(Now I don't mean to be racist or inflammatory in any way. Please don't start an argument.)

I noticed that many anime have perfect, realistic scenery (AnoHana and Kotonoha no Niwa for example). But I have yet to find a character that look Japanese. Why is that? Most characters I know look anime-ish. Are people much harder to draw realistically than scenery?

If you know characters that look realistic, please post their name and pictures of them.

Again, I'm not a native English speaker I might be accidently offensive :) Sorry :/

Kimi ni Todoke looks mostly correct

Kuuchuu Buranko designs most of its characters based on real people, and doesn't deviate much from it. It's a great anime, as well.
The "creepy as hell" anime is Paprika, and it has pretty realistic looking characters as well.

Detective Conan is super big where I'm from (Vietnam). In fact it's what got me into manga and anime. However I don't remember being impressed by the realisticness of the characters :/

First, it is sad when someone asks a perfectly legitimate question, they have to put so many trigger warnings in it. Pathetic world we live in.

The answer is simple. The man who created Japanese Manga, Osamu Tezuka, figured out the same thing that Walt Disney figured out. The best way to appeal to fans is to employ the principles of neoteny; making their characters appear younger. This is why Mickey Mouse, over time, changed so that his eyes became larger and larger.

The classic article on the subject is by Stephen Jay Gould
http://faculty.uca.edu/benw/biol4415/papers/mickey.pdf

Japanese manga and animation has followed Tezuka, they recognized a good thing when they saw it.

I've gotten so used to anime characters being Japanese with their large eyes and small noses that I think the characters who are supposed to be white still look Japanese.

In my opinion Chitanda Eru and Akiyama Mio look fairly Japanese.

Aikaflip, I enjoy your posts and respect your opinions on artwork, I'd be interested to get your take on something; how do you feel about Hisashi Eguchi?

I'm glad you're bringing this up. About a minute after I made my post, I thought, "Why didn't I mention Perfect Blue instead?!" That's a much better example.

Regarding Hisashi Eguchi, I like his style. He tends to add a slight roundness to his character's faces that makes them look more like common people than models. With that said, there's nothing wrong with having a slim or model face, and there's plenty of room for both styles.

Pretty much all of anything set in Japan and the character is meant be Japanese.

I associate character origin by name, or description.
