Synopsis

In a distant future, Earth has become a wasteland and humanity as we know it has died out. All that remains are sentient robots. They were supposed to be able to live forever—until the one called Luna died and the Ruin started. Their bodies will rust, and there is nothing that can be done to fix it. Now the robots are left only to contemplate their deaths, kept going only by the rumor that if they eat the one called Casshern, they will gain immortality.

Casshern knows nothing about his past, why he exists, or what he is, but he must find out, or he will face the constant torment of being hunted by robots who don't want to die. Casshern leaves death wherever he goes, but he must face it if he is to find out the truth of this world.

Probably the closest we'll get to a Shadow of the Colossus/Last Guardian anime, neo-1970s character designs notwithstanding. It's shocking that this series has remained in total obscurity despite having some of the most stunning visual composition and background art in the medium. Beautiful chiascuro lighting throughout. If "weary immortal and his dog wander the windswept wastes" sounds appealing and you love the quiet moody journeys of 90s/00s classics, you'll probably enjoy this a lot. The script has some issues but is understated enough to not get in the way of the visual storytelling. Also worth studying purely on a technical level. Seriously, how is this ...

Mixed Feelings
This review will contain SPOILERS for the show and will be pointed out before each section.
INTRODUCTION
While the premise of a character exploring the meaning of life after the world fell to ruin greatly interest me the execution itself was poorly done.
CASSHERN
Firstly, the main character Casshern is uninteresting as the only emotion he exhibits is depression, because of the fact that the caused the "ruin" which overtook the world. While facing the fact that you are the one that caused the end of the world would cause likely cause the feelings Casshern displays the issue is he doesn't remember doing this, in fact he remembers nothing. ...

An egrecious case of style over substence

It is very clear from the beginning that Casshern Sins tries way too hard to be philosophical, it's pacing can also be quite erratic jumping from scene to scene before they feel quite finished, but despite it's shortcomings it does also pose some interesting mysteries, this yearning for the truth that we feel together with the protagonist along with the marcarbly beautiful aesthetic and soulful soundtrack almost compensates for the lurking melodramatic feel it has created

Unfortunately, every bit of intrigue that built up over the course of the series gets completely destroyed half way thru in a matter of ...
