God Eater

The year is 2071. Humanity has been pushed to the brink of extinction following the emergence of man-eating monsters called "Aragami" that boast an immunity to conventional weaponry. They ravaged the land, consuming almost everything in their path and leaving nothing in their wake. To combat them, an organization named Fenrir was formed as a last-ditch effort to save humanity through the use of "God Eaters"—special humans infused with Oracle cells, allowing them to wield the God Arc, the only known weapon capable of killing an Aragami. One such God Eater is Lenka Utsugi, a New-Type whose God Arc takes the form of both blade and gun.

Now, as one of Fenrir's greatest weapons, Lenka must master his God Arc if he is to fulfill his desire of wiping out the Aragami once and for all. The monsters continue to be born en masse while the remnants of humanity struggle to survive the night. Only God Eaters stand between the Aragami and complete and total annihilation of the human race.

This anime is about humanity's survival against Aragami, who are monsters that consumes organic and even inorganic (inconsistent though) materials. It's very good, and we see the world through many character's view.

The story itself isn't unique, and has been done hundreds of time before. However, unlike many that failed, God Eater does a good job setting up this world to have a feeling of true fear and hopelessness. The only way to kill Aragami is using a device call God Arc, and the only way to use God Arc is to infuse human bodies with Aragami cells. That said, God Eaters, although they have amazing ... speed and strength, with an incredible weapon- are still outnumbered and many times, outpowered by Aragami.

The story also isn't so simple as there are a lot of politics at play, including deceptions by would be friends (which is one my favorite parts). Like you see why things are the way they are with humanity, even though you can clearly see it's unfair.

How are the characters? Lenka is the lead. He's solid. He is kind of a shounen protagonist in this weary world. A lot of stuff he says sounds corny, like "I'll save everyone" and "The power of friendship". However there is one thing that makes me like Lenka- his power is very grounded. Unlike many shounen protag who are OP and always gets power up moments during dire situation, Lenka gets his butt handed to him almost all the time. Lenka tries hard, but realistically there's just nothing he can do to save the day because the Aragami are just too powerful. This is evident by him seeing his family, friends, coworkers, and ordinary people die day after day. And yet, he does still keep his spirits high- which is kinda his theme (and the show). Overall, they did a good job with him being the main lead. Oh- also there is gonna be one episode dedicated to his back story and yeah- it's about one of the saddest episodes I've ever seen. I legit teared up.

Other mains include Alisa- who is also a 3rd gen God Eater like Lenka. Alisa is annoying and kind of your typical bitch character, but you come to understand her as her past is unveiled. Soma is the other teammate, and he's awesome. No nonsense and also has one of the most tragic back stories. Sakuya is the 2nd in command, and she's the glue of the team. I like her. There this other kid who is Lenka's age but he's annoying and forgetable (yeah, forgot his name). It's just not his teammates that are good though- the show also revolves around the 3 scientist who created God Eaters- Aisha, Paylor, and Johannes. To me, this was one of the best part of the show as it tells the struggle of how the 3 surivived, rised, and gave humanity hope.

The absolute best character and best part of the show, no doubt, is Lindow. Maaannnn, what a character. He is the leader of the the 1st unit, which includes Lenka. Lindow is what every person should strive to be. He's strong. He's kind. He's leads. He's also not a blind idiot who just follows orders. No. What makes Lindow intriguing is actually his demeanor to go against the rest of humanity and follow his own heart. I won't spoil too much, but he is a 10/10 character and one of my favorites of all time.

Production wise- animation is great. The battles are a bit shaky at times, but solid. VA's are top notch. And finally- the music. Goddamn 10/10 OST's. I immediately downloaded all the tracks. If you still don't want to watch this anime, at least listen to its OST. Guarantee you'll love it.

So yeah- definitely a great anime and should watch. Shame there's no season 2.

Mixed Feelings

goddamn how many times have I seen this trope of protag struggling with his past fights monsters with a group of misfits, with each their own personality. Look i get it, anime is all about tropes but this is a prime example of a not well thought off anime with a subpar plot and just used the game as a face so they have an excuse to make "an adaptation". However, the animation is still well done for me at the least, great action packed scenes and somewhat an average-decent world building I guess. Outside of those factors, an easy binge for sure but with ... how trope-heavy and cliche the anime was built it's not kind of anime that sticks long to your memories.

When i first watched this show I sort of had that odd feeling. Mid way through it felt like a complete rip off of Shingeki No Kyojin/Attack on Titan. No offense tho.
Although the art of the show felt very unique, the story lacked alot, not to mention the ending has to be the worst of any kind. Instead of answering the needed questions it instead opened new boxes. What the hell was this?
Overall 1.5/10. That too cause of the art style. The story sucks.
The way in which it was similar to AOT was the monsters beyond a certain point, humanity living within a certain ... boundary, soldiers who risk their lives for the betterment of humanity, main character motivated to free the humans, people not knowing that the man in charge has a son, this part felt so much relatable to the Uprising Arc of AOT. During the final eps we find ourselves in front of an intelligent enemy, one who humans thought were just mindless eaters. Sounds familiar? Yes it does.
Excuse me for the rant, but this show sucked.
