread post is a work in progress. So please forward and questions you have to this thread and we will do our best to answer them. |

Can we change our nomination when we already nominated a series, in the running week. In example, I want to change my anime nomination to another nomination at this week. And when it reached 5 nomination, it means that another member can't nominate the anime again? how if they didn't read it and nominate again anyway, will their count dropped or what action u will take? |

While I would like to, I am too afraid that we won't have enough material to directly compare them too. How many members have read more than a handful of light novels? I know that I LOVE the FMP novel series, however it's the only Japanese light novel series I have ever read, so how can I in good conscience declare that it is something that in the upper echelons of it's medium. Should we compare them to American novel series? I mean sure I could compare them to some of my favorite Michael Crichton or John Grisham novels, but that's not really fair. |

Does this club frown on adding the same title to both manga and anime relations? For example, I've noticed a couple votes for Hajime no Ippo in the manga nomination. While the anime only covers the first 30% or so of the manga, I consider it one of the best anime's out there. Figured I should ask otherwise some votes in one or the other nomination thread could go out the window lol. |

yes, because we treat the manga and anime as completely separate entities. The Full Metal Alchemist anime is very very different from the original manga after covering the first 15 chapters. And while the Hajime no Ippo anime is almost taken verbatim from the manga, we will still follow the same rule of separation. |

Hey, I just wanted to ask what I would vote for an anime that I have on-hold. Would that be counted as "I have not seen this anime" for the "You Decide" poll? For example, I've only seen a few episodes of Mushishi, but have a good idea of what it's about and the quality of it. |

I really leave that up to the individual, If you you feel you've watched enough of something to give it a fair judgment one way or the other then that is your choice. However I think that most of us will agree that fair opinions that carry actual weight can only be given after watching/reading most of an anime/manga. For example, If I was to base my vote for Death Note off of just the first half of the series then I'd probably give it a resounding "Yes", but after watching the show all the way to the end I've changed my opinion completely and would have to give it a "No". |

Okay, thanks. I think it's still too early for me to vote yes even though the first 3 episodes blew me away. I would have to completely agree with you for the Death Note example. Thanks again. |

Since the character relations and polls do not exist anymore all questions and answers pertaining to them should be updated (or removed if they solely addressed these). |

I'm confused about the HunterxHunter spotlight. going on in a couple weeks. It seems to contradict the rules listed here... Specifically: "1. The manga must be completed before it can be nominated." I'm not opposed to the rule change, I'd just like a bit of clarification on what the new rule is... |

I have a question. I want to nominate Death Note (the manga) next week, but it isn't in the Nomination Master List AND has a red N in the Old Spotlights List. So it was rejected. But it's not barred, I checked it. Then what? Can I try to lift it up again? I got confused. |

I'm sure the question has already been answered, but I can't find it so I'll ask (again): can you nominate a manhwa or a webtoon ? |

Voting Policy Question: I looked around before asking this sorry if I missed it. Does "Abstained" mean I chose not to vote or I chose not to watch/read this series? |

Given that this is a club comprised of anime critics, why not host a thread for some of us to post reviews in? Not like the reviews done by a committee for an anime in the relations list, more like a section for us to list our previous reviews and any reviews we do in the future? |
Being wrong is just an occupational hazard. Follow me on twitter. I have an anitube channel so feel free to check it out and subscribe if you like what you see. |
