Sports anime is home to Ro-Kyu-Bu!

Pretty sure that's the only sports anime I have watched.

What do you mean by that?

I mean in terms of offering the widest variety of emotions, from sorrow to joy, excitement to being awestruck, they are not as strong as some other genres, but still do well for what they are.

I watch very few of them. Sport isn't really my thing, be it real life or anime (martial arts are an exception), and I don't really enjoy them. Besides the "nakama power" is strong with sport anime and that is not something I usually enjoy.

As much as I like sports anime, this is actually one of my problems with most of them. Which is why Chihayafuru is one of my favorite shows of all time. If the main characters are not as strong as their opponents, plot armor will NOT save them from losing. In fact, they've spent most of the show losing despite how focused their training regiment has been.

I am a big fan of American Football, but disliked Eyeshield 21. I hope someone gives this sport a "Giant Killing" kind of realistic treatment. Way too many tricksters in Eyeshield 21 to the point where it did not seem like I was watching a football based anime.

Jun Misugi can die any minute on the soccer field (heart disease) in Captain Tsubasa.

Major has one character dying from an injury.

Characters from Ashita no Joe and Hajime no Ippo risk their lives on the ring.

If you understand the basics of baseball watch One Outs. There is no "nakama power" in it what so ever and the protagonist is vile and cunning like a snake, sort of like a hybrid of Hisoka and Lelouch.

I think he's more like a hybrid between Light Yagami and Hisoka. He's a lot more ruthless than Lelouch is, and doesn't give a shit about his team.

Darker doesn't always imply that it's meaningful. Also, there are plenty of sports anime with a meaning to it. Sports anime usually carry on themes of hard work, friendship (if it's a team sport) and perseverance among many others. Try out something like Hajime no Ippo if you want to see the story of a boy who grew through boxing or Cross Game, which I've heard has a great romance subplot along with the baseball (I haven't seen Cross Game so I might be wrong).

My favourite genre is music but I tend to like/love most sports series. Sports also make me cry the easiest. Any sports anime (even ones that score only a 6/10 from me) can probably make me tear up, even more than the "feels" trio (AnoHana, Clannad, A-Beats) Also, sports anime do character development the best. Strong examples include Chihayafuru, Ookiku, Major, Haikyuu, Kuroko no Basuke.

But yeah, I really like them. ^.^

Fucking love sports anime, some of the GOAT have come from this genre: Ippo, Slam Dunk, Touch, Major etc. etc.

Still waiting on the definitive Football anime though. There are great baseball, boxing & basketball anime but no football. No soccer either, not that I think about it. Giant Killing was close though.

My favorites include Ookiku Furikabutte, Hikyuu!!, Kuroko no Basket, Hajime no Ippo, Ginga e Kickoff!!, Hungry Heart: Wild Striker, Major, and Free! It always makes me happy to see a new sports anime on the upcoming anime list.

(Coming from a person apathetic to every sport, basketball the hated exception)

Saw Prince of Tennis: hated it.

Watched Chihayafuru: lovelovelove.

Watched Oofuri: total indoctrination. If my health wasn't so crap, I'd be out swinging a bat. Now anticipates this year's real-life Summer Koushien. <3

Now: ALL the Sports Anime. 2013-2014 is a great time to be a fan. :D

Can't get into the super-powered unrealistic stuff, but shows that try to remain as true to the sport as possible really get to me. Must be the love and dedication translates onscreen.

Also, they're really great at raising your spirits IRL. The camederie and team spirit (where applicable) inspire good feelings toward mankind, and make me want to be a better person. Get stuff done. Have dreams. Work hard.

Nothing like a good sports anime.

Is Yowamushi Pedal really that good?

First episode crap, but it slowly builds into something awesome. Just about all the characters are endearing in their own way, esp. otaku protagonist. After-credit short skits are god-tier.

Also: includes one of the creepiest characters outside of an action shounen. Every moment on-screen is NOPE, so great. <3

Camaraderie can be so uplifting, as well as competitiveness and friendship blossoming over the love of a given sport or activity. Captain Tsubasa.

Major

True, so I'll clarify. I meant the absence of combat situations which would normally entail mutilation, severe injury, and death; yet merely results in minor flesh wounds and KOs in order to keep the show kid-friendly, the hero alive, and the protagonist clear of fault.

A lot of sport anime is very formulaic.

The few that arnt are the current Ping Pong, Cross game (or any other Adachi series, which actually all follow Adachi's standard formulas), and perhaps Eye Shield 21 (simply because how funny it is, it still has many of the normal sports anime formulas).

For most sport anime, once you watched Slam Dunk, you have seen the lot.

Ping Pong is such a breathe of fresh air to sport anime genre, i mean it actually has real characters that have actual personalities and weaknesses and depth and interest. rather then the standard shounen sport protag, whos about as fleshed out as a cardboard box

I think TYM is a good example of how sports anime can deliver so much more. In that series in particular, the baseball was a means for a greater end and I like the message it delivered.

@ OP -

There's this misconception that "why watch sports anime when you can watch sports", but sports anime are able to deliver so much more in the way of storytelling and character growth. Also the majority of spectator and player commentary/internal dialogue contributes to the experience and furthers along the matches.

I became a believer when Kuroko no Basket first started airing. I really wasn't into sports prior but I love how adrenaline pumping and exciting they can be, more so than run of the mill death matches in other shows. They also play a huge role in motivating me when I work out. Back in 2012, I would constantly enter Kagami Taiga's mindset of "challenge the impossible with the desire to win" and that helped trigger serious momentum during my spring/summer training.

But sports can also deliver so much more than the sports themselves. Major is a great example of how it can fit in some serious SOL moments that have made me think twice about certain aspects of my life and how to improve them. Easily one of my top genres now and I even get the urge to start playing some of the sports, especially the ones I played when I was younger (baseball, basketball, soccer).

Certainly had a change of heart when it comes to sports anime. Marathoned the shit out of cross game a week ago. It wasn't necessarily the portrayal of the sport that I liked (I thought it was okay at best), but it was more of an attachment to the characters and following their journey of overcoming adversity.
