Just saw it; I liked it!
It was rather fun. It's a little different from the real story in Air itself, but that's unavoidable. They had to take out characters and plots because it had to be in 90 minutes. Also because it's a movie, there might be people who see it the first time.

I think this was one of the best anime movies I have ever seen. The story is different from the Tv series,I would say it's more dramatic. The end is the same, and I also remarked the fact that the characters werw drawn slightly different form the series (In the movie,Yukito had his hair colored purple,Ryuga looks totaly different, and Misuzu's eyes are more round in the movie).

Don't talk to me about character development if Kaizuka Inaho or Slaine Troyard are in your favorites.

I agree with SailorKagome, I prefer Toei Animation's versions of Key's games (Air and Clannad movies over the KyoAni's series). I mean, both are directed by legendary director Osamu Dezaki, and so are more dramatic and seem like works of art instead of just commercial series taken from a famous eroge, even if they have basically the same plots and characters (well not exactly because there are few secondary characters in the movies, which is actually quite good from my point of view). That's the main differences for me between those, and why I like Air and Clannad movie more.

I agree how Toei Key adaptations (minus Kanon) are generally better than that of kyoani's attempts. One of the main reasons for this is that Toei actually focuses the story on the main canonical arc of the Visual Novel. KyoAni approaches an adaptation by balancing out the screen time of ALL the sub-heroines of a VN. Not only does the story feel lacking, but the jumps feel like mini-stories instead of one cohesive story. Of course its only fair to say that KyoAni did what they have to do due to the story needed to produce an entire anime season while all Toei has to do is produce an hour and a half movie.

The main exception to this is Air TV. As much as I loved the anime, even I thought it was way too jumpy at times. They had the opportunity to fully flesh out Misuzu due to the 1cour nature of the show, but they decided to add all the girls for the sake of appeasing the fans (of course I'm not complaining).

Now for the movie!

My main gripe is how the cheesy music and odd camera angles completely ruined some of the pivotal scenes. An example is how they used some cheesy music when it was revealed that Misuzu's sickness is getting worse. Of course the mood they want to portray is that one shock but I just burst out laughing. Then we have the camera angles and I want to use one of the most important scenes in the movie to illustrate my point. The whole Misuzu beach scene...I honestly cried when I saw that on Air TV...but I kind of went wtf when I saw how the scene kept jutting all over the place. Some real good tear jerker scenes and they ruined it...(for me anyway).

Other than that, movie is a great watch and is definitely better than kyoani's attempt due to the focused storyline.

So beautiful. ;_;

The story fit good into these 90 minutes.
The animation wasn't as good as KyoAni but it wasn't bad at all.
I think Yukito looks better in the movie then in the series. D:

Hated it! Yukito was so annoying in here, the story between the two back in the past was so boring, Misuzu was so... unlike her... the story was so full of cliches it made me sick... and the ending was stupid.

Comparing to the anime series, this is trash.

Yukito transfering to Sora was very important... why did they remove that? Also there was no room for the anding with the two kids which was such a good part...

The only thing good that stayed was Misuzu's aunt... I understand why they evaded the 'aunt being actually mother' thing, so I won't work it out... but other than that... HIDOI! T_T

It was great.

Dunno about the experience but I've just seen episodes 1-3 of the TV Series and then watched this movie.

Then, I'm going to watch the remaining episodes of the TV and specials. Kinda spoiled that there will be same endings. Haha! :D

I like both the Air TV series and the Air movie equally, but when it comes to character development for the main characters and better understanding of the story the Air movie is better.

Plus I also like the ending of the movie slightly more than the series.I like the ending of the series it was just as sad as the movie was since the fate of Misuzu is the same in both, but the ending of the movie had Yukito there,he didn't die or get reincarnated as a damn crow, but still just as sad nonetheless.

Awesome movie, I watched the series a few months back then waited to watch this cause I thought watching the movie right after would be gay. I still remember the series barely. Cutting out all the extra characters worked out pretty well for me since I didn't really care for those stories in the series. I really liked the endings in both though.

Wow, this movie felt way rushed and very out of context to the series. Also the little love romance thing going on with Misuzu and Yukito was completely unnecessary. The dad seem to have no part in the movie what so ever. He was pretty useless. The character development was pretty poor in this movie, there was alot of things wrong with this movie in my opinion. The TV series was definitely superior.

Can't quite understand the love of this movie here. It was too one dimensional (the other characters/arcs made the TV more interesting to watch), the emotion shown by the characters is no where near as strong as the TV series, it felt a bit too rushed at times, and the animation was quite inconsistent. If you are doing an adaptation of the VN, then not following what it was showing as a theme (the summer arc, although not greatly executed in the TV series, was of huge importance to the story, as was Sora) is only going to downgrade the quality of it.

Meh, it was okay.
This adaption was crap compared to KyoAni's TV-anime. It was rushed and all the romance just felt unnecessary. Not nearly as emotional as the TV-anime either. Some of the soundtrack felt out of place at a few scenes and I hate Toei's character designs and art - they just spam as much lightning in there as possible.

If I hadn't watched the TV-anime, I would probably have felt very lost during the movie. The parts with Kanna and Ryuuya were not developed at all. And the ending is a lot more powerful in the series.

Oh well, I wasn't expecting much since, imo, Toei completely fucked up Clannad as well.

I surprisingly enjoyed this movie. I liked that the character designs didn't look totally retarded and how they didn't focus too much on the moe bullshit.

And by the way, how is it even possable to screw up Clannad? Did they actually make it good or something?

Well.. I honestly liked the movie more. I like how there was more romance and interaction between characters that fit...

There were moments in the TV series where I was like, "That Character wouldnt say that/do that"...etc

BUT the series has better animation IMO and Yukito turning into Sora (although in the movie it is VERY subtle in implying it... so it's there) was done in the series, I liked that.

Overall, due to it's strengths and weaknesses, I'll give this movie an 8/10, same I did for both Air and Air in Summer. Glad to have stumbled upon this series.

we are all forgetting a very important thing guys. THEY ACTUALLY KISS! Personally, I love Kyoani's animation of it but I love how the movie focuses on Yukito and Misuzu, her advances on Yukito were so cute. And also a Ryuuya and Kanna KISS! The only bit I don't like about the series is the sad ending and the lack of powerful kissing scenes. The movie satisfied the latter but unfortunately, the ending cant be changed.

Do you like or wish for the Otonashi X Tachibana Kanade pairing from Angel Beats? Or just love both characters?

Unlike so many others...

This didn't work for me.

a. Art & Animation

Okay, the style is a matter of taste in the first place. I wasn't too fond of the series' style either, but it was working way better for me than this.
But the most annoying thing was the animation. It simply was sloppy in so many scenes that it made me cringe. It's a movie, goddamnit, why not handle it with due diligence?!

b. Characters

First of all, the TV show made me feel for Misuzu, even though I was not particularly fond of her, but that just shows that it got the job done, and even quite well at that.
But this...
It's been some time since I watched the TV show, so I wasn't too tempted to compare the two, but still, it became obvious that things were left out and that some things were touched upon - but only briefly.

Why put in Sora? He was superfluous in this movie!

The conflict with Misuzu's father at the end. It didn't have any real consequences and felt rushed.

Haruko. I liked her best in the show, but she was just...shallow here, there was no real depth to her. Why cut out the conflict that was so important in characterizing her relationship with Misuzu?
In the movie, she was shown to be caring at the start, and then, in another scene, she only returns home in the evening although Misuzu is sick and is depicted as careless, and the very next scene presents her in yet another light.

All of the characters were acting so inconsistently, but not in a "I've changed!"-way but rather in a "Oh, there was this in the VN, we might touch upon it briefly"-way which didn't make sense in many scenes.
Yukito's sudden changes of mind regarding Misuzu were barely comprehensible.
I just didn't get to care about the characters very much.
Take Kanna and Ryuuya, fore exmaple. Their story was so cheesy and underdeveloped at the same time that I didn't really want to get any more on them than what was already shown; it was too over the top for me.

It felt like they wanted to tell a different story but then threw in bits and pieces of the show which then didn't fit in with the new stuff.
All in all, I somehow also felt like I was watching the show backwards. I don't know.

Just...no.

Just wanted to say that I pretty much agree with everything you stated in your post, Saorin.

While I preferred the art and animation from KyoAni in the TV series, most of it here in the movie was fine. The only thing I didn't care too much for were the manga-like still scenes. Perhaps there were just too many of those, and "less is more" might apply here.

As far as characters/relationships go, the (initially) more distant relationship between Misuzu and Haruko and how that relationship evolves in the TV series evoked more emotion (at least for me) than their relationship in the movie. The romantic relationships between Misuzu and Yukito (as well as Ryuuya and Kanna) also didn't work as well for me compared to the respective, less romantic relationships in the series.

Even with all of the above said, I still enjoyed this movie as an alternate telling of Air. I appreciated some of the little added background scenes, such as seeing Misuzu asking for and receiving her picture book assignment for the summer, or seeing where Misuzu went to school earlier, etc... All I can say is the series evoked deeper emotional connections with the characters for me.

Still, 8/10 for the movie for me.

Series was a lot better but movie was okay. Again everyone seems to think this movie was trash, like the Clannad movie. In pales in comparison to the anime, definetely, but it had some good moments, a couple even better than the series. However the ending in this was downright disappointing. It all went far too quickly and it missed the point of the anime. So, not bad but it could have been better. I kind of like the Clannad movie a bit better because it had a better cast and had more entertaining moments.

I'm not sure why I preferred this over the TV series years ago. This has actually made me appreciate the series much more. I liked how they focused on Misuzu and avoided unnecessary harem side stories, but I felt so many scenes were executed much better in the TV series, especially the resolution with the father. I also felt Kanna and Ryuuya's story was a bit bland and lacking.

I realize they aired around the same time so naturally they would be different interpretations, but I prefer KyoAni's version after all. Originally had this scored at a 9, but reducing it to a 7/10. This has actually made me change my score to Air TV as well, moving that from a 7 to an 8/10.

I too prefer the TV series years ago but after rewatching it again but this time with the movie first then TV, I personally think the movie has done a great job in most parts than tv series. I think this is just a case of what you have seen first, giving it a preference to what you have seen great specifically that last episode of Air. This consequently for one to lose interest with the movie since you know how the story will end and not give it a whole different perspective of what its done great compared to the other. Watching it multiple times and giving it a time gap in between will made you realize that one medium (which is in this case the movie) is not bad after all and can be considered a much superior to the tv series.

People who have high expectation with this series tend to say at the end that it disappoints and somehow confused which to me is understandable given that KyoAni failed at this adaptation. How I just wish Air to have a remake and have much longer episodes if they are going to cover side characters rather than fit it in a 13 episode. There is that mysterious element present in this anime compared to Kanon2006 and Clannad which made its story a bit more enticing than the latter anime. But sadly, this doesn't fully convey to every person who watch this series.

To anyone who will watch this series, please watch the movie instead rather than the tv series. And please don't compare Air tv series to Kanon2006 and Clannad, it's an injustice to the series and I will say it again if you don't understand the story, blame KyoAni. That's how they fail at their first Key series.

I saw the series awhile back and determined the movie is actually better than the series. The pacing and flow of the series is flawed to the point of being boring at times. Though series was deeper, more complex and I kind of respect it more for what it tried to do, coupled with the fact it has a significantly more tragic ending that made the final few episodes downright harrowing, I think that actually works against the series in some ways. The movie was more simple and perhaps less respectable, but that very simpleness allows one to appreciate it for what it is more than the series.

I think all of the extra stuff the series tried to add but didn't fully explore really weighs it down. The puny 2 episode arcs, for example, may serve to achieve a real "ooohhhhh" moment when you begin connecting things together at the end of the series, but they didn't accomplish much except adding extra, needless fluff at the time of watching them. If they would've been more elaborate they would've helped, but they weren't. By cutting all this fluff out, the movie just ends up being more earnest and, because of that, enjoyable.

Like I said, I really respect the series for what it tried to do, but the execution was really subpar. The movie just has much better execution. I will say, however, that I would not love Yukito and Misuzu nearly as much as I do if it wasn't for the series.

I liked that Yukito and Misuzu's relationship was more focused in this version, however I just can't get over what they did to Haruko. She was my favorite character from the series and felt she wasn't really done justice in this version. She fakes hating Misuzu, but after that they never show her rekindle her relationship with her.
