Nooo, Sayla-san, why!? Throughout this episode I was getting frustrated with her erratic actions and then they go and reveal her feelings for Char. Its a nice development, but its also a bit abrupt as in the previous episodes they didnt show her coming to this realisation about him. It could have been handled better with just a few scenes here and there of her interacting with him, or just staring at him even, but we hardly got anything like that, just that one scene on Side Seven.

I also liked the focus on salt. As expected of this pioneering show, they had the skill to focus on something that seems so trivial on the surface and yet imperative for a crew of a ship to survive on. Even today's shows barely scratch the surface of what it takes to run a ship, so I'm glad Gundam looks at the details.

SixtyDeuce's subbed version floats around via torrents and Emule. Its the only subbed version out there I think.

Nyoron is releasing a remastered version, but they're only 10 or so episodes in.

Sayla really ticked me off. It seemed kinda selfish to me...dangering the operation like that just for her own needs :/

Oh, and as for the fansubs...I watched nyoro~n for eps 1-10, because that's all they have released, and now switched to sixtydeuce for the rest. The remastered version (nyoro~n's) is like honestly no different, the only difference I really noticed was the screen size, which is just a bit smaller on the remastered. Nyoro~n seems to be taking quite a long time anyway, so you're better off just going with sixtydeuce.

The last 3 episodes are still subbed though. Dunno who they're subbed by though, the torrent description for the torrent I downloaded said that they're just by an unknown subber, but they have been subbed.

Well... it's true that you need sodium (and potassium and cholride) to survive, but all of those things are pretty easy to find in food without table salt. I'm kind of curious whether the director of the series didn't know this, or if it was just assumed in the late 70's that you'll die without table salt.

Or is there some fact that I'm missing? Is there a reason why White Base wouldn't have any meat, or peanut butter, or cheese, or butter?

Maybe they had none of that, who knows. o_O I would hope they had it onboard but I think all I saw was like bread and lettuce. I didn't get a really good look tho, but for the most part I saw bread and very basic food. Maybe they were low on just about everything and the easiest way to get sodium is from salt soooo.

And here I was thinking this was another pointless episode until Saila dropped the bomb (not really a bomb, since I had my suspicions).

Still, I hope the plot moves away from this nonsense of the last couple of episodes...

Damn, looking for salt + Sayla-san leaving kitchen = one hell of an epic battle.

I agree with Beatnik that Sayla realizing that Char is her bro could have been handled in a better way. It just came out of left field all of a sudden.

So let me get this straight, they go to a salt lake to find salt and they find it evaporated and leave. NO, the salt is still there idiots, Salt doesn't evaporate.

Sayla really can't pilot the Gundamn, I am calling BS, Amuro could do it without any experience.

Yup, Sayla noticing Char as her brother now feels really strange. They should've mentioned it around the earlier episodes right after they actually met.

They sure could have handled the brother-sister thing much better. They haven't even showed Char in the past episodes~ I miss him...

In her defence, Amuro didn't really fare much better in his first pilot sortie. I would say he moved around far more awkwardly. He was fighting against people who weren't expecting to fight a mobile suit.

Sayla was fighting people who would have been training to fight against mobile suits.

Plus she is a women. And this is the 70s.

Oh, did you miss the part where she says that piloting is not the same as the simulation? If you ask me, having trained in simulators should be far better than reading how to pilot from a book on the spot if you ask me.
And yeah, she suddenly remembering Char and concluding that he was her brother was completely random. Did she just suddenly remember him after what, 15 episodes?

Yeah, Sayla realizing Char was her brother was indeed awkwardly handled. It could have used some foreshadowing here and there...anything instead of this. Not to mention her stealing the Gundam was kind of out of character....but then again it's not like we see her enough to get a real good feel for her character either. I think this is Tomino's ineptness at characterization reering it's ugly head.

Though at least Char and Amuro have turned out pretty well.

Aah, so finally they decided to do something with Sayla&Char brother-sister relationship. Too bad that Sayla stealing Gundam was unexpected and without any kind of foreshadowing. I wasn't even sure if she remember him anymore...

Sayla did pretty good piloting in hard contitions (desert) against pretty experienced pilots. I wondet if all mobile suits have same kind of basic controls or do they just happen to have custom Gundam simulator in White Base.

Well if you ask me, Sayla's 'performance' this episode only further confirms the pervasive 'girls can't fight like boys' mentality that has been present throughout the whole show until now.
You hype up a character to be so cool-headed and strong-willed and when she's actually given the chance to shine, you make her act out of character, irrational and on top of that you make her fuck up so bad, just to get saved by God-sent Amuro?
I call BS on this.

Plus, just like mitamaking said, she's been practicing with simulations and stuff and still got her ass handed to her while Amuro was able to hold his own again Char fucking Aznable with no practize at all and having barely read the manual.
Besides that, what about the Gundam's ability to learn from previous battles? Amuro already faced Ramba Ral once, so Sayla should have been at the very least able not to get her ass kicked around by everyone and their mom.

That was painful to watch. Hoping Mirai doesn't get the same treatment.

Great Episode

But yeah they could have handle the revelations that Sayla realized that Char is her brother.

Like meeting Char again on battle and Sayla realizing it is indeed her brother. That would have made more sense tbh.

Making her know Char is her brother out of the blue is not how you do it Tomino-san :P

Lol Sayla's excuse is because she wanted to prove that a woman can fight in a gundam as well.

Funny thing is that she never showed any interest on piloting the Gundam in the first place.

It definitely weird how Sayla's character can change so quickly.

Amuro should have killed that Zaku pilot. Never trust a Zeon scumbag!!!

Though i do love the realistic take and emphasizing on meals before battle. Frau must really care about Amuro!! It makes the show realistic!!

And Salt really?? of all the things they would risk to get, it's salt.

People probably believe not eating salt would get you killed even though you only need a very small amount for your daily needs.

But eh it's the 1980s so i don't really mind ^^

Can't wait for the next episode!!! No more playing around this time Sayla!!!

These fucker's are eating bread all the fucking time so unless the cook actually makes the bread then the salt shortage wouldn't have been problem at al (glad that i wasn't only one pointing this out)l and who the fuck stores food on the outer part of the shit where it can be damaged? (do we see nuke going off on the next episode because it was stored right next to the motors"

Funny also how the Gundam suddenly started to get easily damaged when woman was piloting it.

And like said the characterization on this episode was bad. It sad how much the quality of this show has went down during the past few episodes.

Amuro proves to be a champion, anything can drive to pull the best there is in it, it looks like Tazio Nuvolari. This is one of the elements that come out carefully watching the episode, the other has to do with the character of Sayla, its link with Char is not a speculation but a certainty based on the facts. Quite addictive action seen in this episode. Our heroes are increasingly embroiled in the war that pits the Earth Federation and the Principality of Zeon.

I really liked this episode, and I actually liked how it handled Sayla's actions. While we learn at the end of the episode why she did what she did, the audience was forced to take the perspective of the rest of the crew. It just looked like she sorta went crazy there and wanted to prove herself or something. The cool thing about portraying her like this is that she still feels like part of the crew even though she did an action that put the crew in danger. If we knew about her struggle, it would feel like she was ready to actively betray White Base, which it doesn't seem like at all.

I think any viewer can gain appreciation of why she would want to know what happened to Char given the circumstances. While her actions were very extreme they look like it was the only course that had the chance of giving her answers quickly.

I also have to give props to Amuro for piloting that Guncannon extremely well this episode.

She been depicted as the one of the more level headed characters and out of no were she think she can handle a state of the art mobile suit! In a real life or death fight. THE FUCK!

I know Amuro did the same but he got plot armor.

The chef and his salt was hilarious. Sayla is the dumbest character in the show by far. She thought since she did a Gundam simulation she'd be fine and "prove" to the men that women can fight just as good as men, when Bright said of course they're the same at fighting, but not compared to Amuro! Someone who actually knows how to pilot it!!! She wasn't qualified. Char's my favorite character and I'm sad to say that one of the main characters (Sayla) is my least favorite...

Something that I think some people in this thread missed is that the reason for taking the Gundam that Sayla told Bright was a complete fabrication. Her real reason was to get into contact with a Zeon soldier to ask about Char. Sayla didn't want to divulge her true motive, so she made up the "girl power" excuse to hide her intentions.

I didn't love this episode for the reasons that have been stated above. But still, I am less harsh on Sayla's execution, she met Char face to face in the beginning and has been sitting on it since. We weren't able to see her thoughts so her acting reckless like this puts us in the same shoes as the crew as Phaetons_Folly points out! We can even chop up the uncharacteristic recklessness as a character trait, recklessness when it comes to familiar love. Hell, it may show that when push comes to shove, she's as much of a loose cannon for her goals as her brother is.

That said, I still found it awkward as hell!!! If we got more hints that this was coming, it'd feel less unsatisfyingly abrupt. Good thing this episode had other things to be interested in.

A salt shortage to continue a theme of realism, fitting with the catapult always being a rollercoaster, sleeping, drinking and eating being focused on as necessities on screen, ammo count or fuel being crucial to combat, and a myriad of other things.

Further, Ramba Ral and this new shady captain man make another enemy duo which will surely have some beef like Char and Garma did, and a hostage is on board. It's some set up for what's to come, I'd imagine.
