The winners of the 14th Animation Kobe Awards (Wikipedia) are as follows:

Individual Award: Kato Kunio ("La Maison en Petits Cubes")
Special Award: Yukimuro Shun-ichi (script of "Sazae-san")

Feature Film Award: WALL-E
TV Feature Award: Higashi no Eden
Network Media Award: The Melancholy of Haruhi-chan Suzumiya & Nyoro-n Churuya-san
Theme Song Award: Don't say “lazy” ("K-ON!")

The chief judge Matsushita Shun-ya said the judges got into an imbroglio over whether they should choose the foreign anime Wall-E since the objective of Animation Kobe is to promote of the anime industry in Japan. They finally reached the agreement because Wall-E's harmony between the animation and the digital technique was noteworthy.

Is it a popularity contest kind of system? From the looks of it, it's done by votes. If that is the case, it makes sense why K-On, Lucky Star, and Haruhi theme songs all came first in their respective years. I'm ignoring whether they're good or not when I say this (don't know Lucky Star song).

The sales and general popularity probably contributed to the awards as well.

Not saying it's a bad song, but there are probably better ones out there.

And the longetivity award goes to SANAE-SAN.
WALL-E went downhill in the second half in my opinion but it was still impressive animation-wise.

Haruhi-chan and Nyoro-n Churuya-san? Gehh.

I'm not too annoyed about Don't Say "Lazy" though. Sure, K-ON! is pure mediocrity but it's a decent song. Far, far better than the show itself, at least. But Haruhi and Lucky Star previous years? What the HELL!? Haruhi's ED/OP were average at best and Lucky Star's OP was terrible.

...waitwhat? D: I liked it, but it was far better OP and EDs this year.

Anyways, I'm happy for Eden of the East and Haruhi-chan.

Agreed. It was an excellent film, regardless of the country of origin...
But K-On's ending theme? Really? That's probably my least favorite aspect of the show.

This.

Oh, good — HnE got an award.

Theme Song Award: Don't say “lazy” ("K-ON!")
IMHO it was pretty good for an ED. 'Theme Song Award' sounds kind of general, so it probably factors in stuff like catchiness and thus popularity.

Try to name some other OPs and EDs you remember from the last year. I certainly can't remember a whole lot and none of them were as catchy. Say what you will about K-On! the show; the ED was fantastic.

Some people here need to get some tastes here. Saying that K-On ED is mediocre, LMAO. One of the best endings this year, oh wait, it is the best.

Anyway, I'm not surprised about awards because I suspected something like this and I pretty much pleased with these rewards.

Awesome. I liked the anime very much, I know that it wasn't very innovative or diferent from any other thing I've seem before but I've got to reconize that it catched me, mostly because of the soundtrack. So these is no surprise for me.

Which is pretty sad, imo, as some other people have said also. Nothing wrong with the music itself, but Engrish just isn't my style. I was actually quite interested after the first or second time of hearing it, then this kept on popping up:

Just because it placed #2 on Oricon and sold like 100k copies or something, I suppose.

I'd rather see something like SHIN AI up there, tbh. That was an awesome OP. Although the show sucked.

Er, I love K-On but...seriously. The ending song is obsessed over a little too much.

Glad about Higashi no Eden getting recognition. It deserves it.

Well, considering I mostly skip ED songs, so ill go with OPs...Just to name a few :
Sisters of Wellber II, Spice & Wolf , Mnemosyne, xxxHolic Kei(which works perfectly in terms of catchiness),, D.M.C, Moryou No Hako, Tytania, Kurozuka

and many many others...

So yes, there were a lot of other songs MORE memorable than the fail which won.

Pff, K-on ending is great.
Again some lover like the song just because it's in a moe-blob show and some hater hate the song for the same reason.
