2) I quite enjoyed it! If there were more episodes I'd definitely see it getting anywhere from 7-9. Also, on that note, the live action version of TSKR is actually REALLY good, IMO

Thanks for your work of investigation around the 1981 Special of Hashire Melos. This format isn't always distributed in home video, but if I ever come by a Japanese raw, I will certainly provide English subs.

every entry i added to PTW, i made sure to count the number of episodes and put the total number on the tags
then you can export to excel, with excel wizardry you can get the total number

@ Gaussian: In the early days I did more grooming and pruning, but with now almost 1500 entries everything is slow and cumbersome. MAL hasn't good tool support. I find myself handing out many ratings 7-3, and "too few" very good and very bad ones. So from time to time I promote and demote a few. Basically anything in 8/9/10 is of similar quality, and the higher two basically mean they touch something personal for me. The problem with media types is common, OVA and 100 episode shows just don't work well together on the same scale. Many people (including me) factor that in by rating OVA 1-2 points lower, i.e. factor in run time. But there's no hard rule I use. I understand that for AMV this must be even worse.

Important point: anime.plus offers you to see your average and distribution based on watch time OR title count. In the former, my average goes up to 7-ish territory. Other sites such as anime-planet or anilist.co also offer other views, not only the title count MAL version.

Overall, I'm a lot more relaxed these days because sheer mass seems to regulate itself pretty well. I check every few weeks and if all looks half-way OK, that's fine. I don't really watch bad shows to balance the distribution, but fortunately I'm a sucker for 80s and 90s OVA. Those are a reliable source of < 5 ratings with only reasonable time investment.

Marimite seems to have a large Latin following as I run into a lot of Spanish/Portuguese(?) AMV's for it on Youtube. Maybe because they tapped Spanish voice-actors for a Spanish dub (if you expand the Characters & Staff menu you'll see that), or the larger Christian demographic among those countries, maybe. Someone did an AMV of Touko's facial expressions with Spanish captions which I actually took the time to translate for myself (fortunately for me it was just single words or short phrases). I'll spare you the link (for once :) plus it's a tad spoilery in places anyway.

Looks like your post filled a lot of holes for you (including my info dump on Marimite lol). Speaking of which I finally got around to correcting a couple of typos on those quotes. When I made them I lifted them direct from the fansubs but it's on me for not noticing them earlier and then putting it off. Linking them in a post finally goaded me to action though. The typos were "all right>alright" and "you're>your".

You are right in taking the context into account when rating a show and that is how most of the time I proceed too. Besides the seasonals I am watching Princess Tutu right now and it has similar genres to Fruit Basket (comedy, drama, romance, fantasy, mystery) and it too uses shoujo-ish character archetypes (like Myuuto, the sad-eyed, lonely prince-sama, who is both in personality and appearance seems similar to Yuki in FB) and there are a few scenes with over the top comedy in this too, which could be called "childish" but in spite of that I like this anime; perhaps because it has the nostalgic mood and the endearing charm of the old-school tales (though, as I have heard, the tone will get darker after a few episodes).

Princess Tutu has been on my PTW list for a while like you had Shouwa Genroku and there are other series among your favourites (like Monster or GTO) that I have my eyes on for a long time and based on what I have heard about them those too put me under the same kind of pressure you have mentioned :)
