No, no, no! That movie was completely un-Sherlock Holmes-ish. <-- How serious does that make me sound? Haha. But really, the true Sherlock Holmes isn't like that. ;)

As for the pipe, it definitely needs bubbles coming out of it. *Nods*

Oh I see then, then that movie was amazing and should be Sherlock Holmes more but even the real one has more of a aggressive nature. Bubbles should come out of that type to make it go with Victorique's cute nature.

Nice episode and nice series overall, BUT:

Most of the mysteries are too easy to solve. For those who say that no one could have expected from the start that Avril was be a fake... well, yeah, no one could have done it FROM THE START, however it was easy to find out once you started uncovering some truths. I expect a detective like Victorique to use some advanced reasoning in order to uncover that truth, bit by bit. I expect a challenging mystery, that requiers luck AND reasoning to be solved. However, all they actually had to do was find the real Avril. Which was ridiculusly easy, since Kujo heard her calling for help. After all, if you hear someone calling for help... well, as Victorique said, go and offer your help. Is there anyone who wouldn't do that, and instead would flee in fear of, say, a ghost(wait, Kujo actually did that).

In short, just because something happens that you didn't initially expect doesn't mean that it is difficult to predict following a logic path. A mystery is not just solved with the initial clues -you use them to find more clues and then you solve the mystery. And if you do that, all the mysteries in Gosick are actually quite easy to solve.

That, or Umineko has ruined my ability to enjoy mysteries that can actually be solved :)

People tend to forget that Victorica have a supernatural power.. thats why she solves all the cases so easily.

I really hope this supernatural power will be blocked or useless so we can have some real mysteries that are not solved in 2 seconds lol

I'd say it's possible without this "supernatural power" of hers. I'm not even sure if it's actually there, or if it's just her way of speaking, etc.
Sure, she's gotta have one hell of a brain to put everything together, but it is possible at least. (And if we put it this way, she could be really smart, while everyone else in the series is a nutcase.)
Besides, I'm in denial, the can't be completely ignoring Knox's, if so they should just remove the whole 'mystery' theme.
Yes, Iisan-kun. I'm bringing up the whole thing with Knox yet again.

I'm learning to judge this show less on its mystery, and more on just how
enjoyable the character interactions are. The overly superstitious student body
and their legends were put to good use in this mini-arc. If anything bothered
me it was that Kujo doubted for a moment that Victorique was real, and that he
had to be saved by her. I know he had iron knuckles when he tussled with the
British psychopath, but he still should have been able to freaking defend
himself from an injured girl. Seeing the antagonist taken out by a stack of
books thrown by Victorique was just awkward, comical and unnecessary. Other
than that, not bad.

so how come Kujo can't fight back againts our girl Fake Avril

so in episode 3, Kujo manage to put some brawl againts Ned, but you can see that he is definitely overpowered when they started fighting on the deck

but my god, he had been given a choke using two hands, have you ever watched a martial arts fight, the main reason why many players tap out is because of those choke submission moves, no matter how strong you are, if started to feel difficulty in breathing, most of your bodies energy will be alloted for that purpose, so how come Kujo cannot fight back, because his only a kid and he's not some shounen superguys out there.

so basically we have two kinds of viewers here, those that like it "spoon fed" and those that can literally think for themselves and do their homework. and those spoon fed guys likes it to be a full narrative explanation where every part of the deduction need to be explained because they can't comprehend it and in the end saying it is far fetched, a lucky guess, and unbelievable. and seriously this guys have never seen Sherlock Holmes w/c is what GOSICK is famously based into.

Oh look, deduction based on...nothing. Why does it reminds me of this show? Seriously, the sole reason why Gosick isn't working for me most of the time is because I have read a lot of Doyle's works. Now, you explained two of her recent deductions but I really want to see your explanation of the wire-case last episode. Why did the murder had to be a woman or a child? How did seeing the blond murder lead Kujou to fantasize about his dream girl being blond? Those still make no sense whatsoever.

Exactlly. I found myself rolling my eyes frequently during the past two episodes. The problem this time wasn't really that it's far-fetched and unbelievable, but that there are no alternatives presented. Victorique says it's a blond girl, so it's a blond girl. But why couldn't it have been a wimpy man? Or an old man? Or some hunk who wanted the police to think that it was someone weak? Or just someone who just kinda likes wires and beheadings?

Kujou could have just seen a retriever dog from the corner of his eyes and start thinking about blond hair. Or subconciously smelled a flower which reminded him of that shampoo that blond girl he once knew used to use.. there could be tons of explanations why he started thinking about girlfriends. Actually, hormones would be the most likely. Deducting that it was a blond girl has just no basis whatsoever.

Her deductions are solely based on one idea, while the actual Sherlock Holmes bases his deductions one more than just one factor. He really solves puzzles. Victorique on the other hand just presents just one random solution which could be the possible explanation. And then everyone goes "oooh" and that's it, case solved.

Also, I find some of the goings-on highly illogical. No explanation for the whole stamp thing (who, when, how), and why did the fake Avril hide the book with the postcard still inside, and then she goes and even gives Kujou frigging hints where it is? Ok, that was all about the ghost stories and trying to keeo people away from certain places, but man, it was still bloody obvious. And stupid.

I seem to be the only person who thought Avril might be a fake when I first saw her. She just acted too confident and too in your face. I suspected Avril Bradley never even existed or that she took the place of real Avril, either by force or not. Either way I figured Gosick is the kind of show that could try to do something with her identity. Heck, I didn't even rule out her being the bike killer because Gosick can be just that ridiculous at times.

I hope there's more to Grevil than meets the eye.

Victorica is starting to annoy me more and more. Lit that pipe please, darn it. The animation sequence before wellspring of wisdom makes me go !@#$%^. Victorica just pulls a possible solution out of... somewhere and it miraculously turns out to be the truth! Good detective plots always present different solutions; it's not a single road to the truth, solving a mystery requires examining information, deduction and choosing the correct path. Gosick on the other hand presents a mystery and then dumps the solution (which isn't really a solution, just a possible guess) on the viewer because Victorica is cute and awesome and who cares about mysteries anyway.

The mysteries suffer from:
- short span
- ridiculousness
- plot holes
- not enough clues, directly linked to incredibly short exposition
- little logic
- partial evidence, often by witness report (since when witnesses are reliable?) => solution. Nothing in between.
The viewer isn't given the chance to get the exact solution. They can only create a matrix of possible solutions, based on where the evidence seems suspicious or suggests something and where further investigation is necessary. But Victorica doesn't need confirmations, she can guess the right solution right away. :/
The only "mystery" I didn't get at least in 51% was that mummy knight bullsh*t. While it is possible that the armor itself could be propped against the door, it is 100% impossible that that dude died there while leaning on that door. He would have passed out and fell on the floor or at least slumped against the door. He wouldn't have the strength to remain standing. Gosh.

Haha  same like Shinku. Treat him as a servant.
And the ( coincidence) reference as knight, same like last part in Träumend lyric:
“I don’t believe in knight on white horse” but is black this time.
I like moment when Kujo keep teasing her( and he even doesn’t realize that! )

How can I make this signature appear automatically below that black line? Write in my profile please.
There is like 2 weeks delay in my recent reading list
I randomly bought discount/second hand manga with cute/mysterious cover.

Hmm. Kujo is getting a little annoying. He's kinda getting lame.

Called the fact that Avril isn't really Avril!

Really glad that there wasn't a love triangle. I woulda quit then and there; that's the last thing this show needs. I'm not too worried about the "real" Avril, even though there IS plenty of room for one to develop now.
Sheesh, why couldn't the director just have made Avril a guy for once?! Every anime nowadays is doing this!

I can't help but argue with the above statements. Upon close inspection, this show's "mysteries" are too easily solved, yes, but I don't think that Gosic is trying to convince the watcher(s) that it fits well into the mystery genera. It's more about the "golden fairy" and the wolf thing, but Gosic's taking quite awhile to get to that point...

The viewer isn't given the chance to get the exact solution. Completely agree, except that it's not 100% that the body/armor would have slumped on the floor and not against the door. Maybe 90 or 80%.

This anime is actually really good. The crimes are solved a bit too quickly for my liking though.

A fact about the Penny Black mentioned in this episode, it's not that rare even today so especially in that time, it would have been worth peanuts. My great grandpa owned a Penny Black and a Red Penny Black which was a misprint and supposedly only one sheet of stamps were made and circulated.
Pirates are evil? The Marines are righteous? These terms have always changed throughout the course of history! Kids who have never seen peace and kids who have never seen war have different values! Those who stand at the top determine what's wrong and what's right! This very place is neutral ground! Justice will prevail, you say? But of course it will! Whoever wins this war becomes justice!

The only thing I like now about this anime is the artwork, is pretty realistic especially the backgrounds.
But I admit that at first, before starting Gosick, I was expecting darker atmospheres and a more complex script.

Until now I only witnessed 2 bland cases where every piece could be solved from the very beginning, withouth Victorique's Well of Wisdom need.
Kujo's a decent character, but he does way too many "EeeeeeeH?" and "Victorique!" for my ears, he get me on my nerves.

By the way, Kujo has fought with a 2 meters height man in the ship getting away from it, but he can't stand a girl trying to strangle him?
Moreover tha same girl who had to cut a man's head with an iron wire from far away because she was afraid of straight fight.

But I wanted to see her falling from the stairs instead of Kujo's face.

Victorique's cute as always, I'd like to hug her so badly.
But stop stating that you're bored, I already know it.

Weird. I expected there to be some kind of bridge between the blonde haired killer and the faux Avril, but there didn't appear to be one. The previous episode led to the belief that the two mysteries were connected, but apparently they weren't. Huh.

And what more, was it even explained why Millie was so attached to Maxim she wanted him to die with her?
