I don't think that it will be a repeat of what happened in the past... that's just wrong for a story.

But then... if the todas are let loose, then I really don't know how they can be stopped without the Ohju, which would cause everything to repeat all over again. And the whistles won't work, either, will they? Toudas have special [thingies] to replace their earflaps, right?

Ahh, finally someone set Semiyah straight! Was afraid for a moment that she wasn't going to listen to reason. Excited to see what happens, yet at the same time I'm sad there is only three episodes left...

Sometimes I wonder if I'm watching the same show from episode 1. Comparing the Erin now to the one who bonded with her mom and hung out with Jone stirs feelings of nostalgia. Seeing her development is one of the things I appreciate about this series. I like how Erin seems fully confident in her beliefs now. She's talking to Nason and Seimiya like it's no one's business.

This episode was good for information. Erin helps sum everything up for viewers (the masked men, Damiya's involvement) through talking to Seimiya. Maybe it's because I haven't watched an episode in awhile, but there were some parts I chuckled to (out of disgust / humor): when Damiya said Seimiya wouldn't be calling him "uncle" soon (yeah, soon she'll call him an 'incestuous bastard'), Nason's confession of how he's been watching Erin every single day (he needs a new hobby), and when Erin climbed off Lilan at the bath (I don't remember seeing her climb off Lilan like that before).

I'm also glad Erin aggressively tackled Nason in their discussion. He could have saved Soyon (with his skills-- though I guess Soyon may have been mortally wounded among other things), like she implied when speaking generally of his tribe ("you use codes as an excuse to let people die in front of you and restrict beasts").

I also wonder what Seimiya is planning to do… hopefully she's not feeling self-sacrificial. It looks like the masked men are with her next episode, so I'm not sure what that's about. Things are getting exciting :).

You know, even though I disagree with Erin's conclusions and decisions, I totally see where she's coming from, and I like how she is working with the hand she is dealt. This is a remarkable character that's probably going to end up on my favorites list once SS completes the series.

I exactly thought the same thing as Erin when she came across Nason: why would you only watch if you can save lifes? I'm glad that Seimiya granted Erin her the freedom to only appear and nothing more. Indeed, the part how she got off Lilan was pretty entertaining... I guess it's because of her hand, as I can't remember that she flew on Lilan after the bite-event (or I'm simply forgetting things). I have to say that Erin was sitting pretty cool near Seimiya. If there wasn't either sound or subs, you could have thought that there was... ah, never mind, the weird things of subliminal messages got to me.

I can't say I agree with Erin at all times, but I do know that she got her wisdom and stoicism because of her trauma. She sure changed a lot since the beginning of the series and she is actually a person of think first, do later. She ought to take better care of her life.

Seems like we'll have a fight (either verbal or with swords) between Ial and Shunan and Shunan with Ngan, probably. I'm really curious how they're going to end it and put a lot of deciding things in the next episode.

I disagree. Erin is a totally impulsive character. The difference is that she thinks about the consequences of her actions and accepts what has happened to her. If Erin were the type of girl to think before doing, then she wouldn't have been in any of this mess (even being in the Queen's Quarter) to begin with. It's very weird. I definitely feel like Erin has grown and developed as a character, but she continues to make (in essence) the same mistakes over and over again. I suppose because the sakes/penalties become higher as she makes each transgression, I don't really mind. She's very human.

@ noteDhero

If you look at it from one perspective, Erin's behaviour throughout the series (and I agree with you about her being impusive btw, but part of maturity is accepting the consequences of ones actions, and the show really highlights how different her attitude is now as opposed to when she was a child), is a metaphor for Nason's argument about humans repeating the same mistakes over and over.

The flaw with Nason's argument is that it doesn't acknowledge any capacity for change, growth or adaptation, and it doesn't allow humanity to accept responsibility for it's own actions.

I don't think it's so much a metaphor as it is a justification. And I kind of disagree about it not allowing humanity to accept responsibility for it's own actions. On the one hand beast-lords aren't all massacred, and on the other, people aren't given the freedom to fail. I think it's similar to the way that we as humans spay, neuter, de-claw, etc. animals and/or put them in zoos. The part about not accepting consequences has more to do with not owning up to the past and a lack of self-regulation, such as the Mist people just idly watching.

All that aside, I totally agree that Erin has greatly matured.

Ah, maybe I phrased that incorrectly (or incompletely). What I meant was that the society had become stunted because the mist people and the royal family had withheld the truth from the populace, and by doing so they effectively shackled the people into a kind of socio-evolutionary stasis. After all, one has to be aware of their mistakes before one can work to correct them.

Ironically enough, you could apply Nason's argument to nukes as well.

I did like the fact that the imperatives were purposely introduced, but even more than that I liked the fact that there were the odd few people who instinctively rebelled against the so called "norms", as this made the world more realistic.

Oh, and have you noticed the symbolism in Erin's name? "Wild Apple" - the forbidden fruit from the tree of knowledge. I was mulling it over earlier and the name is highly appropriate I feel (I even added a bit about it to my review).

Hmm...now that you mention it, I think this could be a really great allegory for nuclear disarmament. I really like that idea.

And yes, the show manages to mention what her name means every 8 or so episodes, so became hard not drawing conclusions about it after a while.

Despite the lack of action in the episode, I really liked the episode. It was a little hard to believe that Seimiya just accepted what Erin was saying, though. If she's that willing to accept the truth, it makes me wonder whether, somewhere in the back of her mind, she was subconsciously suspecting Damiya of plotting. Then again, watching the flashbacks of her and Damiya makes me highly doubt that. She has lived a totally sheltered life, although that's no excuse for her actions. I would've agreed with Shunan that a Queen who doesn't open her eyes and see the good and the bad bits and pieces of her kingdom doesn't deserve to rule.

I, too, have a bad feeling about what she's going to do. I hope that feeling is just misguided and turns out to be totally wrong.

Wow, I loved this episode. I love how Erin is never backs down from a challenge and is honest with her feelings. I love how she confronts Nah-Son and accuses him of just watching everything pass by and never lifting a finger. He just accepts that people are sinners and will never change instead of forming his own opinions and taking action. He continues to bind both beasts and humans with threats and words. I had to rewatch that scene three times because it was just that powerful for me.

This episode has really shown how Erin has matured. It shows how observant she is, how she thinks and comes to her own conclusions, and isn't afraid to share and act on them. While her actions don't always come out right, she accepts the consequences and continues to move forward. I didn't always agree with her actions during the series (I sometimes felt she was too impulsive), but I appreciated her gusto, how she accepted the consequences, and continued to live by her personal convictions. She is a strong person, and is one of the most admirable anime characters I've come across. She's definitely made it on my list of favorites.

I also love her confrontation with Seimiyah. Wow, gorgeous episode. One of the best yet!

The first part is plausible on both side, so I won't rant on you for that.

The queen is taking this with a grain of salt, she still in position to switch side in the last moment.

Me, too.

I've been wondering about the analogy of nuclear weapons for some episodes. Glad to see I wasn't alone.
Your mean should be an even bell curve only if you watch every show that comes out. Having a high-slung mean doesn't mean you're rating improperly. It can also mean you're selecting shows well to watch mostly things you enjoy.

Oh so Nassan showed up again spouting his codes and watching and doing nothing. You know what, take your rules of being non-responsible and go back to doing what you do best, which is watching people die and doing NOTHING. He doesn't piss me off as much as Damiya, but he's up there.

As for the revelations to Seimiya, I think Damiya will have something to say about that.

And lastly....IT STILL DOESN'T BOTHER HER THAT SHE IS MARRYING HER OLDER UNCLE?!?! She's what 16?!?!?!?!?

IS NO ONE CREEPED OUT BY THIS?!

I think the part about a person being able to control one of the Beast lords of legend as the legendary founder Je says, is the important part. I'm surprised that she didn't bow down immediately to display her awe towards this almost god like being that is able to ride upon a Beast-lord.

Great episode! I loved how Erin was able to sneak out at night with Lilan, and how no one noticed it. And then there was the unpleasant encounter with Nason, I don't want to be harsh with someone that is just doing what he thinks that's right, but seriously? "Return to our clan", a bit late, don't you think? But Erin was really straightforward, and said why she wouldn't go with him. How could she follow someone that all this time was just watching? Someone hiding behind codes, and possible catastrophes in order to rationalize letting people die, and enslaving beasts like Erin said. It's too much, and by this point I don't have much, if any, sympathy for the mist folk. They just gave up from the start, they didn't look for another way, they just blindly followed a code, and restricted people, Erin feels strongly about this for all the suffering she was able to feel coming from her mother even though she was young.

And then Seimiya, who accepted Damiya's proposal, but was still unsure if this was the right thing to do, and this is when Erin got to her. The vision of such a majestic Beast-Lord being rode by a human just like in the tales certainly left a impression! But it can be hard to accept the truth when it's not something you would like to hear. But Seimiya was way more understanding than I expected, she really gave a chance for Erin to speak instead of writing everything off as simple lies. She was surprisingly sharp too, noticing Ial's name on the harp, but at the same time naive, thinking that a man that used his body as a shield to protect her grandmother would betray his code.

But Erin stood her ground even when she was being doubted. She told Seimiya all that she could: her reasons for raising Lilan like this, the true history behind the country, and linked it to the existence of the Beast-Lord Imperatives, which backed up her claims. And also about what were Harumiya's true feelings on the matter, and Damiya's vile schemes, like how he's holding her teacher, and others as hostages, or the way he tried to get rid of Ial for knowing too much.

I liked how Lilan's existence, and even Erin's lost fingers helped her, like they were proofs of her sincerity, or of the way she just doesn't want to see the Beast-Lords being confined to cages or turned into tools of war. I also loved how Erin said to Seimiya, who was still a bit too attached to "gods", how they weren't the ones responsible for their meeting, but that hateful person that dragged her into this. I still think that she could've told her a bit more, like the reason why her grandmother didn't know about the truth behind the country, and stuff. But I think it worked, and that's what matters. I can't wait to see what Seimiya will do, having realized that she's pretty much like a chained Beast-Lord herself, and how Damiya is going to retaliate.
