Anime you appreciated more after the sequel

Apologies if this kind of thread exists, searched the seven seas and saw nothing.

Sometimes I'll come across anime that, even though I did like or enjoy, didn't find particularly special or compelling. Then I'll proceed to watch the sequel and be blown away by it. After some time, I'll look back on the first season or prequel and start to see things about it in a new light and appreciate it more so than I did when I watched it initially.

For example Clannad and Clannad After Story (spoilers for both) -

Aria the Animation, Aria the Natural, and Aria the OVA (spoilers for all 3) -

Ookiku Furikabutte S1 + S2 (spoilers for both) -

What are some sequels that made you see the predecessors differently (in a positive sense)? What about them caused you to like the prequel more? How much did your score change for the prequel as a result (if at all)?

Please do not list and use spoiler tags when necessary.

IMO I still don't like Clannad s1 even if ~AS~ had it's moments.

Chihayafuru season 2 made me like season 1 even more... LOL

Railgun S blow the first season entirely. Though I still rate the two 8.

Kami Nomi season 2 is better than the first because i have less filler and it's the first time that Keima develop. And I really like Chihiro arc.
Kickstarter for Rokujouma is fully funded. Good work everyone. Lets wait for the result of our hard work together.

This is not a sequel, it's a remake, that's meant to be a more faithful adaptation of the manga.

@topic: Baka and Test season 2 was really good because of how much further it developed the main characters, Minami in particular. I also liked season 2 of Higurashi a lot, I don't know if I'd say I liked it more than season 1 because it didn't have as much emphasis on horror, but I liked how it actually made the plot cohesive and shed light on a lot of confusing things in the first season. Similarly I liked the increased emphasis on character development on season 2 of Hell Girl, but I didn't quite like it as much as season 1 because it didn't have
and they were the two best characters in my opinion.

Exactly the same case as you OP. I have to say I enojyed The Natural a little bit more than The Origination.

I find it so funny that he thinks FMA:B is the only remake among the things I quoted.

Well, if he knew all the three anime i quoted were remakes, he wouldnt complain about my joke.

Hidamari Sketch
The first season was only slightly better than things I'd seen like it, but after watching x365 and Hoshimittsu, I realized that I'd discovered one of the most under-appreciated masterpieces of all time.

Clannad
The first season wasn't bad by any means, nor was it anything amazing. It was just above average. But after watching After Story, I felt a deep connection to the series, since I could relate to poor ole Tomoya's suffering and I saw how realistically it depicted loss and one's reaction to it.

Note: Am I the only one who's had a whole paragraph typed up then it ended up lost because I got logged out? So freaking annoying...

Without a doubt Clannad: After Story, the only reason the first season is there is for the sequel.

Dragon Ball Z a remake? Ok...
5 main aspects I base my ratings on:
1. Did DramaEnthusiast make a thread about it?
2. Is it better than Breaking Bad?
3. Did MellowJello recommend the shit out of it?
4. Has it caused a (very entertaining) shitstorm on MAL?
5. Is it actually good?

Scratch the fifth point, it's not very relevant...

^ And this.

Where is your Haruhi avatar , hmmm?
Where?

Anyway , nope , I have only a reverse situation where the sequel is less ...... attractive than the previous and that anime is called Haganai.
The first season was fun , the second one was just full of ....... it was like a soap opera , while it was entertaining and it gave more romance it went a little off-track . "Oh noes , I knew him before you , and I'm his .........." . I'm not giving spoilers anyway.
I'll stop here because going further would mean inevitable giving spoilers and even with tags I still feel guilty because some will still push the shiny button.

While it's not a sequel, One Piece's later episodes(480+) made me appreciate the earlier episodes.

Naruto Shippuden because it made me realize the difference between them, appreciate what I liked in Naruto more, Naruto growing, the fillers, etc.

That's all I can think of right now.

I definitely agree on One Piece. I took the earlier episodes for granted when I started and it wasn't until I got into the late 300s/early 400s that I started to really feel just how well they complimented the series. For example (full One Piece Spoilers) -

Also I'm seeing Higurashi a good deal. I thought that was certainly another one where Kai made me appreciate the meaning behind season 1's cryptic story even more. Although I didn't like the direction Kai took at the end, so it made me appreciate S1 for other reasons too. But that's another story.

Yuru Yuri. I liked the first season from the first episode, but afterward it started to get a little dull and aggravating.

I wouldn't have minded the constant abuse heaped on Akari if it was funnier and less predictable. And I like Kyouko, but she can be a bit overbearing, so having the entire first season focused so much on her got irritating.

Then season 2 came and changed everything. More focus on the other characters (though some might feel it focused too much on Sakurako and Himawari) more subtle, refreshing humor. When the show did pick on Akari, it was much less easy to see coming. Also, that time travel episode.

I would have to say that DxD New made me appreciate the original.

Anyway, more seriously, probably Darker than Black.
It's natural for a person to deny he's a failure as a human being. That's why he searches for somebody who is more miserable than himself. That's why so much animosity exists on the internet. Those who aren't able to find a more miserable person, turn to the internet and call other people losers, even though they've never met. Just to make themselves feel superior. isn't that pathetic? There's a sense of security that comes from speaking badly of someone else. But that isn't true salvation. — Tatsuhiro Satou

Yeah, definitely Clannad After Story made me appreciate the first series even more. That said, I still liked the first half quite a lot.

Banner of the Stars, especially the Banner II, made me appreciate the series as a whole a lot more. Was a very satisfying experience for me.

When I watched Higurashi first season it really didn't make sense at all, but then the way the second season covered everything made it just amazing, even the plot holes were so damn unexpected.

I actually remember you warning me about season 2 back when I made a poll for what to watch next. I ended up watching it. I didn't think it was completely blasphemy-level awful, but needless to say I could have taken that warning more seriously.

Sora no Otoshimono Forte made me love watching the show even more, the gags just kept getting better. Also the subtle plot development was executed better here than in the previous season

Also, Initial D Fourth Stage since the CGI blended well with the drawings so it was much easier on the eyes. Plus this season imo had the most character development (taking Keisuke Takahashi into account) as well as being the most focused towards racing among all the sequels.

Clannad After Story and Code Geass R2. Both had okay first seasons (8.9 for Clannad, 9.1 for CG R1), and ended up having a miles better second season. After STory ended up being a clean 10.0, and CG R2 ended up being 9.8.
