| I'm not a fan when there's some color that passes off for lips. There's a character in Dennou Coil which has some color on her mouth, but it never has a lip-like shape. Contrast it with Sena from Haganai. |

| There are a lot of things that they leave out in anime because it would be hard to draw it realistically. In Haganai they used lips as a way to show the difference between the male and female characters similar to how eyelashes are often used. Everyone has eyelashes and in Japanese schools kids aren't allowed to wear makeup but the animators will still give female characters more visible eyelashes than males. |

| Modern anime prefer to define by shadow usage instead of a permanent line. It's true anime characters tend to have simple mouth (their superior lip, above all) but, in general, you will find the defined lips on seinen/josei (because they're made for adults, adults like realism and complexity) and the less defined lips on moe anime (because moe is based on childrish things). Please notice old anime (70s to 80s) are different from modern anime because moe didn't exist and they were more "westernized", it was common to see shoujo anime where female characters have more defined superior lips than the averange modern shoujo female character. I think colored lips aren't as common as it was in the past |

It doesn't make sense: a) Not every anime is based on manga b) Excluding covers, manga don't have color. c) Manga and anime are based on reality: lips aren't skin because lips are mucosa, their color and texture are different. |
