If you had to transfer to a school made up mostly of the other gender, what would be your first goal once you got there?
Thus starts the basic plot of our male protagonist character, Shingo, in Mashiro iro Symphony: The Concluded Harem. The first few episodes consist of Shingo trying to get along with all the other female students in the new merger school and honestly, not much success comes from it. Mostly, it’s because Airi the well-known class-rep hates the merger plan and does, with all her will, to withstand male contacts and friendships. Shingo was first shocked by Airi’s attitude towards the sudden merger plan because he had met her couple of days ago and she seemed like an understanding person at the time. But, later Shingo begins to work with Airi as her assisting class-rep and learns of her personality, that Airi is actually just a shy person. ENOUGH with the spoilers, now on to the focus of this anime.
Most of the plot? 6/10; D+
So eventually Airi sees that Shingo is a one of a kind male and she slowly develops a crush on him. While this was happening, many other characters became attracted by Shingo’s gentlemen personality as well. Although Shingo would have made friends anyways, his attempt to persuade Airi to become a more open person was really the key to him becoming the center of the harem. At that time though, Shingo had no direct intentions of getting a girlfriend or even admittedly, like any girls. As Shingo did his best to just be “himself,” girls around him begun to realize that and they, stunned by Shingo’s characteristics, all developed feelings for him. Most of the time at school, Shingo would just eat lunch with 5 other girls and he’ll just be like a boss, and focal point of the group. Shingo joins the anime club or something like that around episode 3 and he eventually meets the beautiful Miu-senpai, but not for the first time (I’ll go over Miu-senpai soon in greater details in the characters section). I personally enjoy these school type dramas, but Mashiro iro Symphony seemed too typical, besides the animal club idea.
Yeah, having fun with friends sure is great. BUT once you feel like you developed feelings for someone, you have to say it! This is one thing that really frustrates me with the harem genre, that most of the time some female characters never express their feelings or that the male characters are too stupid to realize it. (I’ll talk about the characters later in this review) Although, it’s not really a problem in Mashiro iro Symphony because of Miu-senpai’s caring personality, very good match with Shingo’s, just her being there softens my heart every time after something frustrating occurs. I would of given Mashiro iro Symphony a 4/10 overall if Miu-senpai ceased to exist.
All the characters… 7.5/10; A decent C
So, continuing Miu-senpai’s story: Shingo first sees Miu in the courtyard when he made a commitment to let all the girls in the merger school see the greatness inside all males. At that time, Miu-senpai was just about the only girl who was nice to Shingo. Shingo’s gaze and scenery of meeting Miu-senpai was very romantic, and dear I say sexy at the time. Miu had just lost her precious cat Pannnya, and Shingo being his gentlemen self and all found the cat for her and even earns the price of gazing at such a beauty. Later, when he greets her again, he seemed to be absorbed in her personality and beauties. Miu-senpai and Shingo flirts a bit, to a decent amount when they’re alone or in groups. But just a joke in the beginning. That’s when other characters such as Airi (as talked about earlier), and Sana (someone you’d call the bff stalker—of Miu-senpai) started becoming jealous of Miu-senpai and Shingo’s relationship. In contrast, Angelina Nanatsu, the school maid, and Sakuno, Shingo’s sister, once they learned of this relationship, they were all for it! Airi and Sana at first pretended that they were too, but secretly, they had admitted their feelings for Shingo with each other. Although not directly a “typical harem,” since neither Airi or Sana talks differently to Shingo throughout the anime. I think that’s because Airi never does admit directly that she liked Shingo and that Sana was never actually nice to Shingo. Sana always acted rude towards Shingo since Shingo supposedly wanted to “steal” Miu from her. This is a typical anime archetype where the characters use “I just want everything to always stay the same” as an excuse. Even though it is technically a harem, it’s at least got a concluded ending couple. That’s the GREAT thing about Mashiro iro Symphony, but the way they executed how the other girls were ignored by Shingo almost made it painful to watch, and made other female characters seem inferior. Some may argue this is a good thing, to have a concluded harem, but some may not like that idea at all. Basically, all the other female characters’ background stories and their relationship with Shingo are thoroughly explained, but I don’t really find them interesting. *Spoiler* If all the other characters could follow Miu-senpai’s soft personality, they would have easily gotten to Shingo, is what I think. Especially Airi, she seemed to have almost completely hid herself in the second part of the anime. Half the time I was wondering where she’d head off to. Though, Miu and Shingo’s love for each other was already innocent enough to make me weep. *end spoiler
Art & Sound: 9/10 ish; about B+ or A-
The artistic products of Sentai Filmworks just seem to stick out to me in the anime industry. I’m not quite sure if it’s the great quality or the fact that I watched the first three episodes on a large screen and the great artistic details were still illustrated clearly. Before exploiting further on the sound, I’d just like to say that the sound/art was judged based on its relation to the plot of the anime. The cute style of art and upbeat and traditional J-pop music really fit into the mini-dramas that happened, both the OP and Ending theme. And anyone who watched Mashiro iro Symphony could go on and on about its art, but I will just say that unless you have high expectations about the artwork or have weird tastes in the animation arts, you would enjoy its artistic aspects greatly.
Enjoyment: 8.5/10; a decent B or B+
By now, I think there have been enough spoilers but I haven’t gotten to the “meat” part of it yet. This anime was greatly enjoyable, mostly because Miu’s cuteness and her characteristics. Also, the relationship dramas I found interesting since they were serious and appealing to the audience, yet not so serious to the level of Clannad. So someone could take the themes in this anime seriously, but not be haunted about it over the next few days or something. That’s something very comforting about this Mashiro iro Symphony.
All in all, Mashiro iro Symphony:The Color of Lovers exemplifies an unique, artistic, and concluded harem with typical, interesting dramas between couples. If that’s what you’re looking for, then why not give Mashiro iro Symphony a try? ^.^ read more

Clannad, Kanon (2006) or ef - a tale of memories/melodies although aging, are the anime who solely represent how romance visual novels should be adapted. As an anime which aims to be romantic, the formula for success is quite simple. Cookie cutter girls are thrown into the same world with a heartthrob and there their feelings would be played around with might it be love or hate. Though absolutely clichéd, this method of portrayal proved to be effective when handling rom-coms. However as time pass, what was known as lovely and heart-warming was tainted by inappropriate fan service, unfunny and exaggerated humor but most of all, the formula was rehashed again and again making it feel like you’ve seen everything. Thus, the same type of characters appears in every anime with the same genre only with varying facial features. Yet despite that, some studios are too lazy to put in much effort even just to differentiate characters only relying to different hair colors and to two-syllable names to make them easy to remember and distinct from one another. Sadly, Mashiro-iro badly suffers from one of these categories; it was already done before, and in a much better way.
As an anime that has the same method of its predecessors, the story format of Mashiro-iro is quite simple. Our hero wanders off in a peaceful town and meets an atypical girl (our heroine) in an unusual way. Surprisingly, the girl whom our hero has met is in the same school as his and eventually they became classmates. The boy then tries to befriend the girl and her friends but she shrugs him off saying she doesn’t want to because she has more serious matters to attend to. Despite the prima donna attitude, the girl has some secrets and problems she doesn’t want anyone else to find out. Accidentally, the boy found out about this and offered his help. The girl at first rejected the boy, but since he was so persistent she had no choice but to accept it. Despite the boy having without any romantic intentions, the girl developed a feeling of love, and I might as well say that the boy did too. Thus through a simple twist of fate, everything was changed for the couple. Now if the anime focused more on improving their relationship with the help of everyone around then this could easily be the spitting image of a modern day Clannad but true enough, it doesn’t stop there. You could treat the first half of the series as a different story since the second half of the series underwent drastic changes. After the main heroine was introduced and her problem solved, the story now focused on the side characters, or so they were.
For a sweet and happy first half, the second half was rather jarring. As the other characters were introduced, they quickly overshadowed the main girl whom the viewers have grown attached to. Not only that, the series took a much unexpected turn in which not only the main girl was thrown off the scene, but another girl took her place in being the leading lady. In the blink of an eye, what happened during the first half was all forgotten and was never given any further attention. Everything happened as if there was a sudden change of scripts which was much uncalled for. Viewers did not see it coming and there was no reasonable explanation on why the scriptwriters would do such a thing. The cause would probably be because it seemed so generic, the staff in their saving efforts might have placed an event as such for them to be labeled as unique but instead of impressing its audience, it made the audience scratch their heads in confusion, raise an eyebrow, or even curse the scriptwriters. Although not a School Days-tier shocker, a lot of people would be annoyed by the decision made by the creators. And thus would be the most fatal error they’ve made in the series.
For an anime that had me hoping for so much it’s just sad to see that what had great potential was wasted because of mishandling. Having said that, I’d recommend treating Mashiro-iro Symphony as one anime with two different themes: the first part portraying on how it feels like to have a crush, while the second part dealing on how it feels like to have a lover.
Nonetheless, the opening and ending songs are so gentle it could easily drive away whatever grievances you have against this anime. In the opening song “Authentic Symphony”, Choucho really shines with lyrics illustrating how romantic and lovely this series is supposed to be. While on the other hand, the ending song “Suisai Candy” by marble is so sweet just like what its title is. What’s more is that it is so catchy you’ll be surprised that you’re already singing along. If an anime’s criteria for rating is only music then Mashiro-iro will without a doubt get a perfect 10.
Concerning the sound department would also be the voice actors. With different character personalities, you could easily identify who’s the tsun, the tomboy, the caring senior or the “dumb maid”. Though sometimes it seems that they speak very slow, the voice actors still did a good job in providing personalities for the characters. Although sometimes, there are some parts which felt that it dragged on for too long (sedating at most) because of how the characters speak and act slow. Along with the packaging of a character are the designs and as I have stated above, there wasn’t much of a distinction among them but the different hairstyles and hair colors which can be accurately observed in the ending song sequence. Another issue concerning its art would be the distortion of the characters’ faces when zoomed out. The male protagonist Uryuu suffers the most from this.
When all’s been said and done and despite the drawbacks, by all means Mashiro-iro Symphony is not a bad anime. It has a proper storyline and characters you could easily like without focusing much on giving fan service. If you’re a fanatic of sweet and romantic love story then I don’t see why you shouldn’t give this one a shot just be wary of the second half. Sure it is no Clannad, Kanon or ef but it is one of the most decent adaptations I have seen this year. If not for the sudden changes then this would easily be a contender for 2011. After all, who doesn’t like a sugary sweet love story?

Yeah.. Pretty much the same
The plotline is kinda similiar in aspect to a sibling moving to one place or changing their "surroundings" to another school. They discover their common intrestest amongst friends and eventually find love
If you like one, you'll definitely like the other. It feels like they took characters with the same traits and put them in two different settings.

These series have quite a few simularities. First of, there is the young male who lives with his younger sister. He ends up helping out a female and the next day meets her at school, only to find out that she has another side to her personality. There is also a color theme.
Multiple girls like the main character. Similar art.
Graphics , story , the feeling , only difference is , in Akane , main characters sister is also in love interests . I don't know about Mashiroiro , It's not finished yet.
And both of them look like a harem game , where main character choses a path ( a girl ) and try to finish the game with that girl's ending . But of course in anime , main character doesn't understand the others feelings and ends up with not choosing any of them . Makes you mad .
