I wasn't sure how I felt about this episode at first. It seemed like a retread of the original OVA, even copying some scenes with minor variations. The addition of the teacher being a moe klutz, and Shiny Chariot having her own trading card game added very little. Still I get they need to reintroduce plot points, to make the series its own cohesive thing. And they did make cool small changes like the hair clover. The conclusion of the episode completely won me over. It was a nice little scene, that was really well animated and genuinely tapped into a whimsical sort of awe. Even if it copied a lot of the same beats of the original OVAs ending. I also like that Akko being the chosen one or whatever this is, is being kept secret from the other witches in the series. And I'm curious to see how this affects Diana's behavior in later episodes.

Everything about this anime so far has been magical!

The art, the story, the music.. the background music is especially majestic. This could easily be AOTY if it keeps up like this.

what story? so far we know that harriet potter's childhood hero disappeared at some point and there's been no real character development or overall story told apart from that...I wasn't expecting to be enthralled in the story after only 2 episodes of a 25-episode anime anyway though, so yeah...the art style is really nice, apart from the way they caricature the characters any time they emote practically anything...that bit makes me feel like i'm watching a saturday-morning cartoon more than an anime

How come we don't have next episode previews? Does it have something to Netflix. I want to have next episode previews, get me excited.

I wonder how long till we meet Amanda, Constanze, and Jasminka. I wonder if Akko is still going to meet them via detention.

What an awesome experience! So far I'm really enjoying this series. I have no knowledge of the movies so I'm pretty much going into this series blind! Thus far it's been great. I was really drawn to the artsyle and how the characters looked much different from the usual suspects in anime. A fun ride and I can't wait to see what's in store!

Okay, I loved the butterfly scene. This show reminds me a bit of Mahou Shoujo Arisu (and I have a feeling it will go down a similar plot?). Main characters equally annoying.

I like Diana. Her lackeys not so much.

The thing that gets me the most excited about this series is the fact that it will be 25 episodes long! I watched both movies, which were amazingly animated and had the most charming aesthetic and art direction, and I can't help but get excited for the world building in this series.

I was thinking to myself while watching this episode that I wish this series could just be Akko, Lotte, and Sucy sitting in class learning about magic. In extension, I wish I could be in there learning about Magic Linguistics and the sort. Magic Linguistics sounds SO interesting! Where do these words come from? How do you say them properly? Does this world use IPA to learn the "language", and if so, how is it different from our IPA?

The world the staff has built so far is amazing, I just hope we can see it in action over these 25 episodes. Adventure is fun, but I'm worried that we'll just be seeing a bunch of creatures or concepts that will never be expanded on or met ever again.

I should try to lower my standards.. (^-^;)

Loved this episode. This show is so damn good.

Animation is on point and I just love these characters so much.

The new characters introduced this episode were pretty cool. Seeing this characters develop over the next several episodes is going to be awesome.

Best news of all is that this show is going to be 25 episodes.

I'm actually speechless, it's only the 2nd episode and i am already loving it. One of the best animes of this season!!!
Akko is so funny to watch but she is also a great girl.
It seems that Akko's magic stick can only be activated with magic words but since Akko doesn't know them, she can't activate it... But it seems that Ursula may know a few things about her magic stick, or even why Chariot disappeared...or maybe she is the legendary Chariot? xD Who knows ;)
Oh yes...Diana is a typical schoolgirl with delusions of grandeur but after this episode, she will change (which is great). But her 2 friends "dogs" probably won't xD
Can't wait for next episode!!!

A solid second episode! I'm pretty sure Sucy is my favorite character thus far (emo goofball ftw), but Diana is also pretty intriguing. I really like the scene where she enchants the statue and uses it not only to show off but also to remove the sapling from Akko's head, which speaks volumes about what kind of person she is. Diana feels very much like a combination of Draco and Hermione (which might sound awful on paper, but actually makes her more interesting than either of those were in HP1). But we already knew that much from the movies, and it's obvious that Diana's rivalry with Akko will probably turn into a subtle friendship over the course of the series, which I am fine with.

I just hope that this series won't focus too much on big action set pieces and escalating plot twists in the vein of Kill la Kill (which is why it's a good thing that Prof. Ursula's true nature is revealed to the viewer early on). I fear this could still turn into a "use-random-magic-to-defeat-the-monster-of-the-week" type of thing, which I don't really want to see. The fights vs. the dragon/giant from the two movies were my least favorite aspect of them, and I was constantly reminded of Kiki's Delivery Service and how it handles its dramatic conclusion in a much more refined manner. All I want this series to do is to maintain its lovely atmosphere, focus on interesting character chemistry and subtle character growth, and keep its worldbuilding and overall plot on the less thunderous side of things.

Uuh.. the story of the first and 2nd episode? what you're talking about is the overarching plot which we won't really see until a few more episodes. So far I simply liked the first two episodes even if the story is somewhat simple. Very often simplicity is the hardest thing to do, especially with plenty of anime trying to be edgy only to end up being a pile of meh in the end

episode 2 was literally like 20 minutes of filler and 2 minutes of minor exposition...when someone says "the story," especially when referencing an entire show, not just one episode, they are almost always referring to the overall story, not some episodic fluff...

Slice of life series doesn't necessarily have to have a story to be interesting to watch. Of course, it's not to everyone's taste.

It's fairly often to see threats that are solved in the span of one episode in most mahou shoujos.
It's easy to notice how the first segments of both episodes have been paced slowlier than the movies, but both have had their frenetic shifts anyway.

So far it contributes very scarcely to the franchise as a whole and barely goes against the conventionalisms of the genre. Of course the retelling was necessary to some extent so the few following episodes can easily prove me wrong, but there's no foreshadowing for a lot of things to happen. If anything, the most disconcerting thing is that it will last for 25 episodes. Which, being an alien aspect to the show by itself, leaves an slightly underwhelming impression.

This is too cute!

I like that Diana is not acting like a high-born "bitch", but just wants to be a good witch. She even tried to explain that its wasnt her alone, but realised they would not believe her anyway.

The characters in this anime are just awesome.

How much more boring can it get? I had high hopes for this series, but it's as cliché as a fish out of water story can get. Except we have two fishes, because both our protagonist AND her idol/teacher are the same exact optimistic-and-talented-but-unappreciated character. They'd better start making these characters into more than old tired tropes soon, because it's really boring to watch Harry Potter with anime girls - and no Dumbledore or Voldemort or Snape or anything interesting like that. At least they remembered to have a high-and-mighty bully from a renowed family + mindless sidekicks. That's always fun to see, right?

This was a really solid, heartwarming episode. That butterfly scene with the panoramas around Luna Nova were superb, and the statue coming to life was great too. I hope they can continue building/keep up the momentum story and art-wise for 25 eps... I can see how things could go awry but I'm staying optimistic, chars and premise are too good not to be.

Also, loving those "slice of life"-esque illustrations in the ED! Both op and ed are very solid pieces.

Seriously, the fact that this is absolutely Harry Potter in anime form makes this stand out from everything instantly. Great stuff.

Though in harry potter even the prof. snape would give harry credit if he did something right (rare of course lol) while he blamed him for everything else. - Where as here even the head master didnt even attempt to hear the actual explanation or even search for it. Don't get me wrong I love LWA movies and the TV anime so far just hope we get a full flushed out plot id like to see both 'paths' acknowledged and Diana and Akko side by side ;p the truth of SC will come out I hope o/ since we mostly all have it guessed or so we think.

And I am calling it now, the cards that Akko collected, she mentioned a missing card, I am calling it Diana has the missing card being the closet Cherrett fan that she is, yeah spoiler alert, but that was revealed in the first episode, if you don't notice those little details tough. I think that card will come into play to save the day in episode 12 or 13. You will see.

Interesting idea. That would be cool, but I was thinking that it would be Chariot herself that has the card and that would coincide with Akko's realization that Ursula is Chariot.

-Something tells me that something happened to Shiny Chariot
-Akko's Engrish is super cute
-Seems like they have imp servants at Luna Nova
-The presumable rival gets revealed
-Sucy's enthrallment during the potion-making lecture was pretty great
-Nice touch to have a leaf fall from Akko's plant ahoge when she failed the spell on the statue
-Diana with the fadeaway hair flips
-The BGM during the end of the episode was pretty amazing prior to the flight of the Papilliodyas
-Diana's humility at the end earned a bunch of respect from me
-The ED is super relaxing

Diana seemed like the typical rival at the start of the episode, but not so much at the end of the episode, which I'm pretty glad about. Also, Professor Ursula seems to be sort of an outcast among the instructors like Akko seems to be an outcast among the students. Those were pretty much it for new characters, and once again the soundtrack served to set the mood really well. In particular, it helped set up Diana's background with a more pompous mood, and it contributed to making the flight of the Papilliodya much more wondrous and awe-inspiring. This show has a pretty impressive soundtrack despite the subject matter having nothing to do with music. Other than the new character introductions and the scene at the end, the episode was pretty much standard slice of life fare that served to build the setting more, so the episode was just slightly above average if taken as standalone. The setup in this episode might pay off in future episodes, though.
