Grisaia no Rakuen

Grisaia no Rakuen begins right at the end of the previous installment, Grisaia no Meikyuu. Kazami Yuuji is arrested under suspicion for terrorism. A video showing apparently concrete proof that Yuuji committed these acts, and he is held in custody by Ichigaya.

Ichigaya knows full well that Yuuji didn't commit the crimes he has been accused of. But he did fail to assassinate Heath Oslo, who is the leader of the terrorist organization with an extremely devastating weapon in their possession. In fact, Ichigaya have their own plans for Yuuji...

But all may not be lost for Yuuji. The girls of the Mihama Academy are not about to let Yuuji be used for political gain, and neither may the mysterious new figure which appears before them.

Mixed Feelings

This Season finally cleared up many of the questions left hanging from the first, and overall felt like a solid improvement. The story was more engaging and gave a deeper look into the characters, making the experience smoother and easier to follow. Some of the cast stood out in a good way, though the MC’s sister, despite being a genius, came across a bit too eccentric at times.

While it had its strong moments and wrapped up several mysteries nicely, it still felt like a one-time watch for me. A decent continuation that ties things together without overstaying its welcome.

[DISCLAIMER: This is a review of the whole trilogy "The Fruit of Grisaia - The Labyrinth of Grisaia - The Eden of Grisaia", and literally wrote this review at 3:45AM, directly after finishing the final episode with zero proofreading cause I'm tired and need to go to bed]

This series has given me such a puzzled feeling after finishing the final episode that I couldn't help but write this first ever review that I've written on MAL.

So to give some context, the Grisaia trilogy as I'll ... call it is a show that I had heard very little about beforehand and had only seen a friend of mine give praise for and also learned that my own father has seen (and read) the series himself. Given that both of them recommended me to give it a shot, there was some worry as soon as I noticed it was tagged with "Harem" (had been completely burnt out on harem stuff for awhile and has been one of my lesser favourite genres as of recently). But after giving it's first episode a chance, it spontaneously became not only a neat breath of fresh air but also felt like another show in a sub-genre that can be referred to as "Bait-and-Switch". Within its first episode, this show became my number one priority to go through. Now that I've sat through the whole trilogy, it doesn't feel like it was worth being a priority to watch.

The Fruit of Grisaia - 7/10

Being the first instalment of the trilogy, it ended up being a decent enough beginning set-up season for the overall trilogy. This whole season can be summed up as our main character entering this seemingly normal school with seemingly normal students only for the episode to end revealing not everything is as it seems, thus insuring the "Bait-and-Switch" from a regular harem highschool rom-com to something slightly more serious and darker. From there the rest of the season becomes the MC getting closer to the other characters and them opening up to their past traumas and situations that still affect them. Aside from one thing that bugged me about one character's backstory (HINT: Bus), each backstory helped at a level of depth that was surprising to witness for these characters that were initially setup as these cliche cookie-cutter characters. It also helps that the overall first season uses it's tropes and anime BS whenever it's necessary and not in the middle of pivotal moments in the story that's meant to be completely serious, and any other times it's used it's for non-serious parody. It sure would suck if that stopped doing that for the later parts (foreshadowing).

The Labyrinth of Grisaia - 4/10

This is where the series slowly fall downhill in my opinion and never recovers. Labyrinth of Grisaia is a nearly 50 minute special episode that focuses on the main characters backstory and childhood, something that I was getting more and more curious about while going through the first season. Well this was the answer to it and to say it wasn't predictable should be a compliment, until it's dawned what's happening. Out of all the things I was expecting, un-ironic and fully serious incest wasn't on the bingo card. Fucking why? And to make matters worse instead of showcasing it in a realistically negative way like with other backstory and plot-lines, it instead treats it almost like it has a positive effect on the MC and that it shouldn't be judged. Aside from a not-so-family-friendly dining room incident involving his parents that admittedly is dark and unfortunate, I just couldn't get emotionally attached after the interaction he had with his older sister.

The Eden of Grisaia - 5/10

As the final part of the trilogy, this continues to explore the MCs backstory/childhood with this going into both his phase being raised in a cabin and his later involvement in the military. On paper this sounds like an interesting idea that could explore some cool themes, only for it in execution to bring back Labyrinth's problem of including Anime BS in ways that's intended to be serious but only fumbles the tone completely. For the cabin plotline it features him being raised by an older guardian figure that teaches him how to live on his own and hone in on his survival skills, with the trade-off of teaching him how to...umm...sleep with her. "If per week like...five, six-". And once again it's not only played off in a positive manner, the characters in-universe and even the show portrays it like it's humorous. (including the technical r*PE of one of the garden's friends). Then we move forward to his time in the military and it starts off relatively interesti- they introduce a borderline pedophile that's apparently skilled in ways the other military soldiers aren't. He's so addictive to his pedophileic urges that literally in the middle of serious gun-battle it cuts to him 'finishing' up his 'normal' games so he can head home early. And you're also telling me that he not only survives everything but somehow gets a business where he's very open with his urges too. For a story that tries to be realistic in some ways, not even in a cartoon does that much Anime BS make any sense.
Moving on by the time it wrapped up his backstory it focuses on the present, finally giving the other characters in the present important screentime again. Without getting more into things a serious thing happens to him and now the other chicks are tasked with the mission of saving him, hopefully bringing the story back to its serious tone aga- Despite the more serious story they literally wake up the first morning more horny than anything before, they bring back the military pedo into the plot, and later on it's revealed that the sister who was originally dead is somehow both back in the plot and alive. By the time it got to this point all emotional investment and enjoyment given to the story by me had completely evaporated and only watched the remaining episodes just to make due with wasted time (plus used this series as an entry for the AWC)

FINAL STATEMENT:
It says a lot about how bad the bad in this series is when it's already made me forget about a lot of what's happened during the later half of this trilogy. What started off as a seemingly cool and refreshing series that fit the checkmarks for a new favorite show of mine has now left me thinking of the amount of wasted potential the series has left behind. A cool template that started of different and investing only to get ruined by the very Anime BS tropes and clitches that it started off either parodying for it's Bait-and-Switch hook, only to slowly forget the reasons why they explored things seriously in the first place. By the way I was curious why this series is barely talked about at all on Youtube compared to a lot of the other "popular" anime on MAL are, and the reasoning is pretty clear especially if you aren't desensitised to anime's BS.

All I'm gonna remember this series for is having a decent first season with a group of characters that I once was fond of until all the charm was taken the same way the MC's virginity was; immaturity and rushed incompetence.
