THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
Quite a talky episode...

We get a bit of info dump on the way their world is divided with the various factions and alliances. Also a nice way of info dumping the timeline. The episode felt kinda funny, mainly because of Aina working on the corn field. Definitely not something I'd expect from her lol

Not much action but whatever. I consider this more as a buildup and character focus especially with Mikazuki and Aina.

Pretty good episode for information. Mikazuki showing a softer side but also showing his insane side too given how he started choking that dude. Next episode's gonna be bloodshed. Looks like we're gonna see some space battles too.

Todo's a bastard.

One of the things that makes Iron-Blooded Orphans different from the rest up to this point is that the usual Princess - Pilot dynamic is reversed: in traditional Gundam shows with said dynamic, the pilot is ignorant of the world's affairs or has a distorted subjective view of it, and the princess is the one who slowly shapes him through their interactions, whether it be Heero Yuy - Relena, Kira - Lacus, Setsuna - Marina, Banagher - Audrey etc.

In Mika and Kudelia's case though, it's Kudelia who's slowly learning more about the world as it's explained via Mika, and the best thing is that Mika does it without being condescending or being arrogant on his part: he has none of the self-righteousness that the other "princess" characters may have had the situation been reversed, he just lays it out cleanly and plainly. And here, where he shows her exactly why her worries aren't quite as grand as it seems, it's nice to see that beneath that killer veneer, Mika actually is quite thoughtful.

It's also nice to confirm that Mika did know that Atra made him that bracelet, and that he's thankful for it. Out of all the "stoic" Gundam leads we've had so far, Mika so far is hands down the best of them in terms of characterization: he doesn't angst needlessly, has a good head on his shoulders, and isn't afraid to show kindness when necessary, but at the same time he's also the most pragmatically brutal of the stoic leads. Sorry Setsuna, but there are people more Gundam than you now =P

Episode went by in a flash yet again despite not much action and the budget was clearly on a save mode. Some nice talk between Aina and Mikazuki, then the interesting confrontation between the mysterious men dressed in blue and Mikazuki. A pretty hype moment towards the end, now they have the classic Gundam spaceship and their journey towards Earth (I think that's their plan) shall begin!

We got some information about the geopolitics of Earth in this episode too. North and South Americas are a single coalition, same with Africa and EU. Oceania is a one final coalition in the east.

I'm really liking Mikazuki's character now. He's clearly worthy of piloting a Gundam, being an elite child soldier, but also lacks that boring emotionless aspect of so many "emo" mech pilots as shown when he had his talk with Aina and even bothered to smile, even if just briefly.

This episode reminded me of Gundam 00

Did not expect we would see something like this so soon. No hesitation on subduing the purple hair dude. More world building this episode showing the economy on Mars. Hopefully that traitor guy would not succeed.

Can't wait to see the Barbatos with that new blue shoulder armor and in space.

Awesome it looks like next episode we head into space! This episode put the final pieces together in setting up the story. We get to see just how destitute the situation is on Mars, if the princess accurately said the fair price they are getting absurdly ripped off. No wonder there is independence movement.

I am totally in love with the opening and endings.

With the pacing would not surprise me if the story arc spans over too a second season.

The one mistake that they made was not accompanying todo while he was conducting negotiations. It could be their naivety regarding the business side of running their organization I suppose. I really liked that they and Gjallahorn crossed paths, it was a pretty intense little moment and you could see Fareed was just analyzing them like crazy.

On a side note did anyone else notice how much the princess towers over mika? For that reason alone I don't think their relationship will develop into anything but close friends.

Generally there's no good and bad guys in Gundam, just people fighting for their side. The villains are normally commanders, so if anyone is a villain for now it's the commander for the mars Gjallarhorn branch.

I'm so glad someone already made this gif. Far-away models like this are actually very common in animation (you can't have your background characters as detailed as the foreground, it would look cluttered), good thing they made Atra's so adorable.

Why do the ladies keep blushing around Mika though? I'm a bit tired of the "blushing whenever your crush says anything to you" trope.

Yup, I'm really enjoying Mika's character. He's not a stock emo protagonist and acts refreshingly normal around people he knows.

I'm wondering about his sudden aggression. Biscuit's grandma implied it may be not something he can truly control, and his eyes were animated in a way that just screams "not himself". Is it the system's fault, or maybe foreshadowing of something else?...

I think it's just Mika having a very short fuse when it comes to seeing those he cares about get hurt.

Which is actually telling of his character: we've seen him angry at Gjallarhorn when they were under attack, and we've seen him displeased at being patronized. But to see him actually become mighty pissed off to the point of madness just because he thought Cookie and Cracker had been hurt says a whole lot more about what he thinks about those two.

The girls getting hurt was surely the trigger here, but notice how Mika didn' react to anything, even Cookie and Cracker's explanation, until he was touched by Sakura-chan. And how he acted a bit confused after this.
Maybe I'm reading too much into it, but it seems to hint at something unnatural.

It's nice to see Mika actually has character. His conversation with Kudelia was nice. Some people were comparing him to Inaho's robot like nature. He has more emotions than that and this ep showed that. Still Brutal as usual almost killing Galileo.

WTF tho, Calling the old lady Sakura-chan O_o That's a first in my entire anime watching life lol

Fareed is seeming awesome. Loving his character a lot He's definitely gonna be the masked antagonist in S2 isn't he :P

Atra's really cute but KudeliaxMika ship <3

Big Belly guy is up to no good <_< Hope he gets REKT. And Nobliss isn't the guy from the OP. He seems shady AF to add. Not looking good. Can't wait for space battles tho. Gonna be good.

Quite a few derps this ep :/

PS...I read that part during minute 12 or so. It has quite a lot of nice info about the history of that world

Lol, they're giving us MikaxAtra and MikaxKudelia ship tease so much this eps. I'm rooting for Atra XD Though she seems like the kind of character that has to die to make Mika snaps and goes all berserk.

Another great episode, if a little slow. We got some nice info about the political and economic realities of the world, as well as some splendid character interaction between Mikazuki and Kudelia. We also got to see more of Gjallarhorn. I'm liking Fareed already, and it was great to see Mikazuki flip out and nearly strangle the other guy. Keep being a badass, Mika.

From the looks of the preview I have a feeling we are in for some excitement and action next week, hopefully with better animation than this episode (I suspect they were saving money with this one, but still).

Anyway, this is probably the show I'm most excited about watching every week, and every episode leaves me wanting more.

Fareed looks like a genuine masked man in the making. Let's see... blond, has a side kick in Bauduin, voiced by Sakurai Takahiro, has a 9 year old for fiancee... oops!

This episode had a cut in budget. I don't mind though as long as we get epic mobile suit actions later on (possibly in the next episode going by the preview)

On other note, thanks to Fareed, now we have chocolate cookies and chocolate crackers. :P

In case anyone left the text fly by, we now know that this timeline is called P.D. and have the initial history for it:

P.D. said:

P.D.0001 - The nations of Earth and Mars accept the "Vingó Proclamation" issued by Gjallarhorn. The interplanetary war that has spread destruction through the Earth Sphere and the Outer Sphere comes to an end. This conflict, which has produced more casualties than any in history, is described in the proclamation as the "Calamity War" and is thereafter known by that name.

With the cooperation of Gjallarhorn, Earth is organized into four economic blocs in order to reconstruct the devastated Earth Sphere.

These are the African Union, the Oceanian Federation, SAU, and Arbrau. Earth begins its post-war recovery under this new world order.

P.D.0002 - At the "Malta Conference", the four economic blocs conclude a treaty to divide and rule Mars. At their request, Gjallarhorn dispatches a large force to recreate the Martian governmental structure from scratch.

P.D.0003 - Gjallarhorn redraws Mars's national borders, and each city is placed under the control of one of Earth's economic blocs. The four economic blocs begin wholeheartedly interfering in Martian affairs, and Mars enters a lengthy colonial period.

P.D.0205 - Arbrau's government grants limited autonomy to its Martian territories.

P.D.0208 - The Oceanian Federation also recognizes the autonomy of its Martian territories.

P.D.0236 - Last of all, the African Union also recognizes Martian autonomy. However, as Mars remains subject to harsh economic agreements, it is in fact entering an era of puppet governments.

P.D.0312 - On Mars, a movement begins to protest economic disparities with Earth.

P.D.0314 - In her speech at the "Noachi July Assembly", Kudelia Aina Bernstein calls for economic independence from Earth, and cooperative movements emerge in every city.

I grabbed the political map too in case anyone wants it for reference:

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Other than that delicious dose of worldbuilding (above) for those interested, this series continues to deliver on the character front. If anyone was doubting it before (Jizzy, if you see this, I'm looking at you), I think now it's quite clear that Mika isn't an emotionless character. His callousness and brutality is explained by his background, but he's clearly shown kindness and thoughtfulness as well. Although I wouldn't consider it romantic in nature, I like his developing relationship with Kudelia.

Fareed and Bauduin seem like promising antagonists.

We got a lot of good setup in this episode. I'm stoked that we're headed to space so early on.

Let me get this out of the way.
1. The internet is already having a shipping war between mika and aina or mika and atra.
2. Just because you have the same blood as your older sisters (Anohana and Ano de Natsu) doesn't mean anything iron blood.
3. My man Mika is strong as hell when he's mad
4. The opening is great
5. Todo has a death flag hanging over his head
6. Episode was pretty chill the whole time getting everyone used to the world instead of action
7. Quality dipped to a noticeable amount of level
8. Finally, if cookie, cracker, and atra gets on the ship during the mission I swear to all things that is holy they better not be another euerka seven trio
