If you can rationalize the two pictures above you will realize plot wise how bad the first episode was. I will not say more.

Dunno if someone rationlised it yet but... The reason the first train had stopped and the bridge was up was because they probably didn't expect a train to come that early. in fact they say that the train was supposed to come the next day but came quicker due to the prior station being compromised. So no one was probably manning the gates to lower the bridge so the train stopped before falling to it's demise like any normal conductor would do. They also coplain that the "husoujyo" was to come later that night and complained that they where getting 2 trains in one day. The reason a guy was manning the lever and put down the bridge was cause they where expecting the train, and in most anime where they think they are secure they don't have a second thought that the train could be over run because of plot convienience. So that's my rationalisation of it.

People hyping Re:Zero kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu, but this anime has so much potential already. The first episode only shows it has so many things to offer. I personally to was a bit skeptical about being a AoT clone. But was i wrong. Wouldn't be surprised if this was the best anime the spring.

Am I the only one that can't stand the MC's voice when it's anything but neutral voice tone? When he spoke to the Lord's daughter he sounded like an old man that smoked all his life, when he was screaming to the guards he sounded like a cat in heat. Absolutely horrible.

The AoT similarities are a little too many for me. The first episode basically was almost a redo of AoT's first episode. I really hope the'll manage to differentiate themselves more in the future episodes.

Also, the strangulation scene was kinda dumb. Not only the virus or whatever that thing is was stopped by that, but it also disappeared almost immediately after not being able to pass through his neck. More so, he seemed to be just fine after having his neck under such pressure.

The Art is really preatty tho, looks like a modern take on the old 90s style. Big plus for them on that.

It seems the virus has a really short incubation/latency period so maybe the infection lasts for a really short while too. What's stranger is that preventing the virus from reaching your brain prevents your whole body from mutating.

He stopped the virus from reaching his brain, but that doesn't explain how the virus died. Maybe the virus dies if it doesn't end up affecting you ?

That's what I thought, but the virus clearly spread over the collar. That would mean that it got through it...
I'm not a biologist, but I'm pretty sure Viruses infect cells and manipulates them in a way, that they start to produce new viruses instead of reproducing - that means that viruses don't care if they affected anything. They simply start infecting as much of you as they can.
And I'm pretty sure that compressing your neck so hard, that even blood can't traverse it would kill you, or at least break a lot of important parts of your body.
So the only possible explanation is, that the MC is wrong about it being a virus and it's something like a organism, an intelligent collective - but even this explanation leaves some plot holes.

PS: I would have prefered that the MC would have cut of his arm^^

If you are comparing it with part B, I think Re:Zero still boasts the best premier episode so far because it was ridiculously confusing yet thoroughly intriguing. Kabaneri on the other hand has excellent animation but the overall execution of the plot/premise in the episode was nothing outstanding, albeit predictable (needless to say, followed the same Shingeki no Kyojin pattern) but I can understand why fans will like it (likable male MC, female MC has a fine kick, blood gore, gunshots and rinse and repeat Sawano BGM which is hardly ever tiring).

I'm sorry bro but you're either stupid, illterate or just watched this episode without subs.

The first image you saw is NOT how they normally handle the trains. In the image above this trains is off schedule because of the kabane, normally if they had come on time the team would have let down the bridge so they can pass in.

In the second train entrance scene, the workers specifically say "It's here! It's the housoyga"(name of the train)
"It's here on time"

The bridge drops so that the train can come in slowly without coming to a full stop, this is how they normally have been doing it for 20 years.

There is no writing flaw here, just you playing dumb and not paying attention when you should have been.

Yeah, when I said on par I did mean that Re:Zero started off better overall, but I definitely don't think this is too far off, primarily because of part A of that first episode of Re:Zero. If I was just thinking part B, Re:Zero definitely was better without a shadow of a doubt, though both seem like strong, promising series with definite potential.

Those Kabane are a lot stronger than I thought they would be & are pretty smart.
The art & animation is great. The background & atmosphere is amazing.

Ikoma is an interesting character. That piercing gun destroying that Kabane's heart.
Mumei is so badass taking off the head of one using a spike attached to her sandal.

The OST is great and loving the OP song. Love hearing EGOIST.

Zombies on a train...now where have I heard of that before? Nonetheless, the art, the music, and action--all really good, and set in an interesting time period as well. I expect great things from this.

For a second I thought he was going to lop off his arm. As for those hearts, I'm guessing he knew they were infected, let them harden into iron from the virus, and experiment on them to use them as targets to see if his gun works on them.

Edit:
Now that I think about it, if the hearts are protected by hardened iron difficult to penetrate, why not just do what Mumei did in the end there and go for the head?

Same - I thought he was going to cut his hand, and, as a matter of fact, I expected the first guy (in the beginning) to do it, but instead he pulled the mysterious suicide pouch.

Of course, virus infections don't work like this in real life, but as seen, the infection changes the flesh, and, notably, thickens and enlarges the veins. The enlargement could explain the lightning fast spread, but the thickening somewhat nods to why Ikoma succeeded to stop it by applying pressure. Possibly, the teal gem also plays some role in this, however, I'll bet that negating panic and fear is also important. Why? For no particular reason, aside the Kabane greatly differ from titans in being somewhat oddly emotional. They look like ... not so elegantly wastes humans :)

On the episode:
The attention to details is indeed amazing and I loved it! The close-ups of the characters are gorgeous, the backgrounds are rich, and the animation is excellent.

I like Ikoma already for being rational and cool-headed, when everyone resides to fear and cruelty, but passionate in his research. Well, the guy doesn't succumb to regulations either, which is a major plus :D

Trains have names and are in fact the iron fortresses of human survival.

No salts here. Just stating the pudding. In open broad daylight, they make a train stop to make sure it's safe and even inspect the people on board stark naked for injuries and in the darkness of night, they lower the bridge to let it in without a second thought when the train was not even on sight. You may justify with the dumb nobody who lowered the bridge though but yeah, there was his superior giving instructions as well.

You must be the one who gave 3 out of 5 right? Huh.

If that is difficult to figure it out when I said my initial impression was a 6.5/10 then it will be difficult for you to fathom the two pictures I posted to rationalize.

Yes, it's a stupid twist but the thing is they already checked the first train and it was fine and the second one came just in time so guards never taught it will be infected.

Well then... for starter let's forget about this being another SNK, even if only because there is too much Japan in this show so it won't sell worldwide.

Now ignoring the hype and focusing on the show.

It was quite good. A zombie apocalypse in steam punk world setting. How could it be bad. What's more MC is quite a bad ass, it's been a while since I saw such a good MC in the show. His only flaw is probably being a little bit too 'good', despite knowing the reality of the world. Trying to fight the system knowing what it will lead to was stupid thing to do. Other than that though, even though it was quite suicidal thing to do... he actually lured in one of the zombies just to test out his weapon.

The most bad ass part however was when he was fighting an infection by hanging himself. That scene was simply great.

Speaking of which, at the beginning of the episode someone got bit on the hand and had to commit the suicide. IN that moment I realized... okay zombies... but why does the guy is killing himself... is that infection really so overpowered. I am pretty sure that cutting off an arm would do the trick. Did no one really never tried it out for 20 years? Based on what MC did at the end of episode, it should work.

Following that while I do like the world setting with corrupt to the core world government, I am not a fan of the japan-based on government with setting like this. All those shoguns and girls wearing kimonos and yukatas (I can't tell the difference)... I do like them but not in series like this. So that's a minus.

Lastly while animation and music were great, animation did have some issues here and there and in particular, I somehow felt that some characters felt out of harmony with the background sometimes. Those two kimono wearing girls in particular... I don't know whatever it's only me or not. (also for soundtrack, while everything was great, I don't think that there was anything 'fantastic' yet, or at the very least, the best pieces were cut out too fast before they got going)

All in all though it was a great first episode and the series is looking good... still comparing to this season. BNHA first episode was better, but I am not too hyped about BNHA knowing the story later on, so I will put this higher than that on the first place. Re:Zero by far made me much more excited about the anime... I am still feeling the hype for that series like no other... lastly there is always Jojo who is most likely impossible to beat.

Still even though it will be hard this series has potential to take the nr.1 spot, I read somewhere that there was some preview of first three episode and that the first one is slow, while the other two really get the story going. Hopefully it will be the truth. Not that the series is bad as it is. Still remembering how everyone kept on hyping it up to be next SNK, I already see it won't happen. (Next SNK, popularity/hype wise. It's not that hard for anime to be on SNK level.)

To everyone comparing this and Attack on titan: keep on beating the dead horse why don't you?

They're similar we get it, alright?

OT, the artstyle is really top-notch but was anyone else less than impressed with the actual animation?

It wasn't that fluid really, although I didn't watch it on Amazon so it might simply have been bad video quality that I experienced.

Splendid action but not very substantial (yet), hopefully the plot and setting deepens or thickens if you will.

More bombastic action anime is always welcome I say.

Interesting, bit predictable with the 2nd train coming at night however.

Hopping the MC's personality changes sooner better then later. Can't really stand him, everything that comes out of his mouth makes me cringe. I do think it was pretty cool seeing him try to stop the infection from spreading, I'm guessing he gained some power from his entire body besides his brain getting infected.

Loli girl has some great fighting skills, interested to see more of her story.
Overall it was okay, art makes the characters shine a lot (takes some getting used to) but still enjoyable. Looking forward to the next episode.

I highly doubt that in a zombie apocalypse ANYONE would do something as stupid is to open a gate for a train before the train is even visible. I can't think of a single good reason why you wouldn't leave the door closed to verify that the train isn't overrun with zombies, then let them in afterwords. I don't think their protocol is to leave a door wide open for a train they can't see in the middle of the night, and THEN AFTER THEY LET THEM IN go on with the search to see if there are any zombies... So even if you're right and that's the normal thing, that doesn't make it any less stupid. Honestly I still really enjoyed the first episode, but I physically cringe whenever I see "human stupidity" used as a plot device. Hope that doesn't happen again later on.

That wasn't too bad, I just hope that this anime doesn't become an exact rehash of SnK. Many people, myself included, assumed that would be the case. Of course, this episode had similarities to SnK, like the Kabane breaking through the wall and killing a bunch of people, and the protagonist himself seems kind of similar to Eren. Hopefully future episodes allow this anime to set itself apart as its own entity, because it would be kind of annoying seeing "SNK RIPOFF ERGHEHRSVJLNAV" comments every single week.

If this anime ends up being a train wreck, at least the audiovisuals are nice.

1. Too simiar too snk, blatant snk rip off!
2. I actually like this more than snk. :D
3. It has similarities to snk, but not that much to call it a rip off.
4. It's similar to snk so I like it! :D
5. Not impress with this series, visuals and animation wasn't good, story isn't that interesting.

You might as well call this koutetsujou no Kabaneri+attack on titan discussion thread, since 90% of the comments are going to mention snk. I guess it can't be helped.

That was a gripping first episode. The MC's voice feels somewhat off, though I can't place my finger on it.

Why the MC can stop the "virus" but the other commits suicide ?

Why this is completely incoherent from the first episode?

Because they are so afraid of the kabane that they've not tried anything other than exterminating the infected? I think the episode made that pretty clear.

This . Yeah the kabane are a bit intelligent , knowing how to man a train and timing its arrival with its schedule . You wouldn't label them as regular zombies

Also, the kabane that attacked the MC dropped down from the roof instead of following the blood trail, that was pretty intelligent I would say.

7/10 for it's plot holes, but damn this production quality is among the gods.
I can see this thing sell like hot cakes.

Am I the only one who did not understand the end? How does strangling yourself help to kill a VIRUS?
although this wouldn't really make any sense but I can only assume its a fast spreading but short life virus that needs to get to your brain quickly it didn't so the virus died.

So this is basically steam punk AoT. Yes, letting in the late train was stupid but otherwise the episode was good.
your waifu is shit
