Mushishi was completely snubbed but Ping Pong won so all is well.
and I think Frozen is just a popularity award since it did incredibly well in Japan.

Sure, the animation is not the best, but when the awards says "animation of the year", animation refers to an animated work, so Ping Pong didn't win just on its animation.

Congrats to Kouki Uchiyama! I fell in love with his voice back in 2008 when he voiced Soul from Soul Eater, and I've been a fan ever since.

It does suck. It's a hipster show.

Err, sorry, the proper term is "Artsy". Another word for trash.

lol, what a bad comment.... just accept that people have different tastes than you, it's totally alright that you hate the show.

+1

I'm glad Ping Pong won the prize, it's the best anime I saw since long. I liked its particular CD 'cause it brought intensity to the action scenes as well as the dramatic ones.

Can someone please explain to me the popularity of Youkai Watch? Like I'm not hating on it or anything, I just don't get why it's so acclaimed in Japan, well above other children's anime.

Also, Frozen isn't that bad. Just because you're not the target demographic (white, American, young female) for something doesn't mean it's objectively bad.

It feels like the early pokemon anime, before ash became immortal.
And the game was made by the same people who did professor layton and Izuma eleven, so it was a guaranteed hit from the start.

I haven't even watch this frozen series. But people need to seriously chill. It doesn't matter if you like it or not. The positive I see that comes from this is that Japan is nice enough to recognize western films as well.

Plus I heard this series is selling great in Japan. I really don't see what's all the fuss is about.

Could all the knee-jerk Frozen hater commenters please point out what animated movie from 2014 was better than Frozen?

Because looking at MAL list of movies from 2014, all of them are either sequels, niche or bad/ average.

I think most of the complaint comes from that it's not made in Japan. Which is really not a big deal especially when the series selling so well in Japan.

Basically all of this, thank you. Except that I was already beyond hyped for Lupin III: Part IV.

Not that I've watched it yet, but maybe the runner-up Stand By Me Doraemon? It did really well, though of course not as well as Frozen did in Japan. It also received a few awards in Japan already (assuming the information is reliable). Or maybe Giovanni's Island, which I haven't seen yet either. Supposedly it's pretty good? But yeah, I bet most people here (like me) who commented on Frozen haven't watched a 2014 anime movie either :P Or maybe they have and just didn't say which movie they think should've won instead.

In Japan, アニメ (anime) is short for アニメーション (animēshon), which is a term that encompasses all things animated. While Westerners have appropriated the term to be exclusive of Japanese productions, the actual meaning remains the same. Thus, Frozen is rightfully considered "anime".

Actually, in terms of substantial technical value, Ping Pong's sakuga is outstanding; MAL users just don't know the difference between artstyle and animation (this is also why people claim Fate has good 'animation' despite UBW only having a handful of good cuts). So even if the award was given based upon technical value alone, it would most likely go to Ping Pong or Space Dandy.

Exactly; the cuts, the flow, the panelling, the overall direction of Ping Pong were really good.

You still fail to provide even a singular example of a better animated movie from 2014, so instead of spouting irrelevant dribble, try to improve your argument and provide an example.

Well people in Japan are crazy over Frozen so it's not really that unexpected. There were times when pixiv ranking was full of Frozen pictures and it sells there like crazy too.
Gotta watch that Ping Pong sometime.

Best Voice Actor: Daisuke Ono (Durarara!!), Kouki Uchiyama (Nisekoi)
Best Music: Hiroyuki Sawano (Shingeki no Kyojin)
Very good. All 3 of them deserve these awards.

I'll take the bait.
-The movies it stole the Oscar from: Kaze Tachinu, Ernest and Celestine.
-Every other movie from Dreamworks in 2014.
-Kaguya-hime no monogatari
-Song of the sea
-Giovanni's no shima

Outside and inside Japan there were way better movies made than Frozen. Not a had task to accomplish.

Princess Kaguya is from 2013. It was just released in Europe and NA in 2014.

Giovanni no Shima has been criticized as a naive politically motivated sympathy grabbing movie. Haven't seen it myself but the rating doesn't imply greatness.

The others I haven't even heard about.

Dreamworks' only mention-worthy release in 2014 was HTTYD 2, which isn't better than Frozen. Not in revenue, and not in critical acclaim.

Are you saying a movie has to be 'great' to better than Frozen? Really? Using MAL's rating system, 'fine' is about what Frozen deserves.

Probably the people giving Tokyo awards haven't either, so I'll forgive you.

If it's a matter of popularity, sure, Frozen wins. Quality-wise (what actually should matter for the award, HTTYD 2 or BH6 (whichever you like) win easily.
