And yes, I agree that Subaru doesn't deserve all the hate. Hell, I think any of us would've said "fuck it" long before ep 18. i think the anime took the best course of events ..anything other than that would've been a plot killer i think .. |

Or I am mixing up characters and she never died alone? Thats a good point! Though if I remember correctly Puck had told her she was on her own and needed to be careful when they were on their way to the Loot House since he needed to rest and recuperate mana. And since Subaru died before daybreak which would have been when Puck would have realised Emilia had died, we wouldn't have seen the aftermath. Which would also explain why he didn't instantly Kill everyone the moment Subaru got her killed in Episode 17? I havn't read the novels so I can't say for certain if it's proven later on or not, but it seems to at least coincide with itself to that extent? |

She's like the girl he always dreamed about; the ideal one. I think he had picture her before. He's loyal to her, and faithful to this love. Pride also keeps him from giving up on her, knowing she's endangered. |

Aslong as we don't return to this objective opinion bullshit again.... Rehls said: I had been expecting a rebuttal from Shrimperor about the story being long. What about it? It may change stuff in the future sure, but we are in the now. I've said multipe times for now and atm. It was about the lack of Emilia in the series in general for a suppossed main, not Emilia x Subaru. I have my probelms with that ship, true, but i can overlook them, as feelings are illogical like that. Reasons in the future doesn't justify the acts in the present. Also, this. Quetzaly said: I haven't watched this since ep13... Could someone tell me if it got better? (Subaru being less annoying) Thanks! Eh. Get over it. He should remain quite annoying to you, still. Perhaps you should watch episode 18 now. Watch it starting from 03:45. There'll be only a long conversation he'll have with Rem about his failures and such. Only with some flashbacks of previous events. |

She's like the girl he always dreamed about; the ideal one. I think he had picture her before. He's loyal to her, and faithful to this love. Pride also keeps him from giving up on her, knowing she's endangered. For now, I'm sure Rem got by far more screentime than Emilia. I do not doubt Emilia is the long term Main Girl, but for now, I don't think Subaru has real reasons to love her rather than just like her. The fairy tale knight and princess parallelism you mentioned is pretty obvious, but that should be after the relation growing stronger than how it is now. Just an opinion, tho. To think that 21 minutes of 2 characters talking would bring so much emotion to the table. Rem cannot stop showing how much Best Waifu material she has as she dedicates herself so much to Subaru. We get some more insight into his mind, his motives for staying behind in this world, why he acts so high and mighty, why he forces himself so much to go through this suffering and pain. Some may hate him for rejecting Rem, and I'm certainly pissed about it, but it's not like I know how love works. At the very least, this episode has given itself enough time to solidify this bond between Subaru and Rem to last the rest of the series. And to think that, apparently, this is but the prologue of Re:Zero... What have we gotten ourselves into? Side note: White Whale confirmed as Gluttony, so I bet that, when it kills people, not only does it consume the person, but their entire existence as well. This is like next level Homunculi shit right here.... |

Still unbelievable that Subaru was so broken that all Rem needed to do to perform the finishing move was to agree to run away with him. Yeah. When you act irrational from crap happening to you, sometimes you just need to sit down with a close friend, and talk. |

Let's be honest, the question isn't even about whether he's unstable or that he's yet to mature fully. It's like a friggin' force of nature that he has to worry about. Considering what little we know of it, I'm just curious why it never appeared beforehand, assuming that events would have unfolded with the same pace regardless of Subaru's interference, as his curse attracting magical beasts is effective at quite a range from what I understand. |

White whale was mentioned by Rem all the way in ep 13/14/15. But yes, considering Subaru is practically a bug in terms of fighting capabilities, and Rem got OWNED, and he has a bad reputation from ep 13 and no social position, he is screwed. And people say RTBD kills all tension. As for Subaru's mental condition, he still went completely into shock in ep 15 (dude didn't flinch when having his head smashed into a wall), and in ep 18 he laughed like the very maniac he hated without realizing it until the last moment, I doubt Rem's therapy session has completely cured his mental state of mind. |

A very powerful episode, indeed. Since I'm used to long dialogue conversations (thanks to the Monogatari series), it was a very enjoyable episode to watch. Especially hearing Subaru confess about how he actually feels and thinks. The same goes for Rem speaking out her feelings for Subaru and how she sees Subaru in own eyes. (Kinda reminds me of how Kamina from TTGL sees Simon as someone better than what Simon thinks of himself. And at some point Simon decided to believe in himself despite his own flaws. Kinda like how Subaru feels after being encouraged by Rem and to "become the most awesome hero ever" that Rem fell for and believes in). Also, props to the voice actors. The way they conveyed both characters for this episode was phenomenal. I literally teared up and cried a little from their conversations. It felt very powerful and I just can't stop praising on how well they've worked on it and how much feelings were put into to make those two characters become "alive". 10/10 Subaru obviously still has feelings for Emilia since his very first time he came into the other world. I mean, it was quite evident that he fell for her from that very first episode. Of course, Subaru also has feelings for Rem after all she has done for him throughout all of his loops in the current arc (arc 3). I mean, he even proposed to run away with her and would fully give his all for her which would mean he would give up on Emilia completely and give all his love to Rem. Although, Rem rejected his proposal as explained in this episode. Hell, Rem even went into detail about their future if they did run which was very accurate towards a certain IF chapter from the web novel ("IF Chapter: Natsuki Rem" which is a what-if non-canon story written by the author about what would happen if they did run away and live a peaceful life in Kararagi). So I still wouldn't count Rem to be out of the game just yet. Especially when we still have 7 episodes left. I think, for some people, it's not easy to get rid of your feelings for your first love/crush of your life and move on and find a second at some point. Well, that's what I think and I don't want to start a fight, so please don't hurt me... :'X Of course, I'm not saying that Emilia is best girl in the series. It's always been Rem taking that spot and arc 3 helps secure her place on the throne even more. |

WHY THE FK CANT SUBARU x REM BE CANON? Emilia is so token useless... |

I realize not everyone who watched the episode had grasped the meaning of that conversation, and why Rem told Subaru that she loves him. It wasn't as simple as a confession, it was far deeper than that. Subaru hated himself, he hated himself to death He wanted to run away from everything, everything he stood for, including his love for Emilia. He told Rem to run away with him. While that sounds like a once-in-a-lifetime-offer to Rem, she realized that this is not the same Subaru, the one she fell in love with. He fell into utter despair. She knew that if she didn't change him now, he would hate himself forever. He would be a shell of his own self, a walking corpse. So she waned to save him, by making him love himself, and being there for him. Subaru once again states that he hates himself. But Rem tells him that he can start once again. Time has clearly stopped for him once he decided to run away from everything, but Rem will make his clock move again. Thanks to that speech, Subaru has returned, he was saved from total despair. He went back to his real self, the one that loves Emilia, and that makes Rem happy, much more than being with him in a state of despair. She cries of happiness, knowing that the one she loves is back. He doesn't hate himself anymore. He has once again found a meaning in his life. |

I had been expecting a rebuttal from Shrimperor about the story being long. Do you've thoughts on this? Posts above should explain what it's about. I think you both were talking about Emilia x Subaru being justified or not and then you came with "It is justified later, then now it is fine". Unless that justification is something like Subaru being forced by some kind of magic to love Emilia even if he don't wants to, I'm with the other guy. Reasons in the future doesn't justify the acts in the present. Even though, I don't really care about ships on this anime. If I missed something and you were strictly talking about the show lenght and then the conversation degenerated into that, I don't know what you mean. The only thing I know is that the show is getting 25 eps for now. Maybe it get a second season, maybe not. Since I didn't read the novel I can talk further about the story lenght. More about Emilia not participating enough in the story, when being considered more important in it than most others, as a 'main'. Subaru x Emilia is fine to me. Shrimperor said: I hope things go better from now.If you can somehow survive ep14, the series gets better again on ep15 imo. Ep18 should also clear the annoyance thingy. Subaru has no real reason to love Emilia ?? He explained himself and I did too in a previous post: remember the end of episode 13? Emilia ask "why do you help me so much" He aswer "Because you saved me" with a flashback of ep1 Subaru saved by Emilia from the thieves. It was the exact same "you saved me" as Rem in this episode (but mixed with some selfishness back then). For Subaru, Emilia is a heroine who unfroze his lonely boring life of the real world. |

i don't really know how i feel about subaru right now. i never liked him as a character from the start, but i'm going to try my best to be "unbiased" here. he rejected rem because he favours emilia over rem romantically. i respect that. but does he truly "love" emilia? or does he just love the ideal version of emilia that he forcibly projects onto her? the whole "you saved me" has a nice ring to it and all, but what does he actually know about her? she saved him once from thieves, and they struck a couple conversations after. but that's probably the deepest interaction she's had with him (correct me if it isn't though, my memories aren't 100%). compared to the multiple deep and complex interactions rem had with subaru, his "love" for emilia is superficial as hell. he's only clinging onto her as an object of worship because of 1. his ptsd 2. her appearance 3. his version of her that even emilia herself doesn't feel like represents her. i just don't think it's fair to force a "love" like that onto emilia, who understandably has no memories of deeply interacting with subaru. not to mention, though his ptsd can be sympathized with, he honestly treats emilia with no respect (possessiveness, embarrassment at court, breaking promises without bothering to consider how important they are to her). it's not shown that he's recovered from his idea that emilia's existence is pretty much owed to him because he decided to dedicate his life to saving her. this show does a good job of exploring subaru psychologically, but if he was to end up with emilia, imo that's poor writing and a sell-out. maybe this is me being salty over this episode, but i think my day would be made if emilia rejects subaru in the exact way he rejected rem. "sorry, i (one-sidedly) love someone else. but you should help me pursue my future with them even if it'll hurt you, since your whole life is now dedicated to me anyways, right?" |

ouriel said: It was an ok build up episode, with a little character development, but nothing we haven't seen, nor nothing new that the characters themselves haven't said. The dialogue between Subaru and Rem could've been cut in half and make more progression for the story than having us watch something we, the audience already knew, as well as the characters themselves already knew. It was ok that Subaru admitted that he made mistakes for the past couple of days and that he needs to change that attitude, but it was unnecessarily prolonged and other important bits could've been introduced, i.e., Betelgeuses' backstory, tho it's nothing special, but still, they could've shown why he's the way it is, even tho I critiqued his character in a previous discussion and I still think it's a bad villain, but it would've suffice to move forward or learn something new. However, we did learn something about the spirits and a possible connection between Emilia and Satella, stemming from the fact that Emilia first introduced herself as Satella, the Witch of Envy and then Puck saying that if she were to die [Emilia], Puck is going to destroy the world, which gives a resemblance to the Witch itself. However, one thing is puzzling me, or perhaps it's a plothole that was overlooked, but why didn't Puck start a blizzard when Subaru found Emilia dead in the tavern in the first episodes? Or I am mixing up characters and she never died alone? Subaru and Emillia died together almost at the same time which means that Subaru couldn't have experienced Pack going crazy. The difference in time when Emillia fell on the floor and the moment when Subaru gave his last breath and got reset at the shopkeeper is but a few seconds. Because Subaru's the POV for the audience, you didn't see it. Because he himself didn't experience it. Rehls said: Well for that we've him being shown to be quite depressed in his old world. He must've been suffering from absence of love, as he's shown much interest in it. He said Emilia saved him, referring to the time he met her, in the alley with thugs - must've been in more ways than one. Right. She didn't only save him physically (the thugs) but his being (gave him friends, or rather, a family of sort) and his life that he hated so much (a place at the manor, a job at her sides) and mentally (she understood that something was wrong and went to comfort him). Kaiyube said: WHY THE FK CANT SUBARU x REM BE CANON? Emilia is so token useless... It seems some people don't know what it truly means to "love"' and take this word way too lightly. First of all, love isn't necessarily a rational feeling. Secundo, his love and his character would be shallow if he so easily fell for Rem instead. Third, he has the right to love whoever he wants however he wants. Making a fuss of his stupidity at the castle trying to force his love on Emillia and then telling him to accept the same thing from Rem (go for Rem you piece of shit) is completely immoral, childish and plain stupid. No, Rem didn't like the idea of running away because it isn't the Subaru she loves. The Subaru she loves is the guy who doesn't give up on those who he cares about. The Subaru she loves is the one in love with Emillia even if it means she will never be in her shoes. If anything, he was honest towards Rem. He showed her great respect and love in doing this, rather than lying to her telling her he loved her, or instead of playing her like a harem lead. |

Rem was so adorable in this episode. It was adapted very good. Subaru is Rem's Hero. That killed me and made my eyes all teary. Subaru showing off his true feelings about himself getting encouraged and then rejecting Rem T_T . Puck was amazing in his wolf (?) form destroying yet again everything. Once again to wait time for the next episode. |

I'm speechless about this episode. Well, It might sound exaggerated, but sure I was drowned in a tsunami of feelings in this one episode. This anime is waaay out of league from the mainstream stories where the powerless MC become strong after some ordeals and win against everything at the end. Subaru is powerless, he's still powerless after all those episodes, he knows that he's powerless since the beginning, he tried to give up but he knows he shouldn't even if he's powerless and after tons sufferings and bitching he still believes in his powerless self, because he wants to see the smile of the girl he loves on top of everything! That's what I love about this episode! Even Rem's confession didn't falter his love for Emilia, that's how resolved he is! He is literally willing to die for the sake of his goal(s), and imo that is something to be admired. Poor Rem tho, got rejected by her hero, I cried T^T But I'm glad she moved on and will be forever assist her beloved hero :3 |

Yeah, but it was most of it one sided (Rem to Subaru).. she just obeys everything he says without arguing which shows no more than a master and his servant relationship.. if we want to describe it from Subaru side its most likely to be a comrade or little sister relationship. |

I think that's simply because for the past few episodes Rem simply has understood that Subaru's just angry and is going through a lot of stress, and so isn't truly being a jerk out of his own volition. It's quite common in a lot of relationships where one temporarily puts up with someone's crap because they understand that they're just tired. |

Who'd have thought that one of the most brutal episodes so far would also be one of the least violent and bloodiest episodes, even with those first four minutes? I certainly didn't anticipate this series spending an entire episode (and a slightly extended one, at that) more or less entirely on one conversation between two characters, but in many ways this needed to happen, and not just for the sake of Subaru's character; the conversation covers lots of ground in explaining Rem and Subaru's personalities. Even outside of that conversation, those first four minutes were interesting as well; considering what Puck said, he is (or was, at least) far more involved with Satella than he has ever let on before now, possibly even having a contract with her in the same vein as his existing contract with Emilia. Thanks to Puck, we can also say that three of the Seven Deadly Sins are now seemingly known: Betelgeuse is Sloth, the White Whale is Gluttony and Satella is Envy. I think we can reasonably assume that the other four are around as well, but whether they'll get quite so actively involved is another matter entirely. Also, considering Puck's apparent familiarity with Satella and the Witch's Cult, it now seems even more likely to me that Emilia is a reincarnation of Satella, or something else to that effect. I think the cruelest bit of this episode, though, was Subaru declaring his love for Emilia after all that Rem had said to him to seemingly pull him out of his slump and refocus him. |

@Tony_SansNom There was a timeline in which Emilia went to the tavern alone, it was sunset already, while Subaru was searching for Felt to extract information and/or save her and make a better deal Else, in order to avoid her. Also, they didn't die quite at the same time, but it wasn't that long of a time gap either, so it's possible for Subaru not to witness Puck becoming enraged. Next, if I remember correctly, in episode 14, Puck was already out in daytime, so there's a bit of contradiction to how the events are playing out, unless it was nighttime, but I doubt it'll take that much time to go through the whole mansion |
