Anime always seems to avoid making lips visible for us to see but things that can make them visible are:

Highlights

If you look at their mouths you see white shade on it

Shadows

Makeup

Seriously, whats stopping anime studios from coloring the lips pink, since thats the color of the lips,I mean why keep it invisible like that when you can add just a pink shade on the mouth?

Shingeki no Bahamut did it, somehow. It looked good on female characters, but take a look at the MC...

Because anime is supposed to represent manga not reality.

Studios are lazy. It's also seen as feminine, maybe.

Also an excuse to post Mibuchi and his lips:

I'm not a fan when there's some color that passes off for lips. There's a character in Dennou Coil which has some color on her mouth, but it never has a lip-like shape. Contrast it with Sena from Haganai.

How come characters with lipstick on lips would stay visible the whole time like Satella for example?

Do not want. Drawing characters as realistically as possible is not the point. Showing lip definition is fine, but I don't want to see pink lips.

There are a lot of things that they leave out in anime because it would be hard to draw it realistically. In Haganai they used lips as a way to show the difference between the male and female characters similar to how eyelashes are often used. Everyone has eyelashes and in Japanese schools kids aren't allowed to wear makeup but the animators will still give female characters more visible eyelashes than males.

Modern anime prefer to define by shadow usage instead of a permanent line.
It's true anime characters tend to have simple mouth (their superior lip, above all) but, in general, you will find the defined lips on seinen/josei (because they're made for adults, adults like realism and complexity)
and the less defined lips on moe anime (because moe is based on childrish things).
Please notice old anime (70s to 80s) are different from modern anime because moe didn't exist and they were more "westernized", it was common to see shoujo anime where female characters have more defined superior lips than the averange modern shoujo female character.
I think colored lips aren't as common as it was in the past

Because anime is supposed to represent manga not reality.

It doesn't make sense:
a) Not every anime is based on manga
b) Excluding covers, manga don't have color.
c) Manga and anime are based on reality: lips aren't skin because lips are mucosa, their color and texture are different.

i believe you're wrong. with no closeups, there are a lot of anime that have anything on the face visible. don't have the time now, but perhaps i'll put up proof later.

Still the less defined one, if you look at moe anime lips they are a single dot, a single line or a single circle.
The best definition is drawning lips like some seinen, josei, 70's and 80's do: permanent line, they are always defined and they become more defined when shadow and highlight are applied.
Shadow is a good way of defining but, it means lip itself is not defined, we can only see it when there is shadow. Same happens to highlight.

Seinen has the best lips.

Much better than that moe garbage for kids. Only kids watch junk like this.
BTW you might need to zoom in a bit to actually see their lips. They are drawn in, but they're quite thin.
(I still don't understand why some people think that moe and seinen are different demographics)

If we need to zoom in in order to see her "real" mouth, her mouth is not defined. Should we watch it with magnifying glass? Are we supposed to watch her on a very big screen?
I said "you will find the defined lips on seinen/josei (because they're made for adults, adults like realism and complexity)...and the less defined lips on moe anime (because moe is based on childrish things)." I'm not saying seinen and moe can't be together, I'm entablishing which genre often has the most defined lips. Everybody knows how moe style is, it's very obvious which genre has the less defined face details.

In the shows it's easiest to see their lips when they're closer to the "camera". I just mentioned those two because those of the seinen anime I've seen that have the most visible lips. Most of the seinen anime I watch is moe and vise versa.

Definitely not. In modern anime female characters generally have no lips or just a bottom lip or super small lips. In western cartoons especially super hero cartoons female characters have constant , normal size visible lips (both lips).
