I like having the lips visible. I usually prefer them to be subtle; although there are occasional exceptions.

It's just a stylistic choice like the nearly non-existent noses. Many newer artists are influenced by this style and seek to emulate it for their creations, which influence a new generation, and so on. The cycle just goes on and on.

Making the lips invisible or shading near a presumed lower lip gives the appearance of soft lips. This subtle accent actually works quite well. I like to see the soft line from a far and then fuller lips when closing up~

Why do so few anime have defined lips? I can think of two reasons:

1) Lips are actually very hard to draw. If you do them wrong, it just looks bad. So defined lips are kept to a minimum to limit what can go wrong in any given shot. Anime has what, 24 FPS? That's a lot of things that can go wonky in a short amount of time.

2) Conservation of detail. Anime and manga are generally very simplistic, so adding lines in an area that isn't the eyes can look weird. Dark, defined lines around the mouth make the character look old. Plus, odd-looking mouths can be very off putting, and defined lips are limited to characters who have larger lips. Think like Major General Armstrong from Fullmetal Alchemist. (Though I would argue that the anime doesn't do her lips particularly well - I'm just using her as an example of character design.)

Personally, I like anime that use a line for the bottom lip and some shadow definition, but I don't really like ones that have full, detailed lips.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed this.

OT: I understand that due to time and budget restraints, most anime has to resort to simplified character designs and uniforms, but I appreciate it when they put in the extra time, money, and effort to give the characters detailed facial features. Big studios like Production IG, Madhouse, and Shaft can usually afford lips.

Who needs lips anyway. they just get in the way of my enjoyment. Its not cute at all, and i find it quite disturbing most of the time. I will avoid anime with very detailed lips because it just looks gross in anime. maybe thats why there aren't many anime with detailed lips. Because nobody wants to see that.

Not a huge fan of lips in anime; especially when a lot of attention is drawn to them and are supposed to make a female character look more sexy. It's just awkward. Shadows and/or light outlines are the best imo. Visible makeup in anime in general looks weird to me though.

Yukimura's lips also hinted towards the fact that she's a girl. Girls usually aren't allowed to wear makeup in Japanese high schools so it's up to the "eyelash rule" to define the sexes of the characters (I would say genders, but Yukimura's gender is far too confusing to put her into a category. She's like a reverse reverse-trap).

I didn't know Japanese girls aren't allowed to wear make-up. Make-up often emphasizes lips. Maybe the lack of lips comes from that.

I guess it just goes along with the art style. Both the noses and lips are made smaller to be cute. Typically anime only shows the lips when puckered or when doing something specific with them. *ahem* Otherwise, noses and lips aren't that flattering.
