 New anime film for Haikara-san ga Tooru has been announced for 2017, in commemoration of the series' 40th anniversary.Haikara-san ga Tooru is drawn by Waki Yamato, which was serialized by Kodansha in Shoujo Friend magazine from 1975 to 1977. The series won the first Kodansha Manga Award for Shoujo category in 1977. It was later adapted as a 42-episode TV anime by Nippon Animation, airing from June 3, 1978 to March 31, 1979 on TV Asahi. The anime was later rebroadcast across Japan on the anime satellite TV network Animax and on NHK satellite channel BS2. The manga was also adapted into three TV drama specials in 1979, 1985 & 2002 and a theatrical film in 1987. Synopsis Benio Hanamura is a 17-year-old schoolgirl in Tokyo during the Taisho era. Benio lost her mother when she was very young and has been raised by her father, a high-ranking official in the Japanese army. As a result, she has grown into a tomboy—contrary to traditional Japanese notions of femininity, she studies kendo, drinks sake, dresses in often outlandish-looking Western fashions, and isn't as interested in housewife duties as she is in literature.
