5 | ![]() | 16bit Sensation: Another Layer A lot happening here; subtle and thoughtful. Examines the value of bishoujo anime and its production and the culture war it has spawned with the west. 9 | ![]() | 5-toubun no Hanayome Movie A worthy continuation of the story from the series. Didn't unfold as I'd expected, but I enjoyed it overall. Though I can understand why some reviewers found certain events to be a bit of a let-down. After re-watching the movie, and seeing the two side-story episodes, which apparently should have been viewed before the movie, I've upped my assessment of this. Just finished re-watching both seasons and the film. Overall, very good writing, with solid treatment of the characters and good attention to detail. | 8 | Movie | 1 | Spring 2022 | Bibury Animation Studios | PG-13
10 | ![]() | 5-toubun no Hanayome∽ Second episode is especially good (9). Watched after the movie... probably best to do that, honestly, even though the specials take place before the events of the movie. | 8 | TV Special | 2 | Summer 2023 | Shaft | PG-13

19 | ![]() | AI no Idenshi Explores lots of existential and relational questions. Hitting on themes and movements of other works like Ghost in the Shell, Eve no Jikan, and A.I.: Artificial Intelligence. May need to give it a second viewing to get more out of it though. Hope there's a second season to tie up the loose ends. | 7 | TV | 12 | Summer 2023 | Madhouse | PG-13

23 | ![]() | Akira Mediocre SF. Its historical place cements it in many people's hearts and memories. Not great, not terrible, just meh. There are so many other, better anime SF stories to spend your time on instead, but Akira is worth watching once if only for the cultural context. | 6 | Movie | 1 | Summer 1988 | Tokyo Movie Shinsha | R+
24 | ![]() | Akuyaku Reijou Level 99: Watashi wa Ura-Boss desu ga Maou dewa Arimasen FMC is pretty autistic, and her denseness gets annoying at times, but it's played for humor appropriately. 38 | ![]() | Arifureta Shokugyou de Sekai Saikyou Oof. First impressions: Trash isekai, crap writing, garbage 3DCGI mixed in. After finishing the season: Trash fire, abysmal writing, lifeless 3DCGI. Bleck fest. Still, a bit of humor and cuteness, and a couple cool lines. Not as good as the low bar of Eminence in Shadow, even, sadly. | 3 | TV | 13 | Summer 2019 | asread., White Fox | PG-13
39 | ![]() | Arifureta Shokugyou de Sekai Saikyou 2nd Season Trashy, and the writing is really atrocious. Has some entertaining elements, though, here and there. | 4 | TV | 12 | Winter 2022 | asread., studio MOTHER | PG-13

43 | ![]() | Arknights: Reimei Zensou I hate to say it, but despite some decent animation and action scenes, this one was boring and poorly-written. Its "based on a game" DNA shows. | 4 | TV | 8 | Fall 2022 | Yostar Pictures | PG-13
44 | ![]() | Asagao to Kase-san. | 7 | OVA | 1 | Spring 2018 | Zexcs | PG-13
45 | ![]() | Assault Lily: Bouquet A guilty pleasure... it has heart, but not brian... generally good emotional beats, but the writing is so contrived and terrible that the breaking of the suspension of disbelief somewhat deflates those beats. The only way to enjoy this anime is not to think, which is sad. Oh well. | 5 | TV | 12 | Fall 2020 | Shaft | PG-13
46 | ![]() | Atri: My Dear Moments AI, climate change, some Natsuki (MMC) and Atri (FMC) character development. Seemed a bit underdeveloped, but generally good. | 7 | TV | 13 | Summer 2024 | TROYCA | PG-13

71 | ![]() | Bokutachi no Remake What if we could rewrite our past to correct things, assuage our regrets, make our lives better? Would it be better, truly, even if it seems so? 73 | ![]() | Bokutachi wa Benkyou ga Dekinai We (viewers) never learn, do we? These series usually have the dumbest writing. This one's fairly entertaining, and often funny, but often the characters' plot-induced stupidity and situational plot contrivances distract, and they suck the humor and joy out of what would otherwise be funny parts. One has to shut off one's brain to ignore how clueless the characters are in many ways. Still, it's a halfway decent dumb romance harem anime overall. (Make of that highly qualified statement what you will.) | 6 | TV | 13 | Spring 2019 | Silver, Arvo Animation | PG-13
74 | ![]() | Bokutachi wa Benkyou ga Dekinai! Same as last season - decently entertaining if you don't think too hard. :) Not too much depth here. | 6 | TV | 13 | Fall 2019 | Silver, Arvo Animation | PG-13

79 | ![]() | Bubblegum Crisis Tokyo 2040 (sub and dub) - The sub and dub are markedly different. Primarily female cast / protagonists, and doesn't unfold as expected. [SPOILERS] Somewhat of a Gainax / Sunshine ending.... | 6 | TV | 26 | Fall 1998 | AIC | R
80 | ![]() | Bungou Stray Dogs Generally entertaining but fairly standard shounen posing as seinen. | 6 | TV | 12 | Spring 2016 | Bones | R

82 | ![]() | Bye Bye, Earth Not your ordinary anime. Surreal, existential, philosophical, metaphorical... swords, music, a [spoiler - redacted] god(s), ... bizarre and maybe not highly entertaining, but intriguing. 93 | ![]() | Chobits Main character is hopelessly clueless (typical shounen protagonist), but the show has its sweet moments, and it's got a sweet, romantic opening song. | 7 | TV | 26 | Spring 2002 | Madhouse | PG-13

95 | ![]() | Choujin Koukousei-tachi wa Isekai demo Yoyuu de Ikinuku you desu! Highly contrived; plot firmly in driver's seat. I get that they're trying to do some kind of allegory with the Enlightenment and rise of the industrial age and democracies, but there's hardly any meaningful conflict nor character development, and it's nearly impossible to care. | 4 | TV | 12 | Fall 2019 | Project No.9 | PG-13

100 | ![]() | Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shitai! Movie: Take On Me Generally as entertaining as the series; very entertaining in spots. Really enjoyed Dekomori & Nibutani (Mori Summer) bits. Really didn't like the big sister - always being painted as the Big Bad. But I guess the scene in the restaurant should have been a clue as to her real intentions. Quite the adventure. | 8 | Movie | 1 | Winter 2018 | Kyoto Animation | PG-13

114 | ![]() | Code Geass: Hangyaku no Lelouch Zero for President! (Or, Emperor, rather.) Overdramatic nearly to the point of being a parody of itself, but somehow the stylistic bombast serves the story. | 8 | TV | 25 | Fall 2006 | Sunrise | R

119 | ![]() | Cowboy Bebop Explores themes of how one deals with one's past (each character does this differently) and present and future. Music as metaphor is interwoven with the stories. Some silliness and some seriousness; some parody of or allusions to other SF. Some parts thought-provoking, some laugh-inducing, some tear-jerking. Very good series overall. It had lots of great elements (including philosophical stuff), but it just didn't seem to come together as a coherent and enjoyable whole. 255 | ![]() | Jaku-Chara Tomozaki-kun 2nd Stage Seemed a lot stronger than Season 1, but now that I'm catching a lot of clever subtleties in the mise-en-scene and so forth, I think Season 1 might need another viewing. | 9 | TV | 13 | Winter 2024 | Project No.9 | PG-13

262 | ![]() | Kage no Jitsuryokusha ni Naritakute! I can't tell whether this show is being cynical or satirical. Either way, it seems to be trying to use metafictional moves but just comes off as script-writing wish fulfillment by chuunibiyo. Later in the season, it gets better, but its putative protagonist is constantly detached from the local reality because his existence is a meta-frame, rendering him omnipotent and invulnerable, which tends to pull the gravitas right out of the otherwise seemingly genuine character development and emotional moments around him. For all that, the show is entertaining and stylistic but generally still feels a bit too cynical in the end. Then again, maybe I just have to accept Cid as a were-narrator, one foot in the local reality and one foot in the writer's room. As juvenile and ham-fisted a writer as he is, perhaps the bridge he creates between realities is more interesting than the show lets on so far. The story keeps asking me to care about these characters but then pulls the rug out from under me. After a few cycles of that, I get hardened against caring anymore. | 6 | TV | 20 | Fall 2022 | Nexus | R
263 | ![]() | Kaii to Otome to Kamikakushi Different! Cursed objects, curiosities, a child prodigy writer who can't come up with new ideas, a brother and sister who can't go home... Draws upon Japanese folklore and myth. Worth a watch. | 7 | TV | 12 | Spring 2024 | Zero-G | PG-13

271 | ![]() | Kanojo, Okarishimasu Background characters are pretty much all jealous assholes, and the protagonist needs to grow some gonads. The drama should have been resolved at the end of this season, but they have to milk it into future seasons apparently. Not horrible, and has some touching bits, but just meh overall. (Season 2 is a bit better, especially the last episode.) | 5 | TV | 12 | Summer 2020 | TMS Entertainment | PG-13
272 | ![]() | Kanojo, Okarishimasu 2nd Season It has a heart. But sometimes it's hard to see it past the annoying loser male protagonist. The last episode of season 2 finally gives some in-depth characterization showing why the FMC is the way she is. (About time!) | 6 | TV | 12 | Summer 2022 | TMS Entertainment | PG-13
273 | ![]() | Kanojo, Okarishimasu 3rd Season This series and its MCs are super frustrating. They keep dragging everything out because everyone's too afraid to take a risk and communicate their true feelings. It's like the characters' development is stunted by the plot's insistence on maintaining its titular conceit instead of allowing the characters to have agency and grow (along with their relationship). Spoiler: I really started to get into the drama in this season and was hopeful for them, but the last episode let me down hard. I mean, I enjoyed this season even more than season 2 (~ 7 / 10), until that darn final episode. | 5 | TV | 12 | Summer 2023 | TMS Entertainment | PG-13

280 | ![]() | Keikenzumi na Kimi to, Keiken Zero na Ore ga, Otsukiai suru Hanashi. Good / more-mature take on the HS romance genre; FMC is certainly a type we rarely get, and the show does a great job exploring the nuances and emotional complexity of her character.
