Synopsis

In the sequel, Hei and Yin are now on the run after betraying the Syndicate in the previous season. After leaving Japan, Hei encounters Suou Pavlichenko, a 13-year-old Eurasian girl who becomes embroiled in the war and politics of the various factions and Contractors vying for power. Meanwhile, Hell's Gate remains standing in Tokyo, after Hei's efforts to stop the Saturn Ring anti-Gate particle weapon from activating. Although Contractors are safe from the danger of having their existences erased, this does not prevent new and old Contractors from abusing their powers. As Misaki Kirihara and her team in the Public Security Bureau deal with the increasing Contractor cases, she also has to keep the Syndicate at bay, who has major positions in the Japanese police and intelligence bureaus around the world. The storyline setting primarily takes place in both Japan and Russia.

Somehow the high expectations I had awaiting the sequel to a fantastic series were not fulfilled. Ryuusei No Gemini isn’t exactly a sequel to Kuro no Keiyakusha, but more like a separate arc in itself. It would be unfair to compare both of them as they vary in their style and storyline. For starters, the series are not bi-episodic; instead revolve around a single storyline involving a Eurasian female protagonist. Hei’s involvement through the series although significant, has not really been up to what it ought to be.

--- NO SPOILERS --

Many people do the mistake watching this season, wishing it'd be a simple rehash of or the final closure to season 1. Here I try my best I can to review this series as its own. Besides that, I genuinely enjoyed DTB s2 just like I appreciated the first season.

Characters/Story

Our main protagonist Suou, the red-hair pigtail girl on the cover, is a kind and vulnerable girl who cares a lot for her family. In the first few minutes we get to know her everyday school-life, which drastically changes after an encounter with Contractors /people with special abilities.

I really enjoyed the first I guess season of Darker than black. It was entertaining, had a good story and enjoyable characters.

Darker than Black: Ryuusei no Gemini is enjoyable as well, but not as enjoyable as the first season. It feels like a completely different series. Like someone has taken the characters from Darker than Black and put them into a different Tv show. So I will list some pros and cons of this series.

Pros

1. The action is good and Hei still kicks ass.

2. The story is good and quite interesting. Quite different from Darker than Black but still enjoyable.

I'm not even going to break this down because I'll spoil something. Also! While this is just as good as the last season, it is different. I cannot stress that enough, and for some it will be a deal breaker.

EDIT: After complaints I decided to expand this review. I'll put out spoiler alerts if they come up.

Story: Excellent, it seems to be a character driven story, and the characters are excellent. The problem is if you don't care for a certain character, then you don't care for the story, so you have to be invested in the story. That being said, somehow, even a character read more

Recommendations

Both series are about humans who have supernatural powers. In Darker than Black there are Contractors who have these powers and in Speed Grapher there are Euphorias who have these superhuman powers. The stories of these anime are good and related to the modern world. There are also girls who the main guy wants to help and protect.
Both mains are assassins from an organization and end up being betrayed and whatsover.
They have weapons/firearms coming out of character's TITS that represent some sort of phallic imagery. The only difference is while both of them have under-aged heroines who are still supposed to be in middle school one looks like a loli and the other looks like a young woman in their highschool/college years for some inexplicable reason.
Very similiar depressing/dark atmosphere in both of the series. In DTB there are contractors who are the outcasts, while in Wolf's Rain it's wolves.

And they share a common studio, Bones, so the art is very similiar.

The feeling of the series is very similiar : "Dark". (Also to the main series "Darker than Black" is very similiar to The unlimited) And of course both animes are about special powers, like ESP.

The main characters are neither good nor bad people - kinda in the "gray" zone, thats what makes the character developement interesting.

And while Hyobu tries his best to save Yuugiri, and fulfill her wishes,
Hei travels with Suou on his journey and is kinda a mentor to her.
Both anime consists of a sister with an evil brother. The sister regains her memories gradually, while the brother waits for her in the end. It consists of gun play action, and the sister tries to defeat her brother.
