Come on, guys. Califa standing there? As far as I know, she tried a cutting attack from which Nami got saved by miraculously having her leg washed and being able to run. And a shigan that failed miserably because, uh, Nami's skin is so slippery. It's not that she isn't trying to finish the combat, but her control of the ability and what it means (which of his previous abilities can she combine with her bubble attack and which not) is still very basic. Which is what is saving Nami. And well, the fact she is such a fast thinker.

This fight is a refreshing one after hundreds of Gomu Gomu no Bazuukas and Santoryus that end always in the same way. Just saying.

It seems that every time I look at these discussion posts no one is ever happy. The fillers are bad, you want more action, then the action you get isn't good enough, someone is hogging the screen, the fight should be done with already...blah, blah, blah. Everyone is entitled to an opinion but do you people actually like One Piece?

I thought the warm up to Luffy's fight with Lucci was great and Nami's new moves are really working for her. I like how she had to think, that not every weakness is obvious to her and she actually has to struggle and forge on to win her battle, that she doesn't need to be saved all the time. Not only is she an excellent navigator but she's really earning her place as part of the crew with her fighting style. I just wish Usopp would hurry up and get stronger.

Yeah, don't get me wrong, I've hated some episodes which I thought were a drag (mainly in Skypiea) but out of the nearly 300 I've watched so far, that would account for about 6-8% of the episodes, otherwise I freaking love One Piece.

Kalifa has had so many chances to just finger pistol Nami in the face. Is she afraid of getting her hand dirty? Shouldn't be a problem, seeing how she's pretty much soap.

This is probably the best Nami fight. I recall the Paula fight being lackluster. The Sotori and Hotori fight being obnoxious. This one is pretty great even though I don't like Khalifa's power too much. I love the variety to it. It's a really dynamic fight that started with Sanji. Moved to Nami. And was interfered with by Chopper. For the variety of the fight alone, I think it stands out. Further, Khalifa's less than perfect plans and execution of her powers are evident through her fighting. She got these powers like today, she wouldn't realize that when soapy her finger pistol would slide off Nami. She wouldn't have a perfect plan to be efficient using her power as can be seen with how she covers her opponents in strength stealing bubbles but then kicks the bubbles off them as she doesn't know a better way to approach it. There's a lack of mastery here that you can compare with excellent fighters like Blueno who utilized their devil fruit power in a far less obtuse, and more natural way. It's really cool to see a strong opponent who isn't a master at their devil fruit power, the fact that Khalifa is so new to it and so arrogant is what's giving Nami a chance and I love that. It's a fight that shows off Nami's badass tomboyish side, her strong resolve, quick thinking and sass to a tee even if a lot of the fight is singular moves being separated by talking or evading. I guess I'm saying I think the fights handcrafted to bring the best out of Nami in a combat situation for the first time ever. And, Khalifa is really likable too! I can't quite get a hold on her personality but her tsundere side when she's ignored is adorable and I love how she extracts the best side of Nami out of her.

Now, enough raving about how good that was. That was half of the episode, and while it did rock, the first half kinda blew. However, the way it blew was something I'm glad for because it taught me something about myself. I normally consider myself someone who doesn't care about pretty art and animation. Something about the first half of the episode really bothered me though and I have some examples of it.
Stills, not in-betweens, but stills lasting for numerous seconds looked more awful than usual. For example here:

For art, there is a clear inconsistency here. The fact that the art was so unapologetic numerous times, more times than this I'll have you know, was too noticeable to ignore. It took me out of it. Normally I wouldn't care too much but, alas, the animation was also quite seriously awful the first half of the episode.

What this all said to me was that I don't care about pretty colors, but I do care about efficiency and suspension of disbelief which ends up leaning heavily on the consistency of art, and animation. I can love and do love Saint Seiyas animation and Berserk(1997)'s animation which is mostly stills and a lot of tween looking animation, but it is true to that and it works that animation to make it effective and powerful. One Piece normally looks okay to really good depending on the episode and this unimpactful and poor tween-esque, non flowing movement or awkward art and animation that takes you out of the moment whether you like it or not weirdly enough made me dislike the first half of the episode, especially because not too much happened in it so those elements were things I had to focus on more than I'd like to.
I think the animation did clean up and the art did as well in the second half and this clip in particuilar actually reminded me of Saint Seiya by being a still, being simple, but being really powerful and good.

To make this post a sandwich I think I'll end with a brief good point. I think Luffy/Zoro, or Usopp/Chopper or Zoro/Sanji or even Nami/Luffy are easy picks for some of the best relationships between the Straw Hats, however, I think Zoro/Usopp is one of my favorites. This fight has ought to be a bonding experience for them and having Zoro show his understanding of Usopp by pumping him up as a great sword and naming the attack after something appearingly prideful was really charming. I love the ways Zoro shows that he understands and cares about Usopp even if they're on the more subtle side. All I want is more out of Usopp's side in this dynamic and maybe it's there and I just need to focus on it more.

The more I see Spandam beating Robin up, my bottomless hatred for him grows. Her pained cries for her friends was really sad.

It looks like Chopper's keen on showing his new form to as many of his friends as possible~ I hope that he'll end up helping them like how he accidentally showed Nami the one way to undo the Golden Bubbles more than harming them. I think that Kalifa's bathtub crashing down on Sanji helped him get out of his soapy form.

Luffy and Zoro's (with the renowned sword Nose Storm) getting on with their fights but the climax for their matches has yet to come. Nami's doing really well against Kalifa. Go get her, girl!

Sanji's dawdling has long been overdue! Isn't it about time he's back to normal already? He could've helped Zoro and Usopp!

She got him back. If you understand the characters well enough, you'd know she did!

Plenty of Nami this episode which is never a bad thing xD I usually enjoy her fights because, like Ussop, she has to use her brain rather than just brute force.

Looks like Sanji will be back in action soon, thanks to Chopper throwing that bathtub on him.

Nami really owes Usopp for creating that weapon. It’s absolutely peak. Idk how they going to get chopper under control though

But man do I hate Spandam for all the beating he done to Robin. Probably the character I hate most in the show

Out of all the Nami fights I’ve seen so far? This is definitely the best we have so far. It helps that the fight wasn’t initially her fight with Kalifa it was Sanji’s until the latter herself used her new Devil Fruit powers on him which we now have a switch of fighters with Nami, changing the dynamic completely and now we literally have monster Chopper smashing through the walls to basically distract Kalifa unintentionally may I add but still adding a layer to this fight altogether.

Compared to fighters say Blueno where he uses his Devil Fruit powers naturally, I get the sense that Kalifa plus Kaku are literally people who have just received their powers and they have no mastery of them. And really does play into Kalifa’s arrogance thinking she can win the fight easily but does not mean Kalifa is a pushover of an opponent, no not really. I really do love the comments that Nami says towards her which were highlights for me personally.

Obviously I know Luffy’s fight is gonna be the last fight to finish so his battle with Lucci is gonna be quite long regardless the warm up for it was pretty good. Otherwise this was pretty much Nami’s episode, showcasing her new moves with the Clima-Tact, her basically using her brain to figure out how she’s going to proceed with the fight and honestly she’s come a long way since her fight with Miss Doublefinger in Alabasta. So much growth since then. Otherwise this was great episode overall.
