God Eater

The year is 2071. Humanity has been pushed to the brink of extinction following the emergence of man-eating monsters called "Aragami" that boast an immunity to conventional weaponry. They ravaged the land, consuming almost everything in their path and leaving nothing in their wake. To combat them, an organization named Fenrir was formed as a last-ditch effort to save humanity through the use of "God Eaters"—special humans infused with Oracle cells, allowing them to wield the God Arc, the only known weapon capable of killing an Aragami. One such God Eater is Lenka Utsugi, a New-Type whose God Arc takes the form of both blade and gun.

Now, as one of Fenrir's greatest weapons, Lenka must master his God Arc if he is to fulfill his desire of wiping out the Aragami once and for all. The monsters continue to be born en masse while the remnants of humanity struggle to survive the night. Only God Eaters stand between the Aragami and complete and total annihilation of the human race.

The God Eater anime has always stood out to me as a prime example of how to do an adaptation well. The original game has a silent, player stand-in protagonist and a story that is overall not very cohesive or compelling. In short, the studio did not have much to work with here beyond some pretty surface level characters and a loose plot flow.

The fact that they managed to take that shoddy framework and create something that is not only watchable, but genuinely pretty good, is a testament to the studio's dedication to the property. You can't create a brand new, well-developed, plot-cohesive MC ... from scratch without significant respect for and knowledge of the original work. Every character in the show gets a similar upgrade, giving them much more depth and intrigue than they ever had in the original game.

Unfortunately, the story ends before it really even gets started, but I respect the risky decision to not blow through the whole thing in a one-season blitz, even if the risk didn't pay off. The show would've been much worse off for it. Nonetheless, what exists is still something worth watching, even if it's for ufotable animation alone.

This show is extremely impressive as an adaptation, and in my opinion, is severely underrated. I am sad that we will likely never see the rest of the story animated, but it stands just fine on its own.

Mixed Feelings

goddamn how many times have I seen this trope of protag struggling with his past fights monsters with a group of misfits, with each their own personality. Look i get it, anime is all about tropes but this is a prime example of a not well thought off anime with a subpar plot and just used the game as a face so they have an excuse to make "an adaptation". However, the animation is still well done for me at the least, great action packed scenes and somewhat an average-decent world building I guess. Outside of those factors, an easy binge for sure but with ... how trope-heavy and cliche the anime was built it's not kind of anime that sticks long to your memories.

When i first watched this show I sort of had that odd feeling. Mid way through it felt like a complete rip off of Shingeki No Kyojin/Attack on Titan. No offense tho.
Although the art of the show felt very unique, the story lacked alot, not to mention the ending has to be the worst of any kind. Instead of answering the needed questions it instead opened new boxes. What the hell was this?
Overall 1.5/10. That too cause of the art style. The story sucks.
The way in which it was similar to AOT was the monsters beyond a certain point, humanity living within a certain ... boundary, soldiers who risk their lives for the betterment of humanity, main character motivated to free the humans, people not knowing that the man in charge has a son, this part felt so much relatable to the Uprising Arc of AOT. During the final eps we find ourselves in front of an intelligent enemy, one who humans thought were just mindless eaters. Sounds familiar? Yes it does.
Excuse me for the rant, but this show sucked.
