That's why I'd rather collect the tankoubon or bunkobon of a given series instead of any volumes Yen Press would publish. |

| midway through it follows, dont get me wrong this movie is creepy, but im laughing alot at it cause its just so fucking goofy, i kind of wish i watched it with friends cause i keep coming up with jokes in my head but no one to tell them to in the moment so they just go to waste i do think i see why alot of my friends who have seen it say its trash though just judging by how much im making fun of it but im genuinly enjoying it right now and unless it shits the bed i dont think ill dislike it, theres actual suspense here rather than jump scares and thats a massive plus |

I haven't had time to read the novel in-depth (I had enough time to skim for names and relevant changes but right now I have a plane to catch in five hours) but the translation quality was...better, I think, overall than the fan-translations. In terms of style/density, perhaps. Honestly overall I really am grateful that they licensed the series at all. I admit that after seeing them translate "well, no matter" as "well, never mind" I am a little antsy as to how they will translate certain other phrases and names later on in the story. For instance: I am fervently hoping they don't translate Nile's "I say this" as something long-winded and inane, and if they translate "Tick" as "Chick" I will probably fight someone. | FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK Am i just....destined to jinx myself every time i compliment a show or movie midway through, the 2nd half of it follows was dogshit, the character's intelligence nosedives alongside the creativity on how the suspense and scares are distributed, i didnt feel even remotely anxious throughout the entire 2nd half and one character's entire exsistence in particular im just going to pretend is meant to be comedic cause nothing he did made sensehe will be remembered by me as the guy who's famous last words were "what the FUUUCK moooooom", oh and it even pulled a jump scare like 5 minutes after i wrote a comment complimenting its use of no jump scares even while goofy the first half had this creepy atmosphere and mysterious presence that made me keep looking in the background just to find any hint of whats coming, there were some creative scares in there both sublte and abrupt that honestly caught me off guard and the whole thing felt like it was leading to being a horror classic, but unfortunately they used all their big guns for the first 40 minutes leaving the rest of the film repeating scares verbatim to lesser effect and just overall feeling more dumb than scary. god damn it i wanted to rub it in my friends faces that i liked this movie and i wound up on the same side of the spectrum. This was still one of the most creative horror films ive ever seen unfortunately it just couldn't keep it guns up enough to really make the impact it needed to, i'll be generous here because of that first half the creativity and give it a reluctant 5/10, normally id be harsher when something wastes this much potential and tanks this hard in the 2nd half, but i want to say the first half was the first time a film has scarred me in like 9 to 10 years and that wins it alot of points well maybe babadook will not leave such a foul taste in my mouth |
