People are obsessed with 'elitists' because many people are insecure about their opinions. They can't explain them very well and they don't know much about logic.

So when someone who comes off as 'intellectual' arrives (Sometimes legitimately, sometimes not) it's easier to just write them off as 'elitist'.

Remember - You don't have to develop deep thinking if you're always sure you're right, and dismiss everyone who disagrees with you with ad hominem?

No.

Most of the time people act "obsessed" is because they are mocked beforehand, are reminded that they are shitty human beings for liking certain anime, and are even being called names without warning from these people.

This fits what an elitist entails, a person with a high superiority complex. Taste in anime and intellect are irrelevant when it comes to personifying an elitist. It's simply someone who feels elite to others, and simply will not debate without resorting to dismissal of alternative opinions. They include both trolls and people who take trolling limits higher than they should be.

The point being made is that these elitists barely even exist.
Nevermind the fact that most people don't even know what an elitist is (Oh, you like LogH? You're an elitist then), these elitists are simply not nearly prolific as what everyone makes them out to be.

I've rarely came across actual elitists, yet with the amount of threads on AD bashing them you'd think they were running the place.
These people calling everyone out as being elitists aren't being mocked and insulted beforehand in most cases. They just can't handle criticism and let their fan boy/girl bias take over.
It's an entirely different kind of flying, altogether!
It's an entirely different kind of flying.

Of course they do, I am an advocate of democracy and freedom of speech so I wouldn't try to take away their right to voice their opinion on elitists (*cough cough* unlike certain anti piracy moralists *cough cough)

I'm just pointing out the fact that they're making a lot of noise over a very tiny group of people and are doing the exact same thing as the elitists (a.k.a. "hating because it's cool to do so")

I have talked to some of those anti-elitist and apparently they all think they're actually 'fighting for a cause' but what they're really doing throwing in more shit into the clog.
So the end result is basically more shit.
So, basically, like the "weeaboo hunters" who accuse all sub fans of being weeaboos and will use tremendous amounts of ad hominem to attack anybody who doesn't like dubbed Chinese cartoons?

People need to understand that just because someone criticize your favorite anime doesn't mean he or she is elitist. But then again, anime community is never a smart community at all. Anime forum has always been cancerous whether it's someone trying to force their opinion down your throat or people getting defensive when someone criticize their favorite anime.
ZapredonMar 4, 2016 10:17 AM
But it's important to remember that a movie review is subjective;it only gives you one person's opinion.

http://www.classzone.com/books/lnetwork_gr08/page_build.cfm?content=analyz_media&ch=30

It doesn't matter if you like LoGH,Monster etc.If you are a jobless or college/school dropout living in your mom basement, you are still an unintelligent loser. Taste in anime does not make you a better person. If elitist don't exist, casual pleb and shit taste also don't exist.

Sometimes these two categories come across the same things. Like anime taste, opinions etc...
And yeah, if not always, then most of the times, both of them are annoying with what they do or how they do something

No opinion on elitists, I have never called anyone that

One gripe I have on 'hipsters' I have on this board is that the so called 'mainstream' anime listed here are not actually mainstream.

Big three and DB then yeah they are mainstream but quite a lot of times calling the franchises considered 'mainstream' here would be like calling AnCo mainstream because they are ubiquitous on online boards. Sometimes series that half-flopped there would be hyped here and be suddenly named mainstream.

Thus I discount any 'hipster' talk here too...in a sense we are all hipsters

This reminds me of Plato's allegory of the cave. The man goes out and see the sun and learns all sorts of new things. He goes back to bring the knowledge to the cave dwellers and then shun and attempt to kill him.

Anime fans are scared of themselves, and a lot of them are really stupid and can't articulate themselves without resorting to personal attacks.

I found elitists to more damaging than casuals in my eyes.
Sure the casuals can love stuff like SAO and TG I just personaly ingore them because starting a argument with them is cringing experience.

Yeah, weeaboo hunters are more common in the comment section of Youtube (then again all kinds of cancer are more common in that hellhole)

I haven't seen as many weeaboo hunters on MAL but they do exist and a lot of dub fans seem to have certain "weeaboo hunter" features

This is actually the root cause of the problem.
When a person thinks that they can do no wrong but then they are proven otherwise, logic goes for a toss and ad hominem responses are deployed.

The problem actually starts when we take anime way to serious, like being over the top, it's good to have critical thinking, pointing what is bad while pointing the good things aswell, but when we cross that line it's when we should stop the discussion and just enjoy what we like and not care much about the community on the internet.

There are various reasons for it. I know a guy who automatically hates anything popular because he wants to be different; he has based his entire personality off of it and it's really sad. I get hating these people and since I know him in person, I can safely say guys like that truly do exist.

But then there are people who think shitting on their favorite anime is a personal attack on their tastes. Those get butthurt pretty easily and screaming "Elitist!" is the only defense they can come up with.

People first have to know the meaning of the word elitist before using it so lightly. An elitist is someone who believes that he/she is superior to others because of his/her superior taste. It doesn't have nothing to do with like animes like LOTGH or Ping-Pong or with hate popular animes (one person can hate a popular anime like SAO, but like another popular work like AoT).

Also, elitism is NOT always related to like series like LOTGH, there can be elitistism related to who has a better way to watch anime (happened in 4chan) or even elitists who likes SAO (picking a random anime) and think they are superior to other people because they like it.

Remember kids, elitism is not related to tastes, but to behavior. Just happens that some elitist likes some kind of animes, who is the reason why the word is related to the series mentioned above.

Elitism isn't really related with behavior, but with believes. What has to do with behavior is being a Snob, that is an elitist that shows his superiority complex, but shitting on the "inferior".

Yes... about that, I kinda feel that people doesn't actually realize they're actually acting like those "elitist" or "hipsters".

I also think that if they do that is to be "different" (at the end they're not) but you know... when you're in front of a crowd who wants it, being the only one against it might give you the feel you're special and have a true identity. Which is pretty dumb though.

Oh here we go again! People, every opinion is valid! Just because the majority agree with your OPINION does not make you right, and just because the majority disagrees with you does make your OPINION wrong.

Elitists this. Elitists that. Who really gives a damn? Everyone feels the way they feel, and there is no sense arguing with someone about their OPINIONS! Sure, discuss it if you want, but blame nobody but yourself if you get your feelings hurt.

I usually do not comment on anime I hate unless someone makes a thread about it specifically asking me WHY I hate it. Then, they are just asking to get their favorites bashed.

Why? Because I could not give a flying piglet about something I do not like, and if people want to fangirl over a crappy anime, that is their prerogative. None of my business.

And, if I like an anime, I do not praise it unless someone asks me WHY I like it, but I do give constructive criticism.

Me, I have gotten into countless arguments on this site and others cause someone did not LIKE my OPINION. Like I care. I'm still going to say whatever I want if that's how I feel.

Main Point: People throw around the word elitist to make themselves feel better about their own opinions being criticized. Because, there must be something wrong with THEM if they do not like what I like. And, "elitists" do the same thing. In the end, you like what you like. Everyone has a right to say how they feel about whatever it is.

Get over it.

You are damn right i am different. I have big hands.
And Nicolas Cage looks like he's about to deep throat my soul. Okay you pass.

@Raiichi - The main thing to consider is that the people who are actually serious about it won't ever fit the word to the T. No doubt there are people who do it jokingly, hell you should never take me completely seriously. Except when I am. Terms like elitist and hipster have evolved into hyperbole, but the people who exhibit such traits aren't going to be a complete embodiment of them.

I'll say this.
I've never had an "elitist" send me hate messages, bait me on my profile, and bait me in threads for having shigatsu in my favorites or liking any other "pleb" series.

I only see these threads created by people who consider themselves casuals or moe fans.

Also, I see people who say "well they only hate this anime because it's popular". Honestly, let them hate, you can't change that. Besides, more often than not, the people who claim someone hates a series for being "popular" is just taking the other person's statement out of context.
Why can't yall just leave each other alone and let people like what they like, hate what they hate, and rate however they want to rate.

Yes, I've seen enough of them elitists. They keep claiming their theory of what makes an anime good and "quality" matters more than the show actually speaking about things that are relevant to the audience.
They keep getting annoyed at shows breaking their rules of good writing, yet no one of them complains about all the shows breaking the laws of physics. I like them laws of physics a lot more, damnit!

Basically, this.
I wouldn't want anime to start catering to elitists and their desires for depth and perfection. In fact, I tend to dislike depth - if the author wants to say something, he should just do so; if the character is meant to be a hero, let him be a hero, he doesn't need no fucking flaws. And no matter how much anime authors hammer out anime's characters and pacing, no one of them is going to actually make physics work alright, because they are bad at it.
And just like Mamser-P, I don't want elitists taking over the forums too.

One of these days I'm going to post a question stating.

"what's up with all these casuals on forums, why are they so obsessed with their taste?"

100% I'll get bashed hard as an elitist and probably get banned.
Brace yourself.

Soon as LotGH 2017 comes out. The anime community is going to become so cancerous you will need to take cover and hide.

I got just a few high rated series that are considered casual, but I as well as other users have gotten bashed more for being an "elitist" than any of us did for being a casual or pleb.

Whenever someone wants to tell me how stupid I am for liking a particular series, it's usually from self proclaimed casual fans.

Like I said, people need to just leave each other alone on what they watch.

This doesn't sound like elitism to me, at least not how people describe it. Most people describe elitists as those with some superiority complex, generally using something ('intellectualism') to justify it.

In general, any time I've seen anyone being called an elitist is because they had the appearance of intellect. Sometimes the appearance was bullshit, sometimes not.

People who bully others are just bullies.

I guess people who complain about elitists are jumping the bandwagon, have a persecution complex and just want to feel validated, like some people said above. Personally, I don't care if someone doesn't like things that I like or try to tell me how objectively bad they are.

As for elitists themselves, I don't really call people elitists because of their behavior, but if they call themselves one, well, that's how I'll see them from now on.

I wouldn't really publicly criticize these self-called elitists because I don't really care much for their opinions. I feel a little sad for those anime fans that watch everything in sight just to complain how bad it is during and afterwards and they haven't enjoyed anything that aired after the 1980s.

there are always those who can't understand that because they enjoy something, that not everyone else is going to enjoy it too. that applies to the "elitist" and "elitist hunters"

Everybody is scared of the elitist boogeymen.

And common boogeymen make good reason for circlejerking.

That's why I'm saying lol, most of the time those being accused of being an elitist aren't even elitists anyway; people misuse the phrase all the time.

If you dislike something generically popular in weeb crowds of teenagers you're an elitist.

If you dislike something artsy and niche you're a casual fggt.

Nobody wins when the popularity or how hipster something is dictates your enjoyment of something. Everyone's puts everyone else and themselves in camps and it becomes their enjoyment identity but that just ends up limiting your actual enjoyment of things.

I like what I like, just because I enjoy the deeper movies doesn't mean I won't be in the audience of some of the latest corny summer blockbusters. same goes with anime. I think it just tends to be the human condition everyone puts everyone else in camps and most do it to themselves.

Well, I honestly think anime elitists are irritating, but from my perspective as long as they're not being directly harmful or rude to me specifically (unironically of course), i generally won't complain. Do I think they are irritating? Certainly. Do I give too much of a fuck most of the time? Not really.

The same goes with music tastes. Sure, I can appreciate music when it's full of deep messages reflecting society and current issues, but doesn't mean I can't enjoy the simple party song with nonsense meaning everyone's been into every now and then.

Things would be a lot better if everyone chose what they actually like over appearances and categories. Why are people afraid of saying they like silly stuff if they admit they like something different first or vice versa. People are been dishonest with themselves to appease others that don't even really care (unless you're on the internet where everyone really really cares what you like and will grill you for been inconsistent) I see people who pretend they hate something or even miss like a film premier or a music concert because they don't want to be seen admitting they like it.

I mean I love films like Glengarry Glen ross, American beauty and to some that should mean I couldn't possibly enjoy something like Armageddon or Face off but I love those movies.

As for music I love the classical stuff even Opera but I also love freaking Kanye west. So maybe I just like been confusing.

Because the topic is made by Comic_Sans. I find him a generally disagreeable person.

Here's a TLDR for you: anti-elitists attack forums! Discuss.
