Boukensha ni Naritai to Miyako ni Deteitta Musume ga S-Rank ni Natteta

While on an errand in the forest, retired E-rank adventurer Belgrieve stumbles upon a basket that holds an abandoned baby girl. Taking pity on her, Belgrieve decides to adopt the infant and names her Angeline.

Growing up, Angeline idolized her father, especially admiring his swordsmanship and wishing to become an adventurer just like Belgrieve once was. To fulfill this ambition, Angeline sets out to the royal capital. Over the years, she rises to S-rank, gaining the title of the Black-Haired Valkyrie. Despite surpassing her father, Angeline boasts about him and embellishes his exploits, generously calling him the Red Ogre.

At last, the time for Angeline to go back home has come, but she quickly realizes that various evil forces persist in preventing her from returning to her beloved father's side.

At first, I actually dropped this anime because of its lower-budget animation, but I’m so glad I went back and finished it! The story is incredibly wholesome and more than makes up for any visual shortcomings. It really drives home the idea that no matter how strong you are, you’ll always love your papa. While it’s a slower-burn series, I genuinely enjoyed the simplicity of grinding as an adventurer as it gives a surprisingly realistic glimpse into the everyday work of fantasy worlds. Sure, there are still the typical OP characters, but the show layers in a lot of comedy, which makes it feel fresh ... instead of your usual power fantasy.

If you’re looking for a slice-of-life fantasy anime that makes you laugh, warms your heart, and makes you think “aww, that’s cute,” I highly recommend My Daughter Left the Nest and Returned as an S-Rank Adventurer. You can never go wrong with a wholesome fantasy story centered around the bond between a dad and his daughter. Family anime are just the BEST!!!

Mixed Feelings

Not just warm and cute but surprisingly wholesome anime about great dad and daughter (and other) relationship(s). Name could be kind of misleading, because this is not the case of overpowered protagonists and heroes lording above any other mortals like some gods. No, this dad and dauther although pretty strong still struggle and sometimes even loose the fight which feels like fresh air in todays anime stereotypes.

But fights belongs to worse (because underdeveloped) aspects of this anime. If you want to watch it, do it for displayed relationships, atmosphere and values. Tropes like selfless family love, beauty of quiet life, power of forgiveness, humility and ... respect often looking flat, boring and preachy elsewhere are natural, with some depth and truly shining here.
Its a shame plot is almost non-existent and often rushed which leads to the wasted potential of interesting motives and storylines being solved ridiculously quickly and looking shallow because of it.
Closure in the end of the season one is basically missing and last episodes work like one big teaser for season 2 which is understandable strategy but still bad writing for me.

Sayori Hayami in her peak form gave Angeline truly angelic voice which is bliss to hear, but cliché really underdeveloped fantasy settings with shallow empty looking lore and overusing some more annoying than funny anime tropes make this anime just fine despite it could be so much more.

Preliminary (10/13 eps)

I feel a bit frustrated writing a review for this series as I had high hopes for it after having followed the manga adaptation for a while. Unfortunately the anime has been very lacking both as its own series and especially compared to the manga adaptation,comparison on which much of this review is based.

I am not going to be going into the plot that much, as the basics of the setting can be found from the description of this page. Shortly its a fantasy-adventure story starring a father and a daughter with nice balance of action, drama and comedy (or at least it ought ... to be), with some nice mystery hooks.

The reasons for why I can not really recommend the series are mostly based on two points, the rushing of the plot, and the art-direction and quality of animation. I am constantly surprised when watching the series how quickly the just breeze through all the plot-lines, leaving them feeling rather unimportant, while also failing to adapt a plenty of nice little moments that brought the distinct sometimes serious, sometimes humorous, atmosphere of the manga to life. For the art&animation admittedly I am not familiar with the original VN but comparing both for example the art of the characters and animations as depicted to the how these were dealt with in the manga has left me significantly disappointed. It just screams low-quality to me.

All in all, I am going to finish the series but doubtful I'd ever re-watch it. The regretful part is, that it had potential for so much more.
