THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
The pacing is really settling in here for the last few episodes, it seems. This was another episode without much action but really pushed the plot and characters forward in various ways. I wish Ryo's speech at the end wasn't in English. The longer they made him speak the more his accent came out, but these voice actors still have some of the better English I've seen in anime.

Funnily enough, I started to understand his English better as time went on, though that might just be me getting used to it.

Really enjoyed this overall, however I wish there was a stronger buildup of the relationship between Ryou and Akira. The twist at the end definitely got the job done, but I feel like it could have packed a bigger punch with some subtleties thrown throughout the previous 7 episodes. However I haven't read the source material yet, so take my opinion with a grain of salt.

Man, that lengthy Engrish speech at the end. Luckily Murase Ayumu's English was actually understandable and quite good at times. Fantastic episode. I love that Crybaby's putting more focus on Ryo and it will make the upcoming events much more impactful. That scene with Miki's family was really well done too. The encounter between Akira and the other devils was a bit rushed, but overall, I didn't have a real problem with it.

The dub's been completely avoiding F-bombs until now, even with the sub was using them, but now we get two 'motherfucker's out of nowhere.

"Mom, I can't stand it anymore." Poor Taro. I wouldn't be able to stand to listen to all that religious shit ad nauseam either.

"Please don't shoot! That's my son in there!" *gets blown to pieces* Gee, someone's military's a little trigger-happy!

I'm a little disappointed Akira and Miko didn't bang. The sexual tension as Miko commented on how much Akira had changed after becoming a demon was very noticeable.

"I'll show you the moment my good friend, Akira Fudou, transformed into a demon." Okay, Ryo is fucking insane. Instead of taking the opportunity to explain the difference between a Devilman and a demon, he really fucked shit up.
"No, son, you may not have your body pillow at the dinner table!"

Miki's mother, father, and brother are killed; Koda wants to side with the demons because they're the "winning" side; Ryo has super powers?, adds fuel to the anti-demon hysteria, and, for some reason, turns against Akira. What a scumbag. First episode I didn't completely enjoy. It wasn't bad, but it pissed me off.

it was gradually throughout the series, you could see it happening the more and more he thought violence and demons were cool especially during the track meet where all those people died he sat there finding it awesome

The hell was that? What happened to the pacing? So much shit was crammed into this episode that no individual part of it was given enough time to breathe. The scene with Tare's dad could have been so much more powerful if it wasn't restricted to such a small amount of time on screen. I loved every episode up to this point, but damn that one was clunky. Hope this isn't a sign of things to come

Damn, it feels like things are really coming to a climax and I'm excited to see how they'll wrap up the next two episodes.

Christian Daddy and the rest of the fam down, that was rough. Music was on point again as it has been throughout the show.

Wondering who this Xenon character is. The demon form of the dude we've seen now and again in front of that giant screen? Even though Akira was injured, it seemed like he'd still be outclassed. What is the gimmick that allowed Akira to overpower Amon? Did Amon submit willingly?

Ryou is... something. A demon himself perhaps? We still don't know what the big white light was but it seems as though Ryo has similar powers. Although, he seemed pretty distraught with the white light. And the military wanted to kill him. Demon, or something else entirely?

Really wondering how Miki is gonna take the news about Akira. Poor girl had her entire fam killed and now her foster brother is a demon. Will it consume her and turn her into a demon as well? I'm not buying the entire explanation that Ryo gave.

All in all, great episode. Gonna clean up the remaining two now!

RIP Miki's family. Jeez. Taro ate his own mother.

Idk what's Ryo's actual motive doing all this, tbh. It's fucking me up. Fuck him! Lmao. So, in the end he set up Akira? Hahaha. Fuck everyone in this show except Miko and that other-Devilman-I-forgot-his-name.

That scene where Miki's family died was heart-wrenching, but I wasn't surprised that they all died. I'm not quite sure if I believe what Ryo said about how demons are born. I can't trust Ryo because he's been a shady character from the beginning. I am beginning to get more curious about Amon, though. Why does everyone want him to awaken?? Why is he such a popular demon. His demon form doesn't seem particularly great or powerful...

hahaha, rushing a bit fast.
Ryo suddenly has a demon legion, and memories he didn't know about or forgot. And someone covering the tracks. Some army knows Ryo's an enemy but pwned by his godly light, somehow similar to that ball of light over the missing fleet.
Miki's family all die, I expected this, but no time to mourn so quickly the legion starts fighting Akira.
Ryo's already evil enough, but now betrays mc, since demons want devilmen & all humans dead somehow.

Honestly, I feel more sorry for Miki's parents than I do for her little brother, Taro. He always wanted to become a demon and his father really struggled and tried to protect them in the end.

The pacing is way too fast too, they're crammed so much in a little amount of time but I guess that's what happens when you cram everything into 10 episodes. That part where demon Taro ate his mom and his dad was conflicted on whether he should shoot them or not could've been more powerful.

One second Akira is trying to save them and half a second later they're buried.

Ryo is worshipped as Satan in South America.

Ryo heavily edited that footage to make Akira seem like the bad guy. Akira wasn't he one who stabbed everyone in the first episode with a broken bottle.

Humanity has gone to shit, and it just keeps rising. Miki's father finds Taro transformed, and tries to kill him but can't. He tries to protect him from the police force and gets killed- brutally, at that- leaving Miki without a family. Things get even more intense as Ryo announces to the world how demons manifest, evolving the people's paranoia even further, and betrays Akira.

Yep, I was thinking the same thing.

Ryo took all the footage and edited it to make Akira the bad guy. I don't really understand why Akira kept trusting him, especially after the last episode. I guess it was that he was lonely like he said.

Taro looked kind of cool as that worm monster, but that whole sequence was super upsetting. I thought the military was going to shoot him, thinking he was the demon without even approaching the tent. Of course, they just shot everyone.

This was the literal most bleak and miserable episode of anything I've ever seen, the only thing comparable to it is

We see how awful society has become as Miki's dad tries to find his loved ones. Everyone's killing each other, people are robbing each other and taking apart their motorcycles the second they get a chance, intense distrust, twitter showed a guy killing a cat and asking to be made a demon, police brutality, and countless suicide jumpers who can't take it anymore. This horrible painting of how life has become lead to the first scene that made me feel this way.

The way Miki's dad tried to resolve himself over and over again to kill his son, his son who had struggled not to release his demonic side and who's mother did everything she could to help him, was one of the most tragic and well directed scenes I've ever seen. The way he told him that he's no longer his son, that this is for his own good and Taro cried showing his human heart, and the way he yelled to the SWAT team that "that's my son, don't shoot!' before both being filled to the brim with bullets is going to give me nightmares. I genuinely felt so awful for him. It doesn't end there. Akira who was raised these people has to bury all three. He couldn't save them either, he couldn't even save his second family after his first was talking in front of his eyes.

Then Koda tries to switch sides as foreshadowed by the dialogue after his race with Miko. If there wasn't already devilmen who swapped sides then he may be the first.

And Akira and Miko go back to Miki's to tell her what happened. One of the rappers see's Kikun's glasses fall out. There's a cold, intense moment of no sound, no music, and... "everyone is dead". She walks upstairs, and Akira breaks into tears wailing. She breaks into tears wailing herself and we hear both's cries overlap at different sides of the house as we see a pan of the family together, being a family, Akira included. Jesus Christ. I love Akira and Miki and this hurt to watch. I thought Devilman may struggle to use emotion from the melodramatic parent fight, but as melodramatic as it was, it was done for developmental purposes mainly. Now we see a family we've grown to like, and we see two beautifully characterized characters lose everything and deal with it in a haunting way.

It can't end there yet, nope because this is Devilman. After this loaded and thick atmosphere that made me feel sick to my stomach we see Ryo, probably Satan reborn, transparently try and send society into an even greater decline. If dissatisfaction causes devils to form in us, which we try to hide but feel the need to act on the urges it brings to find happiness or at least indifference, then making people kill their loved ones, have greater suspicion than ever, and kill the innocent isn't the way to go. It will only make them emotionally worse, and scared for their own well being. That said, it has to be on purpose. After playing the altered footage I have to wonder if he told Akira where Akkiko and Taro were for a similar reason, to torment Miki, Akira, and the father.

I want to say I do agree with Ryo's descriptor on how Devil's are formed, it works with the themes and symbolism, and proves why some that don't have greater happiness and satisfaction lose themselves to devils, but those who do can fight back. Akira knows love and emotion more than anyone else. It's why he could initially control himself, and why realizing that the people he was harming could feel things grounded him. I think it's also why Miko realizing herself as an individual and growing from Miki saving her made her more human than ever as well. Everything falls into place with this analysis, that devils are born from humans. The way they summon them is to use an influx of drugs, sex, and violence, why? Because the reasons you use them is to escape your emotions and dissatisfaction as stated explicitly from Ryo earlier in the series.

Miko has grown so much. I can't say her devil version was that much different from her usual self, she just had means to chase her spiteful feelings. Now in my mind, after being saved by Miki and escaping from her Grandmother she's found that not everything was truly after her. That she has a presence of her own, and that being Miko is fine, or at least that she's on the way to finding that. Just look at how happy and confident she was with Koda, and how she had no ill will towards Miki when she met her for the first time since the track meet. Supporting characters are too good in this.

I had assumed Jenny, assuming she was the secretary because of her face, was Ryo's first test for creating a devil so he could turn Akira into one. Now, she seems to play a bigger role than ever. I hope we can have a greater understanding of Ryo by the end, and this whole plot.

Lastly, I want to mention that we have been seeing Taro develop into a devil. He's had a fascination with devils, with drugs making you stronger, has looked at pornography, has been fascinated by violence. I bet all that paired with the worldwide bloodshed creating fear or other emotions in him was key to his transformation.

Second best episode since episode 5 for me. Maybe even the best.
