The movie would be more enjoyable for me if the whole "dream" thing was done better. I mean, I just don't find how some of that stuff happened. Why didn't they try to phone each other before? Sending live messages? Why only putting your "resume" of the day on a text notes? Obviously they only tried to call each other when "shit happened". And we have one or two parts where the characters suddenly wake up from the "dream"... abruptely. For me it seems there wasn't much effort to make this "change" thing believable. Another HUGE problem was the lack of romance. Where did this love thing come from? Like one person above said, the whole "romance" feeling they have is from that short montage where they show some kind of interaction between them. After that, their "love" is treated like a common place, something obvious (which is not by the lack of real, engaging romance between them). What I mean, then, is that the anime fails at the two most important aspects it has. There are some redeeming qualities (like music, art, VAs etc.), but overall it lacks what really is important for a movie that tries to convey this certain idea. 5/10.

This flick was OK. The only top tier in this film are the visuals and character designs. Dont get me started on its """"story"""""

Why the heck no one notices that miki probably ended up with taki's four-eyed friend(they both had engagement rings),I really liked her character and she deserve better :(

Lol, I noticed that too. xD
Well I'd like to think that she married a different man and Tsukasa probably married someone else. :3

I saw it as coming from them living each other's lives, thus feeling a somewhat strong connection with each other, especially from Taki (who's the one who communicated love in the first place), as he discovered that the person whose life he had been living and who he had felt connected to perished in the impact. And let's not forget the theme of 'musubi,' along with the red string imagery. They were connected on such a level that love was inevitable. Definitely not the most typical brand of romance.

Sigh, people who rate this movie 10/10 or 1/10 based on a lower quality camrip, really pisses me off. Shinkai's stories all have the simple skeleton, which hasnt changed much throughout the years, so basing the rating of his movie only on plot and "imagining" the backgroud details is really stupid. Those who love Shinkai(including me) are mainly because of the atmosphere he creates via his animation and how he presents the "feels" through the sights and sounds, thats his USP, not the story. From what I gather here the story has a sort of fairy tale feel to it with "miracles" happening from the PoV of teenagers(tbh the boob press thingy doesnt seem too far fetched for me, like if I were a teenager I would probably have done the same, though I really am not aware fully of the context). So I am not too concerned about "why this thing happened? it makes no logical sense". Fairy Tales are supposed to transcend logic and transport the viewer to a happy dreamlike world, so I am okay with that. Just hope it doesnt try to "explain itself" and then make a mess.

What I am worried about is the ending. Did he lose his biggest strength in the story by giving it a happy end? 5cmps is my favourite anime movie of all time and it was because of how he ended it. The worry is did he go too much "and they lived happily ever after" and lost the feel? Well I will have to wait a few months it seems.

Really good romance-supernatural movie! Love it! But I still don't understand the time setting because this is my weak points : Time travel. I hope I get good explanation.

So Mitsuha and Taki are in different timeline?

Mitsuha in 3 years ago and Taki from 3 years later? So the reason for their swtiching place is because to prevent the disaster?

Some people hate, some love it... I haven't watched 5cmps, wanted to, but I heard it was a tear-jerk so I didn't wanna feel depressed for days. But this movie, made me excited, mad, frustrated, well it was a roller coaster of emotion! Thing is, I just loved the main characters xD I ain't no critic(double negative)

Usually Makoto Shinkai's films leave me feeling empty along with every other emotion in the book but after all the tears I won't have that aching pit in my stomach for weeks. Absolutely beautiful. Can't wait for the funimation one to hit theaters and the blu ray. 10/10

Hated the fact that after such relationship development between the two, they go back to "Hello, have we met before?'' at the end. But still they at least recognised each other unlike 5cmps sooo still rather happy :) Wish they had deeper character development though but maybe if they did that the whole world would cry :p

So when a Anime(Movie) have highest Rating
Haters will appear quickly, and make opinion from their base only, no one Right expect me and another haters and "WE MUST BRING PEOPLE TO TAKE DOWN THAT MOVIE INTO THE LOWEST"
2 people will never can be objectif is "Who Falling in Love" and "Who Hate something beyond the limits"
if you hate this movie, no problem, but if you what make opinion to drag people become hate it, something wrong about you

Taki and Mitsuha Romance is most ideal romance i ever seen in Anime World

I also liked the small part at start with the teacher from Garden of Words, she's teaching in that little town, pretty nice cameo.
I liked that as well.
You may also have noticed that Shinkai uses her here to take us back to Man'yōshū -once again explicitly mentioned in her writing on the blackboard in this film- for his poetic inspirations underpinning the story...

The rating reflects the good old "It seemed sad, I must give it 10/10" attitude of MAL community.

You serious? He's using the phone everyday writing journal and you said he didn't notice the date? You serious? Hahahahaha what a brain dead. Doesn't seem like you even have idea what's going on in the movie.

The typical "Look I give 6/10 while everyone gives 8-10/10. Look I'm such a hipster" attitude of MAL community.

So why does he seem so surprised when he find out she's from the past and already dead?

And if you'll go through my list, you might notice I gave big score to a lot of "mainstream" anime, so I wouldn't exactly call myself a hipster. "Not part of Makoto hype train" would be more accurate.

Theres a decent quality of the movie of Kissanime, but boy even though i watched it there I would buy the BluRay just to give a hats-off to the director.

Btw guys, maybe I'm just looking to deep into it, but what is the "message" that makoto shinkai is trying to tell us here?
Yeah a wonderful story and all, but i cant seem to grasp the meaning behind it.

A movie by Makoto Shinkai that actually had a happy ending, is the world ending? I was reluctant to watch this at first because Makoto Shinkai is notorious for his bittersweet/open-ended endings but this actually satisfied me a lot. I gave it A 9 but I couldn't exactly say it deserved the #1 in MAL. Well new anime release tend to have inflated scores anyways. The score will probably drop a little later.

Their story reminded me a little about a love story of two side characters in the anime The book of bantorra where the girl is from hundred of years ago. The boy got hold of the girl's book of life which contains her memories and she got to know him because of her powers to see the future and they "communicate" throught that.

Back to this movie, Im really glad they were able to meet up again. My face was so close to screen praying they meet each other again. Good job Makoto Shinkai.

10/10 easily for me, probably one of the best anime movies I have seen. Right up their with KNK Movie 5/7. This is 5cm when done right and the story was great too. Side characters while not the main focus still added personality to the movie. That ending though, fucking genius. If they would of have passed each other without saying anything...well they didn't so lets leave it at that. Hopefully this gets in a theater near me when Funi decides to release it. Probably gonna buy this day one, also no dub please. I don't think this movie would sound good dubbed UNLESS they get really great VA's and not the typical Funi VA's. I consider the Oscar's a joke but it would be really nice to see this film win it because it definitely deserves it.

Thought it was quite good, but the conclusion was pretty predictable. The story was well thought out and executed but I felt it didn't exceed my expectations like I thought it would. Rather it reminded me of 5 centimetres per second with a "good end" and the end of Tamako Love Story.

Kimi no na wa. didn't reinvent the wheel (which I thought it would), it just made a damn good tire.

The HYPE was REAL but it doesn't mean Kimi no na wa. is a terrible movie. I would just say it is on par with the rest of Makoto Shinkai's works but definitely (at the time of this post) doesn't deserve the highest rating (9.38) on M.A.L.
