Devilman: Crybaby

Devils cannot take form without a living host. However, if the will of an individual is strong enough, they can overcome the demon and make its power their own, becoming a Devilman.

Weak and unassuming, Akira Fudou has always had a bleeding heart. So when his childhood friend Ryou Asuka asks for his help in uncovering devils, Akira accepts without hesitation. However, to Akira's surprise, the place they go to is Sabbath: an immoral party of debauchery and degeneracy. Amidst bloodshed and death, demons possess the partiers, turning their bodies into grotesque monsters, and begin wreaking havoc. In a reckless attempt to save his best friend, Akira unwittingly merges with the devil Amon and becomes a Devilman, gaining the power to defeat the remaining demons.

Though it grants him great power, this new partnership awakens an insatiable and primeval part of Akira. Having the body of a devil but the same crybaby heart, Akira works alongside Ryou, destroying those that harm humanity and his loved ones.

As a fan of the original manga, this adaptation does everything perfectly despite some of the story and mostly setting changes. Devilman Crybaby's use of grotesque and crude imagery to show how humans can be just as, if not more vile than the demons they despise is such a good way to convey the message of the story from the beginning. The original manga is a story that truly changed the way I perceive the world from the young age I read it at, and Crybaby gave me that same feeling while watching. If you are comfortable enough with the themes and imagery, I highly ... recommend this.

Mixed Feelings

Devilman: Crybaby, where do i begin, im totally fine with any media having inappropriate sexual scenes, however when the characters are young, no matter how hypersexualized its portrayed, its might be a problem. I understand that in Devilman, its supposed to show the humans primal/devlisih urges, that no matter how we try to phrase it, humanity at its core is inherently sexual in nature. This anime is not bad, however if i ever had to give an example of amazing animation, great first episode, then confusing, weird story and boring ending, then that would be Devilman. The Queer characters are also pretty okay, its not ... as bad as some other anime.

If any media has a sexual scene, and removing it would make the story confusing or worse, then the sexual scenes are necessary. However if fully removing sexual scenes, and the story still feels the same means the sexual scenes were just used by the creators to use as an attention grabbing technique to distract from a weak story. I do believe there are at least one sexual scene is necessary for Devilman's storyline to show human's primal/devilish urges. Again this anime's not bad, its also not as good, most people have a positive opinion on this one.

Finally, its totally fine if you like this anime, not calling anyone who likes this a bad person, however it is weird if you like it, as most ignore to address the problematic stuff in it.

I just finished watching this, and... I have no idea how this has an even remotely positive score. Spoiler Free.

The animation is wacky, with some of it being good and the rest being bad. We get still frames or non-animated characters frequently. If there's something to like, it might be the fan service, which we see a lot of.

The characters don't develop all that much, or we see wild changes which make you wonder if they even have a baseline character. Our MC doesn't develop, then kind of changes and undoes that change at the end. I thought there might have been some kind ... of inherent super power, but it's just the character doing as the plot commands. There's also the character's ability to fight, which just changes randomly.

When it comes to the story... I've got nothing good to say. The main character thinks or doesn't think at the plot's convenience, mass death is ignored unless it's a plot point, characters do non-sensical things, our main character goes to achieve a goal then comes back to the starting point with no reason for the change other than plot, the 'masses' commit non-sensical violence over and over again. I don't even understand what the main villain was trying to accomplish. Sure, it was told to us shortly before the ending, but even that does not make sense.

Ultimately, don't watch this if you want to maintain your sanity.
