Hellsing Ultimate

There exist creatures of darkness and evil that plague the night, devouring any human unfortunate enough to be caught in their grasp. On the other side is Hellsing, an organization dedicated to destroying these supernatural forces that threaten the very existence of humanity. At its head is Integra Fairbrook Wingates Hellsing, who commands a powerful military and spends her life fighting the undead.

Integra's vast army, however, pales in comparison with her ultimate weapon: the vampire Alucard, who works against his own kind as an exterminator for Hellsing. With his new vampire servant, Seras Victoria, at his side, Alucard must battle not only monsters, but all those who stand to oppose Hellsing, be they in the guise of good or evil.

In a battle for mankind's survival, Hellsing Ultimate proves that appearances are not all they may seem, and sometimes the greatest weapon can come in the form of one's worst nightmare.

This anime being a successor of the original Hellsing, for its succession, it fits, starting from the ending of hellsing anime, to the ending of this anime, with new characters and feuds. Returns of old feuds and characters too also add to the new mix and also combining higher production quality, new character dynamics, and new means of sorcery to make the series of Hellsing not fall on its knees at the ending of the first premiered series.

Overall, this edition to the franchise of hellsing is one to be respected and it is even more gorey.

The major grain of salt to be taken ... is that it repeats a lot of the clips from Hellsings, its predeccessor anime. However that grain of salt can be swallowed down since it sets as a recall to prepare for the next clips, new events. Still gets the same rating as its predecessor due to it continuing the legacy and still getting the approval in this review that it is.

Mixed Feelings

I absolutely love this anime and plan to get it tattooed on my back soon. I rewatch it all the time. A lot of people say it's boring and objectively I can see why they think that. The episodes are long, it has some nazi war stuff that happens, and you're kind of left wanting to see Alucard go insane more often, but you don't get much of that. Regardless, I think the anime delivers in a lot. Aesthetically it's beautiful. It has that dark, gory, vampiric feel that you can only get from old anime. The plot is decent, but it feels like a ... subplot compared to what it could be, if that makes sense. Like I feel like this anime feels like "a day in the life of alucard" instead of an actual complete plot, but honestly I don't mind. I love the characters, I love the aesthetic, and it'll forever be in my top 5 favorite anime as someone that's been watching anime since she was a newborn.

In order to not start off extremely negative i will list off the things i did like about this show: the soundtrack is good and so is the action, the characters and their designs are cool (apart from seras), the overall premise is cool, the voice acting is good (again, apart from seras) specifically Alucard’s voice actor that guy really outdid himself. Now onto the actual review.

If you want to know about the story, to put it simply, there really is no story. The “story” only serves as a plot device for the gorefest and carnage to ensue. This show has nothing to say and ... you will have nothing to take away from it. It tries to at the end but it’s very superficial and you can clearly tell the author doesn’t know what he’s talking about. It’s pretty much a meathead narrative that was a chore to sit through at times.

The characters are dull, they are nothing beyond “cool”. Alucard is cool. A gun slinger with a red coat (even though we have better versions like Vash and Dante). Alucard is cool, thats it. There really is nothing else i can say about him. I feel completely indifferent about him. He is nothing more than an OP mary sue character who only exists to display his powers and win. The fact that he gets compared to Castlevanias Alucard is absurd because he is a 100 times better of a character than this Alucard could ever be.

There are no stakes in this show since the outcome is evident with how OP Alucard is. Every fight goes the same. Alucard gets fucked up (on purpose) due to him just standing there like an idiot and then we have our “oh my god” moment where he heals himself and goes berserk and kills everyone. It’s honestly just repetitive.

The side characters aren’t any better, with dull, nonsensical and nonexistent character motivations. And underdeveloped character dynamics. The main villain of the show is one of the worst villains i have seen in my life, having the most bland goal to just be another “evil for the sake of evil” villain. The only side characters i liked are Walter (even though they didnt do much with him up until the end and that in itself was an asspull) and the mercenary group leader as i found them to be the most compelling.

The tonal shifts this show goes through with its pathetic excuses for comedy should be a cardinal sin, absolutely ruining the atmosphere and overall tone of the show.

It’s really such a shame because they have all the groundwork for a really good show and they just waste that potential for it to be just another early 2000s edgy gorefest anime. The action is good, yes. But when i don’t particularly care about the overarching “plot” (or should i say the lack-thereof) i am just left in boredom with the fights. I dont really care who wins or loses. Once in a while i’ll let out a “damn” when a character does something unexpected but that’s about it. Ffs even the main villain doesn’t care if he wins or loses.

I don’t really know if i can recommend this anime. I don’t even see it as an anime. It’s more of like an AMV/edit template with cool scenes so you can edit it with music and stuff. If you’re willing to turn your brain off and go unga bunga mode then i guess you can go ahead and watch it. Don’t go in here expecting anything of value. Honestly, Hellsing would’ve been better off as a video game instead.

So to sum up Hellsing Ultimate:

“nah we got hype moments and aura”
