Welp , their current project will require some teamwork.

Really fitting music though for the holidays, especially Christmas. Santa where
I think the action flick anime they made was kinda cool to watch though; at least in terms of creativity. Decent episode overall.

The way Onoue (the pale white-haired guy with the phone in the beginning) was talking to NGE's director sounded like he sent Miyamori to him for something very different other than animation-related work. Read the dialogues again and you'll know what I mean. :p

Sugie-san was the real MVP this episode! Musani would've been in a big pinch without his help.

That Andes Chucky opening song though.. Can't believe Miyamori would take a liking to some kiddish show. XD

Decent Christmas episode. I wonder what their next project would be since Exodus is basically done.

Really enjoyed all their passion that was shown as they talked about some past works and also on drawing too.

Sugie being able to connect with everyone, his experience to be able to estimate on all the frames!

Glad they finished the last episode, couldn't stop smiling as they were sort of crying.

They did an interesting job portraying Anno Hideaki-san. Who knew that Sugie had so many hidden abilities stashed away. The rush to deliver the final episode still felt very ravaging though. Hopefully Kinoshita-kantoku has learned his lesson about meeting certain deadlines, and about the staff he's working with.

Sugie is my favourite side character. His presence really narrowed down the generational gap between new and old key animators. He's got quite the fanbase growing there in Musani.

In the raw version, there was a legal disclaimer that flashed across the bottom
of the screen from 02:20 to 02:25. That was the scene were Aoi was standing
outside the door of Kanno-san's home (菅野光明). During their meeting, you could
see that Kanno has an extremely-detailed model of a World-War-II-era submarine
in a glass case just behind his sofa.

What the legal disclaimer said was:
この物語はフィクションです。実在の人物‧団体‧地名とは一切関係ありません。
Kono monogatari wa fikushon desu. Jitsuzai no jinbutsu ‧ dantai ‧ chimei to wa issai kankei arimasen.

I think this roughly means, "This is a work of fiction. There is no relationship to
any real person, organization or place."

This legal disclaimer normally always appears at the end of Hollywood movies.
However, I am fairly sure that I have never ever seen it shown in an anime
episode. However, "Haruhi" fans may recall Haruhi Suzumiya reading this out at
the end of the movie that they showed at the culture festival.

So, why the disclaimer? After all of the chaos following the copyright issue with
Episode 6, there was a rumor floating around that Ichiro Itano (板野一郎), who
worked on the 1980 anime series "Space Runaway Ideon" (伝説巨神イデオン,
Densetsu Kyojin Ideon), was furious to see a fictional animator appear in the
episode by the name of "Saburo Kitano" (北野三郎) who appeared to be a parody
of Itano-san.

This rumor was reported in this December 17th Japanese-language article:
http://garema.jp/newsDetail/6326/

My guess is that, following the legal debacle of Episode 6, the staff is now
being extremely careful to avoid getting sued again.

My next question is, why does this legal disclaimer not appear in the subbed
version?

- - - - - - - - - -

Hachikirra asked:
I wonder if anno himself voiced the kanno guy in this episode.

No. The voice performer for Kanno-san was Shouto Kashii (樫井笙人). He voiced
Manami's grandfather in OreImo.

I think it was mentioned that this was their first anime project in 7 years, probably after the disaster of Jiggly Jiggly Heaven. With that in mind, I assume that the staff must've been determined to prove that the studio can produce a quality-made anime and restore their reputation.

On another note, the bear FINALLY had got successful on his 12th attempt! =D

Don't just cut of old people just because there style isn't in anymore and they got a bit slower, their experience and knowledge is still something you can rely on.
And it can be very valuable especially for young employees who are still learning the job.

While your theory certainly is possible, I would like to think that this time it was a joke. It was SO obvious that the character was based on a real person (Anno, errrr I mean Kanno) that putting that disclaimer at that time made it like a self-referential bit of comedy.

And Merry Christmas was saved for Musashino Animation :)

Is it me or Anno likes his AVA series more than the movies? Not that I will object, but was kind of curious how the question raised some sort of distinction b/w knowing anime and being familiar with a series.

You know, I was sure Suigie-san was a hidden hand grenade. He was trying to help Ema with the cat drawings, she got stuck with few episodes back, without intruding himself.
That is, there are young animators who probably struggle as Ema did, and crave to learn more, draw better, support their projects with more skills. On the other hand, the mind blowing hectic work isn't a thing for elderly professionals, yet they could give a lot more with a little accommodation and consideration.

Still don't know which anime Andes Chucky stands for, probably have never seen it, but its OP fit amazingly the winter holidays. Happy holidays, MA/PA :)

Great episode!

It was gritty how that they had to rush. It was fun and at the same time tense seeing all the Musani animators work hard fast to finish it on time. And when it was finally done, I feel like rejoicing and crying at the same time. Sugie-san is awesome. I think the new animators needs to learn from him and he needs to pass down all this experience and knowledge to the new ones.

Also. General Manager blushing. How cute and we finally see the goth-loli girl once again.

I wonder what's next for Musani?

I do like this idea that the "legal disclaimer" was just fourth-wall humor. On the other
hand, I have never seen a case where text (or anything else) appeared on the screen
in the raw version but had completely disappeared after it got subbed.

In any case, they certainly seemed to be extremely respectful in the way that they
portrayed the real-life Anno.

So just like a lot of people guessed last week, Sugie comes in to save the day.

The 2 most important things to take away from this episode:

1: The girl finally took the bear's love letter in the ED.

2: We now know the name of the anime is based off of the title of Exodus' 13th episode.

Ooh so that's what Shirobako means..

Man, this anime is great! I was as tense as the staffs and was just as happy when the whole thing turned out all right. I think we can all learn to be kinder to studios when it comes to bad animation especially if it's a difficult scene. Very often things that were only shown for a few seconds on the scene or on the background are the hardest things to do. We often take for granted things like those, like the animation of a hundred horses because unless you've worked as an animator it's difficult to comprehend the difficulty of creating realistic animal movements. This is true for 3D animation too since whatever the medium, the principles applied are still the same. I once spent a few days just getting the animation of baby chick to look good. It's really a lot easier to animate humans since we're all used to it.

Daang that horse chasing scene was insane! I'm so glad we got to see it ^^ Props to the amazing "Legendary Sugie-san," he really has some legendary skills that weren't fully utilized at all. I like how everyone had so much to learn from Sugie, and how much they wanted to learn from him. It was also great to see much effort the animators had to put in to study horses. And of course, their efforts paid off! The scene itself is still kind of ridiculous, but who cares because the animation is beautiful haha. Really liked the camera work in that scene. So happy to see Exodus being able to end without a problem unlike Kinoshita's previous work. I really liked feeling as if I was part of the team, or as if I was there with Musani, since we watched 12 weeks of Shirobako alongside of them creating their one cour show. Twas a stressful and intense 12 weeks to say the least XD

Hopefully we get to see more of the Aoi's other friends~ (Also, liking that title drop at the end there.)

It is just my random guess but Andes Chucky the anime Miyamori loved when she was a kid is, "Rocky Chuck, the Mountain Rat" (The English title was Fables of the Green Forest) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fables_of_the_Green_Forest (1973)

The opening song is here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fr5Lu3eQGMc
The way of singing the opening song is somewhat similar each other.

Also, the old titles of the animes Kanno referred to as Sugie's old works ("Brown-haired Anne" and "The Adventure if Sanba") were
Anne of Green Gables http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anne_of_Green_Gables_%28anime%29 (1979)
and Ganba no Bōken http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ganba_no_B%C5%8Dken (1975).

So, Sugie is really a forgotten legend who once established the golden age of Japanese animation in 1970's. It was a bit sad thing that most of young people working for the anime industry now weren't born yet when they were broadcasted and there weren't video recorders or DVD players those days.

Sugie sees himself as a kind of old dog that can't learn new tricks and always acts modestly and politely to everyone, so most of young staff didn't have an idea that he was the living legend.

The guy solo key-animated that kids show's whole opening for just a week, remember? The title "a living legend" isn't really that far-fetched imo and besides, it's extremely really rare to find animators these days that could animate cuts that fast but still has the consistency.

To that horse part scene, Toshiyoki Inoue (a close friend of PA Works' president and one of the most influential KA in real life), was given a special credit for that particular scene in the ED so there are these speculations that Sugie might be the show's Inoue animated version. I'm not completely sure though, might be wrong.

Here are Inoue's other animation works -> http://sakuga.yshi.org/post?tags=toshiyuki_inoue
