A great and truly emotional episode overall.

Some huge revelations about Orihara and Henmi's past, I gotta admit that I kinda sensed something related those two because of how Orihara always tried to avoid Henmi, but I didn't expect for her to have breast cancer, I though she had a heart surgery or something!

I really really hope no more deaths happen in the last 3 episodes... It'd be too much depressing (T_T)

Yeah, I didn't realize she had cancer either. Honestly I didn't even connect the dots until you mentioned it.

That said, I just didn't feel this episode. I'm not really sure why.

That scene in the rain was pretty bad. This is the cheesy soap opera this melodramatic series had so nicely avoided becoming. It's one of the only times in this series where the use of still images comes off as cheap rather than a stylistic choice. It also badly fails at making the bland Henmi interesting, which is something he needs to be, at least a little, to play half of a love story.

It's been so long since it teased at a connection between Kaoru and Henmi that I had totally forgotten about it. I can't imagine what it would be like to watch it only once a week and have this suddenly come back.

I guess it's just because this is shoujo, but I find it pretty weird for a guy in college to be dating a first-year high-school girl.

I didn't see that coming at all. I thought Kaoru had heart surgery and that maybe Henmi was just someone she had unrequited love for. I didn't think it was mutual :o

This is getting worse every episode. I don't see why Henmi is so interesting and how come Nanako is looking all over the place for her if Shinobuu cares for her just as much.
idk why I was here but I'm prob back to playing Hunt: Showdown 1896 again when you read this

Korean soap operas got nothing on this.

Didn't expect Kaoru to have gotten a mastectomy. I thought she had heart surgery, or some sort of flesh eating infection.

Yeah, thought she had heart problems as well, so I thought maybe she had some nasty scar she was ashamed off. But breast cancer? Damn.

Wait, what? That came out of nowhere (and I'm not talking about the cancer).

I'm getting tired of this, glad it's gonna be over soon...

^I don't think any of this came out of nowhere.

Nice play there leading me into thinking it was a heart problem.

Though it was weird when she bled that one time she was hit but I figured she had open heart surgery that had left a healing scar or something.

You all are right, our dear brother isn't all that interesting. Though I don't dislike him.
If he were an anime key visual he'd be that sole guy in the very back/corner of the poster while the 5 girls are front and center with their boobs and their ass right in our faces.

The worst storyline. It seems like at the beginning they'd decided to make a Rei/Kaoru line, but then SUDDENLY changed their mind to the more 'normal' relationship. At the end all yuri disappeared and died out. xD Anyway, I like Kaoru. The only one intelligent person there (despite her love to Henmi).

I remembered Kaoru had breast cancer from manga, but now that I'm thinking about it, I'm pretty sure this illness doesn't work exactly that way. So there is relapse within 5 years and then absolutely no chance for surviving? Ah, dunno, maybe it worked that way in the seventies, when manga came out.

Anyway, I hoped they'd add more details to this arc in anime, considering this happened with every single previous storyline in this series. I don't really like that they have left it and epilogue for the last 4 episodes, that doesn't seem enough :<

I don't even mind the Kaoru/Henmi thing as much as a lot of you guys, I mean he seems like a cool enough guy and he's of some comfort to Kaoru. And all I want from this show is for Kaoru to be happy somehow!

That being said, the OTP for this show will always be Kaoru/Rei.

(Also yeah, their breakup scene was a bit strange. Kaoru was always a more subdued character so it was odd to see her being so melodramatic)

There's nothing wrong with Henmi/Kaoru love. Straight love but love, so what. We got hints from way way back, not shocking in any way.
Henmi is a very very decent guy. Back when he had his monologue about his childhood and family situation, it's one of the highlight of the first 10eps.
Man, growing up alone and into this decent person, that's something.
(Though I'd love Henmi and Takashi together, Takashi emotional on the balcony is his best moment yet)

There's sth about the phone booth, which of course is no longer used now, that's nostalghic and sad. One has to be alone to be inside the booth, and what's more, in a rainy night.
One single glassy phone booth with a pale light, amid the blackness of the evening and muffled sound of rain. That's like an island, oasis. Like protected from disaster but bleak and lonely and stranded anyway. Gotta find one and go there in a storm.
A place we've not gone to for a long long time (for whatever reasons), but is connected and a fragment of our past. We all have one right? We all go there from time to time, when we feel sad.

The way they arranged frame so that the firefly swarm look positively like a river (remind me of Mushishi and its river of light), right in the middle of the frame, flowing. River or sky lanterns rising for Rei's death and their lost love?
Ah yeah, come here from Utena. The carrousel!

She was held back a year because of her diseases, but I found it a bit weird too.

So Henmi visited Rei, but never Fukiko? Ever since the Soririty abolition arc started the show's been slowly going downhill for me.

I don't know why so many are surprised by Kaoru's relationship with Henmi. I had already figured out that there was something between them and even a possible breakup back in the episode Kaoru said she that she would forget it all and how much she loved that person.

As for her illness I always thought it was something relating to the heart or lungs wasn't expecting this.

I have to admit that this arc is my least favorite... It's really gross that the relationship between Kaoru, who is seventeen and still in high school, and Henmi, who is a college/grad student, is completely romanticized.

Hold on Kaoru and Henmi were a couple, this really came as a surprise since I thought it was one sided love like Miya but also explains why she didn't went with Nanako and the rest to the college festival thingy. Poor Kaoru dealing with breast cancer, the loss of a best friend and also not being able to stay with the guy she loves (because of the cancer) at such a young age.

Must be extremely rare for a high-school student to have a partial mastectomy, right?? Orihara is so young. I can't believe she ripped off her yukata in front of Henmi lmao I had no idea what was happening or what she was showing him since we had no idea what her illness really was. Its interesting that it was cancer, since its not an illness that we often see portrayed in anime. I liked how secretive Orihara was about it, and I really appreciated this episode. Orihara is by far my favourite character in this series

How old are Henmi and Ichinomiya? Around 24? It was said he started college 6 years ago when Fukiko had a flashack about meeting Henmi. So 23 year old dating a 14 year old, that's creepy even for '70s.

And it's indeed breast cancer :/ (you could figure it out during the basketball match)

These episodes have been "emotionally draining" in a good way. Been a while since I've seen an anime that was so heavy.

Everytime there's Kaoru back story I get so excited. She's one of the more solid, and one of my fav characters in this series. Her illness (cancer?) potentially coming back and being fatal is so heart breaking, it's clear that she broke up with Henmi to protect their love instead of potentially hurting him further if she did pass away. This show hits me in the feels so much... DAMN

I've been hoping Kaoru's feeling for Henmi were never reciprocated but nope at least this episode focused on her mourning and the revelation that she have breast cancer (I assumed that it was heart related before) and being able to let it out.

I'm going to have the balls and say it. This is honestly one of the worst romances I've read. No way they set up the deep relationships of women, and even ship tease them, only to make it a heteronormative ending. There's just no way...

I can't believe that the person who made romance in Rose of Versailles, actually made this hot mess. Like, Rose of Versailles had straight ships, but they wrap it up so well that it's very heartwarming. Even if you recognize the flaws of the individual, you still do respect their romance. Their romance also makes sense and it's built up throughout the show.

Kaoru x Henmi is a fucking random hot ass mess, that literally showed no chemistry. Why the fuck is this a ship? Mariko x Miya's brother is a ship because... Why??? Mariko clearly had a crush on Kaoru. What's next? Nanako gains a crush on some random guy that's she's never met before either??? Will it be that cheesy ass "love at first sight" to justify lack of development?

Like, how TF do you go from Rose of Versailles, to this?

So, Kaoru had breast cancer? What a young age to have to deal with such a thing, and there's a possibility that it could come back? It's so sad. :(

She and Henmi love each other, but she believes that they can't be together because she had a mastectomy? Henmi can live with that, so why can't Kaoru?

I actually love the friendship between Rei and Kaoru, they clearly had something special there, which didn't have to be romantic for it to still be a deep bond.

Kaoru/Henmi is a bit out of nowhere. Not because I didn't see it coming, there were hints, just the pair itself does seem quite bland. Or there simply weren't enough moments to make it more appealing.

As I understood, the reason behind the break up was more to do with Kaoru letting him go, so that he doesn't have to experience loss once she dies. Very in character for her selfless nature, but sad nevertheless. I wish she allowed herself to live to the fullest even if it's a limited time, and also allowed Henmi to make his own choices in that regard...

Big brother is likely written to represent an audience that Nanako is telling her story, but since he is also a love interest passively driving the entire plot by just being his usual Gary Stu self, he ACTIVELY needs some actual depth, not just being the perfect male everyone gets interested by after seeing him just once. Ok, smart, handsome and charismatic guy with sad family issues is one thing, but those qualities alone don't make him as appealing. The guy is just there to make others shine, but Nanako is doing the same thing x1000 times better while being even more plain looking??? It's fairly obvious that an author is a woman since most guys even in ''Rose of Versailles'' are one dimensional or plain disgusting, whether it's done on purpose or not. Yes, WOMEN😍😍😍moments are appreciated, but since you've decided to write romance, adding more substance to men part of relationship won't hurt.
I hate everyone equally
