Among the seaside town of Izu's ocean waves and rays of shining sun, Iori Kitahara is just beginning his freshman year at Izu University. As he moves into his uncle's scuba diving shop, Grand Blue, he eagerly anticipates his dream college life, filled with beautiful girls and good friends.
But things don't exactly go according to plan. Upon entering the shop, he encounters a group of rowdy, naked upperclassmen, who immediately coerce him into participating in their alcoholic activities. Though unwilling at first, Iori quickly gives in and becomes the heart and soul of the party. Unfortunately, this earns him the scorn of his cousin, Chisa Kotegawa, who walks in at precisely the wrong time. Undeterred, Iori still vows to realize his ideal college life, but will things go according to plan this time, or will his situation take yet another dive?
I went into this with the hopes that it would be fun given the high average score and let's just say I was extremely disappointed, btw this is just based on the first episode as that is all I've seen and ever will see as I am dropping this. This is about a generic main character going back to live in place he used to live 10 years ago yep I've seen this before; of fucking course he has childhood friend girls but that honestly doesn't matter all that fucking happens is the character is dragged into drinking by some fucking asshole's and his childhoodfriend/cousin says
he's stupid for it.yes that's basically it some of the faces are funny but the jokes are repetitive and the art is fucking generic and kind of ugly especially charachter's face's.Also to that other review that said this is quote on quote mature because it has adult character NO it fucking isn't every character act's more immature and stupid than most high school student's just cause they are adult's doesn't mean this is mature this is about a bunch of immature assholes forcing a generic stupid guy to drink and party and then a girl chastises him for it even though she knows he was forced to do it every time after the first time it happens. The animation is so lackluster and cheap I don't even remember any of it even though I just watched I know it must have a tiny bit or a would have noticed but yeah it's not good.So yeah if you want a generic premise with generic shallow charachter's with a show that peer pressures and abuses it's boring ass main character have fun but if not please don't watch this garbage.
I guess I will put the disclaimer that should be unnecessary here this is just my opinion whether it is good or not is obviously subjective blah blah blah if you don't know this than you are probably either young, new to art or art critique, or so ungodly stupid this disclaimer ain't going to matter
I heard nothing but praise for this show. It somehow is pleasing critics. How? I have no fucking clue.
This is a comedy series... that only has one joke. Over and over again. The characters are mostly bland. The "comedic" faces are just not fun to look at. The concept is stupid. The few paths of the story that I was at all interested in were never covered. It only tries to be funny, which it really isn't. I'm baffled this show is getting a positive reception, because nothing impressed me. I think the only reason people are flocking to it is because it is college
not high school. I understand that high school series are overused, while the college setting is underutilized, but that shouldn't excuse a show for having nothing else to offer.
Please note that i re-read the manga (at last what's out atm) about 20 times before watching the first episode so i'm biased against it. To me, it was most likely going to be a letdown no matter the quality.
Secondly, this rant is based on the first episode, but considering the problems, they will probably last through the entire run.
So, let's get to it.
Story: Our MC comes over to his uncle to live with, while he studies engineering at a college nearby.
You know how people describe their time in college? Lots of alcohol and dumb fucking ideas? Yeah, grand blue is those stories, cranked to
If you're looking for a gripping character drama or a plot that actually goes somewhere you'll be disappointed, there basically isn't any plot, it's just our main cast trying to not die from alcohol poisoning.
The anime looks like garbage. They fucked the character designs, expressions, animation etc.
Every visual aspect they could fuck up, they did (outside of camera directing, they just followed the manga panels.)
The moment i saw it's done by Zero-G (they did nothing worth mentioning before and their shows got an average rating of 6.3, just to make my point clear, Berserk 2016 has 6.7 rating), i got worried that it would look like shit. The instant i saw the PV i was sure it would look like shit. And even then it managed to disappoint me.
They didn't pull any dumb shit with the comedy, what was funny in the manga still is funny in the anime.
It's a comedy about terrible people, being terrible to each other. As well as lots of alcohol. Imagine prison school, but instead of sex/fetish jokes you got alcohol hijinks.
Water, oolong tea, high school girls in college, the alcoholic strippers (so far in the first episode) were hilarious and there are many more jokes and moments like these to come.
Sure to be one of the funniest anime i have ever seen/read.
Sound and voice acting:
I never was hard to please in this regard, OP is catchy, Voice acting is decent.
No dumb sound effects like in the black pansman 2016 or annoying music like in umaru chan.
When it got announced i was hoping for a nichijou-ish, prison school-ish or even cromartie high school-ish adaptation, sadly that isn't the case.
Instead, we got garbage even Toei would be ashamed of.
It feels like a lazy, lifeless, passionless "do it because we have to" moving manga.
Why make it an anime when it doesn't animate?
6/10 for me
Should you watch? Only if you're too lazy to read/don't like reading manga, otherwise, read/buy it instead.
The staff drank too much water and oolong tea that they adapt this so badly, the synopsis may sounds skeptical (Don't judge the book by its cover) but the diving is really not the focus of it you're probably expecting of rom com fanservice but Grand Blue didn't rely in that pathetic shit it may sound generic and cliche but it's really unique that way the delivered its comedy is on point that you would laugh your ass off to the point that you can't even breathe anymore and your stomach will ache as hell trust me
The manga was a masterpiece it's easy to read
and so detailed with its visuals
The manga was 10/10 for me but anime.... is meh 6-7/10 when it comes to art style the manga is way superior compared to the anime adaptation (Spread the salt Kyouhei) reading manga was like watching an actual anime
I really highly recommended you read the manga instead of watching this even though you're not a manga reader like me and don't forget the water and oolong tea it's good for your alcohol system
You won't get disappointed in the manga it even exceeds the Gintama in terms of comedy and this anime may sounded cliche and generic the selling point of this is how they build up the comedy it always gets relevant later that's pretty much in a nutshell like Steins;Gate connect the dot thingy
I really have a high expectations of its adaptation but turns out meh the probably had a restrictions or limitations because they changed the characters age to legal and hair color of the MC it's supposed to be blue
And the voice acting feels shallow and no goddamn hype at all I'm expecting it to be like Saiki or Gintama voice acting thingy turns out wasted potential
I'm expecting to laugh more with its anime adaptation but instead i felt void Grand Blue is my favorite manga BTW
