Grand Blue

Iori Kitahara moves to the coastal town of Izu for his freshman year at its university, taking residence above Grand Blue, his uncle's scuba diving shop. Iori has high hopes and dreams about having the ideal college experience, but when he enters the shop he is sucked into the alcoholic activities of the carefree members of the Diving Club who frequent the place. Persuaded by upperclassmen Shinji Tokita and Ryuujirou Kotobuki, Iori reluctantly joins their bizarre party. His cousin Chisa Kotegawa later walks in and catches him in the act, earning Iori her utter disdain.

Based on Kenji Inoue and Kimitake Yoshioka's popular comedy manga, Grand Blue follows Iori's misadventures with his eccentric new friends as he strives to realize his ideal college dream, while also learning how to scuba dive.

First time reviewing an anime ! Thank you for reading !

Grand blue is a comedy anime and its an extreme one. Jokes of it never gets old - I randomly start over and over again to just drown my self into laughter !

Each character is uniqe and funny their own. They are not generic "tsundere A" or "kuundere B" or "stupid but strong C" character design. It is something that I didn't see before.

Art style at first is very simple but at "focus" scenes it is very detailed glorified to make it more funny. It is quite good match for this kind of anime. ... It is very similiar to PRISON SCHOOL anime which had a similiar style.


A MUST WATCH in my opinion , I showed it to all of my friends (there are few em but...) and all loved it !

Mixed Feelings

“Grand Blue” is what happens when You mix a fever dream with the most nonsensical, deranged and dumb humor You can imagine.

It might be the fact that I was mostly stuck in a lab with a shit load of numbers to analyze for the past few days but I actually had fun with this one. It’s dumb, borderline retarded and had barely anything that isn’t a cheap joke and yet it made me laugh a few times. Like I said, I might be overworked.

It’s an over the top comedy and it wears that on its sleeve.
It uses over exaggerated reactions to a lot of ... things as it’s comedy and uses too much of the garbage notion that loud = funny (spoiler alert: It’s not). It has little to no story and relies fully on its plot and fan service.

The problem is that this show overwhelms You with its “comedy”. It barely gives itself time to breathe. It’s just one cheap joke after another. Apart from the first moments of the first episode You get very little scenes in the whole show that don’t have jokes forced on them. Not surprisingly this works to the show's detriment. After the first two or three episodes You’ve seen enough to know with 99% certainty what will happen next and even properly guess the actors that will be used to achieve it. Trust me, after the first few episodes there will be very little (but not nothing so I guess it’s something) that will surprise You.

Surprisingly enough there are scenes where someone, probably by accident, wrote something that uses contrast to let the comedy take a breather. More surprisingly enough, those moments are pretty solid. They show different sides of the characters and if there were more of those the show could actually be solid. It’s almost like… do I dare say it? Someone wanted to actually write a proper story? Yeah… I don’t believe that either. It’s probably just an accident.

As for the characters… Let's be honest, they are terrible. A lot of them act the same with slight differences in mannerisms (and design) to let You tell them apart. There isn’t even much to talk about. Apart from drinking and diving You don’t get to see them do much of anything. The show does throw in some other kind of fuckery but they needed to change the coterie to do it properly. As a consequence the show uses two groups for its humor. The main group - the diving club is used for more sexual and adult humor and the classmate group to poke fun at teenage romcoms.

At the end of the day “Grand Blue” won’t break any new grounds but if You’re overworked (like me) and want something that only requires a two digit IQ this could help You to unwind.

This show did not age well at all. The jokes here are so lame and predictable I hate to even call it a comedy. I don't think there's a single original joke in the entire thing. I only watched this because it was on the recommended tab of Prison School, which is one million times funnier in every conceivable way. Prison School is laugh-out-loud funny while this show is more like a school drama with goofy characters. All the characters are boring. MC overreacts to every situation by making silly faces even when there's no reason to. This might actually be one of the worst ... comedies I've ever seen.
