Yet, mankind remains a slave to its habits; from happiness and sorrow, to wrath and love, a myriad of emotions continue to play an integral part of human life. Simultaneously, time and time again, certain beliefs and agendas persist over the centuries to disturb the fragile equilibrium of the world's preordained nature and principles. It appears that fate, with its dynamic variables, can manifest itself in many ways—and oftentimes exhibits a bizarre sense of humor. Through this she learns a lot about human nature, and gains a keen understanding of peoples through their voices. An aging gangster notices her talents and decides to hire her to solve various cases. While Nico is on her first case, she meets with a geeky man named Iichiro Sudo, who has an obsession with robot toy models. This obsession that leads Nico to call him "Robo," and the two become an unlikely team. After completing her first case Nico proclaims herself "Sexy Voice" and a variety of short loosely linked character-driven adventures ensue.

The story takes place in 1982, Hitoshi Himoto, the typical Japanese workaholic is sent to South America to manage a subsidiary of his company. He will have to struggle against competitors and prejudices while negotiating with dictators and revolutionaries in order to lead his company to the summit.

The series follows the life of Kai Houjou, the son of a young human woman and the king of demons. Kai's teenage mother was raped and Kai was stolen from her at birth to be raised as a tortured prisoner in the demon world. He has now escaped and returned to the human world to find and protect his mother. However, time moves differently in the two worlds and although Kai is grown, it has only been a year since his mother gave birth. Kai enters his mother's high school in order to stay near her. Meanwhile, demons hunt for Kai, and he must fight or make deals to save himself and his mother, while trying to discover why the demons consider him such a threat. The story is dark, with references to and scenes of rape, torture, incest, and murder. Kai is a teenage boy who has known little in the world besides torture and rape, mostly at the hands of his older half-brother, a demon prince. Kai's mother is a traumatized victim, who has found the strength to go back to school after her ordeal, even though she is now the subject of rumor and ridicule. Many of the demons have tortured/incestuous pasts (or presents) themselves. While the art is not very sexually explicit, and less violently explicit than one might expect, the story implies all manner of horror, perversion, and eroticism.

There's a new transfer student in school named Midori, and she is very cold and set apart from everyone. For some reason, though, everyone seems interested in her. One day, Ao witnesses proof that she is a supernatural being, and confirms with her that she is actually a god. He carelessly asks a wish of her, like people have been sending to the popular "God mail" address that's suddenly been going around school, and she grants his wish. Unfortunately, the cost is high. She kills him-- only to bring him back as a shinigami (death god). Now, Midori informs him that his job is to show up where people are going to kill themselves and die in their place. Ao feels the pain of each death, though, so it's not something he wants to repeat over and over. For that matter, ending a person's single suicide attempt doesn't necessarily mean that he has done anything about the reasons they were willing to take that step.
